Eighth Note ublications salm 10 Kenneth Bray This is an intensely ersonal comosition hich began as a iece or choir (SATB) and organ using the oerul lament salm 10 as a basic text. The rather diicult choral setting hich as created as the direct result o a tremendous uheaval in my ersonal lie namely the loss o my artner o over ity years ater a lengthy illness. In a somehat harsh and dissonant oening section (m. 1-0) there is more than a little anger hich relaces the more sulicative mood o the salmist. Hoever you ill note a gradual increase in eelings o humility and accetance eace and hoe as the ork rogresses. In the recaitulation m. 78 to the end there is a change to a more lilting metre and the melodic intervals become soter and less angular. May I suggest that regardless o your siritual leanings a reading o the salm used as my libretto may hel you to realize my musical and dramatic urose. Out o the deths I cry to you O Lord. Lord hear my voice m. 1 May your ears be attentive to the voice o my sulications m. 6 I you O Lord should mark iniquities Lord ho could stand m. 0 But there is orgiveness ith you so that you may be revered. m. Let the ermata in m. 7 be a long one to allo or the tam-tam (gong) to be heard (and elt). M. 8-9 m. 16 6 and m. 10-110 are somehat more relaxed than the measures receding them but basically+k80=. lease don t hurry the trilet igures (hich are in abundance). A graduate o the niversity o Toronto (Mus Bac) and the Eastman School o Music niversity o Rochester (M M) Kenneth Bray began iano lessons at age 5 and later studied tuba in high school and bassoon at university level. Beore ar service in WWII ith the RCA he as an itinerant music suervisor in several Muskoka District (Ontario) schools. Ater university studies he taught high school later serving on aculties at the universities o Toronto and Western Ontario. He has been active in teaching erorming arranging and comosing music most o his lie. He has many choral and instrumental ublications to his credit and has co-authored the olloing series: or Young Musicians Solos or Schools and Relections o Canada.
