Instructional Video Series How to Upgrade the Hard Drive in a 24 imac (2007-Early 2009) Skill Level: Involved Time to Complete: Approximately 45 Minutes Required Tools: Small Phillips Screwdriver Torx T8 Screwdriver Torx T6 Screwdriver (2) Suction Cups Microfiber Cloth Before Proceeding: Make sure you have an up-to-date backup of your data. Perform upgrade using proper anti-static precautions Discharge static electricity before beginning Work on a static free surface Please visit www.macsales.com/drive-copy for more info. Part One: Removing the Original Drive 1. The first step is to shut down and unplug the imac.then, 2. remove the memory door located on the bottom of the screen using a small Phillips screwdriver. Next, attach a suction cup to each upper corner of the imac screen. 3. a. Grip both suction cups and gently pull the screen toward you until it detaches from the magnets that hold it in place. Then lift the screen away and set it aside. -1-

b. Carefully lay the imac on its back. 6. Next, remove the 4 middle sized screws, 2 on either side of the optical drive, and 2 in the bottom corners. 4. Begin removing the 12 Torx T8 screws that hold the front bezel in place. 7. Finally, remove the 2 longest screws located in the bottom middle. 5. Start with the 6 shortest screws located on the left side and top edges. 8. With the screws removed, lift the bezel from the top so that you can loosen the bottom edge and tilt it up. However, do not lift up too far on the bezel as there is a microphone cable that still must be disconnected. -2-

10. To remove the LCD, first disconnect the LVDS connector in the lower right by removing the 2 Torx T6 screws holding it in place, then pull up on the tab on the connector to disconnect it. 9. With the bezel loosened and moved out of the way, detach the microphone cable located at the top of the system. Simply pull the connector apart. You can then set the bezel aside. 11. Next, remove the 8 Torx T8 screws holding the LCD in place. There are 4 screws on either side of the screen. -3-

12. Lift the LCD up slightly and disconnect the display temperature 13. Lift the LCD further and peel back the Mylar tape covering the sensor cable from the logic board in the lower left by simply inverter connector, then unplug this cable. pulling up on the connector. NOTE: In some 2009 imac versions, this cable is located towards the center of the imac rather then the lower left corner. 14. Finally, lift the LCD away from the system and carefully set it aside. NOTE: The hard drive is located near the center of the imac. -4-

15. Now with access to the hard drive, remove the foam tape covering the temperature sensor cable. Then, remove the bracket that holds the cable in place as well as the sensor cable itself. 17. Finally detach the SATA and Power cables from the drive and you can remove the drive from the system. Simply pull on these cables to disconnect them. 16. To remove the hard drive from its bay, first pull the top of the drive towards you to unlatch it from the frame. Then pull the drive up and out of the bay slightly. 18. With the drive removed, you can now transfer the mounting hardware from the original drive to the new one. Use your Torx T8 screwdriver to start with the 2 mounting pins. -5-

19. a. Then, using your Torx T8 screwdriver remove and transfer the mounting bracket. b. Your new drive is now ready to install. -6-

Part Two: Installing the New Drive 20. First, connect the SATA and power cables to the new drive. 22. With the drive secure in the bay, place the thermal sensor cable on the new drive in a spot similar to the original and cover it with the bracket, followed by the foam tape. NOTE: There should be enough residual adhesive to allow the bracket and foam pad to stick. 21. Place the new drive into the bay by sliding the mounting pins on the drive into the grommets in the bay, then press the drive into place until it latches. -7-

23. You can now lay the top edge of the LCD back into place, but don t close it all the way yet. 25. Then, reconnect the LCD temperature sensor cable by sliding it back into its slot. 24. First, reconnect the inverter cable and re-cover it with the original Mylar tape. 26. After connecting both cables, you can carefully lay the LCD all the way into place. 27. Now replace the LVDS connector by pressing it into place and securing it with its 2 Torx T6 screws. -8-

28. Next, replace the 8 Torx T8 screws that hold the LCD in place. There are 4 Screws on both the left and right sides of the LCD. 29. With the LCD secured, carefully arrange the bezel so that you can reconnect the microphone cable, do so by lining up the connectors and sliding them together. 31. Next, replace the screws that hold the bezel in place. Using a Torx T8 screwdriver start with the 2 longest screws in the bottom middle. 30. Now set the bezel back into place, starting at the bottom and making sure the microphone cable lays in its channel. 32. Now replace the 4 medium Torx T8 screws, 2 in the bottom corners and 2 on either side of the optical drive. -9-

33. The shortest Torx T8 screws go in the remaining holes. NOTE: If the isight camera is not centered in its cutout, carefully use a screwdriver to position it through these 2 holes. 35. Now lean the front glass into place, you may have to squeeze along the top edge to make sure the glass sits flush. 34. With the bezel secure, stand the imac back up. Then place the lower edge of the front glass on to the lower edge of the bezel. Use a microfiber cloth to make sure there is no dust on the LCD or the backside of the glass. 36. With the glass in place, remove the suction cups and wipe down any marks using your microfiber cloth. -10-

37. Finally, using a Phillips screwdriver, replace the battery door making sure that it sits flush. The installation is now complete! *Now you can begin formatting the new drive, along with transferring your data and OS over. Please visit www.macsales.com/data-transfer for more details.
