02 Keysight 5G RF DVT Toolset - Solution Brief The Fastest Path to 5G 5G brings a vast variety of services classified under three use case categories: 1) enhanced mobile broadband (embb) 2) massive machine-type communications (mmtc) and 3) ultra-reliable, low-latency communications (UR-LLC). Each use-case class supports various different services with similar performance requirements. In wireless communication systems, the radio is a critical component to determine what type of services or applications a network is able to support. 5G is the first radio system designed to deal with any spectrum between 400 MHz and 90 GHz. This wide range of spectral options provides the best combination of high capacity, high data rates, ubiquitous coverage and ultra-reliability to cover the use cases mentioned above. The main spectrum options for 5G in its early phases are around 3.5 GHz and 4.5 GHz (sub- 6GHz) and mmwaves at 24-28 GHz and 39 GHz with TDD technology. Broadly speaking, sub-6ghz is critical to coverage and to deliver wide-area services while higher frequencies are of great interest because of the vast amount of spectrum available for achieving very high data rates. However, playing in these mmwave bands creates a unique set of challenges to RF engineers dealing with real-world propagation situations. Beamforming is one of the key technologies that has been fingered as a part of the solution to the 5G deployment problem. The use of beams change the way radio resources are managed. 5G beamforming mechanisms (i.e. tracking, refinement, switch) and related RF and RRM (Radio Resource Management) tests are being specified, as part of pre-standards and 3GPP New Radio (NR), to make sure best performance is achieved.
