Yu can cmbine saved searches by entering them in the Find field - fr example, S1 and S2. When yu d, the limiters frm each search are applied t the new search. Legal Infrmatin Reference Center 20

If S1 is a search fr heart and (PT Case Studies r PT Practice Guideline) and S2 is a search fr liver and kidney and FT Y, a search that cmbines S1 and S2 searches: S1 and S2: ((heart) and (PT Case Studies r PT Practice Guideline)) and ((liver and kidney) and (FT Y)) S1 r S2: ((heart) and (PT Case Studies r PT Practice Guideline)) r ((liver and kidney (and FT Y)) In either case, the limiters frm bth searches are included. Using Limiters and Field Cdes t Search Yu can search using the limiters in the Advanced Search Screen withut entering a term in the Find field. This lets yu search very specific types f infrmatin like Review Articles, r certain Publicatin Types. The limiters that are available depend n yur selectin f database, and they wrk t limit each ther. By entering the apprpriate field cdes in the Find field, yu culd search, fr example, fr items by a specific authr published in a particular year ((AU Smith) and (YR 99)). The search appears in the Add t Search clumn, and is assigned a Search ID number. Using Parentheses In the examples abve, parentheses were used t shw hw searches are cnducted by default in the Advanced Search Screen. Parentheses let yu cntrl a search query, and yu can mdify yur searches by mdifying their placement. If yu d nt use parentheses, terms with AND and NOT have pririty ver terms with r. If yu use parentheses, elements that are enclsed in parentheses are executed first, and thse parentheses appear in Search Histry and in the Find field. In the example belw, the same search terms are used, but the use f parentheses mdifies the search, and prduces different results: lung r ((kidney and liver) and skin) = 5912 results (lung r kidney) and (liver and skin) = 9 results Results fr these searches differ accrding t the gruping f the terms. If yu d nt use parentheses fr the query, the rder f peratin fr the Blean peratrs is accrding t the Z39.50 standard. AND and NOT have pririty ver OR. Fr example, hckey r baseball and sprts injuries will execute as: Legal Infrmatin Reference Center 21

hckey r (baseball and sprts injuries) Using Limiters and Clusters n the Result List In rder t update yur result list using limiters as well as subject clusters, yu must first apply any desired limiters and then select a subject cluster. When a limiter is selected AFTER a subject cluster has been selected, the limiter will be applied t the riginal search nly. The subject cluster will be ignred. Example 1: After running yur initial search query, select the Full Text limiter under Limit yur results. Next, select a subject cluster frm the Narrw Results by clumn. Yur results have been updated t reflect bth the limiter as well as the subject cluster. Example 2: After running yur initial search query, click the Search Optins link under Limit yur results and select a limiter frm the resulting windw. Click Search. Select frm: Blean/Phrase Supprts any Blean searching r exact phrase searching. Stp wrds are ignred when part f phrases being searched. Find all f my search terms Aut AND all search terms entered (e.g. web AND accessibility) Find any f my search terms Aut OR all search terms entered (e.g. web OR accessibility) SmartText Searching - Yu can cpy and paste chunks f text (up t 5000 characters including spaces) t search fr results. SmartText Searching leverages a technlgy that summarizes text entered t the mst relevant search terms then cnducts search. This search mde is nt available fr all databases. When yu click the SmartText Searching radi buttn, the Find field grws t indicate that yu can enter as much text as yu want. Type in text, r cpy and paste text frm an article (r ther surce) int the Find field, select any f the limiters r expanders, and click Search.
