Vehicle Intercom System The J&I Vehicle Intercommunication System (VIS) enables the crew of a Platform access any one of up to six (6) installed radios for transmit, receive and PTT functions and monitor a second radio in receive only mode. Simultaneously the VIS provides facilities that enable the crew to communicate with each other. The system is a full duplex audio for intercom and simplex access to installed radios with transmission via PTT. The intercom can be either transmission via a PTT or through the operation of a switch provide live mic (full duplex) for hands free operation. Each crew position configured to access radios can select different radios and transmit simultaneously whilst maintaining access to the intercom audio. A range of headsets can be used with the system when connected to the J&I Pressel Assembly. The design of the audio accessories enables the audio streams to be routed as working radio to right earpiece, monitor radio to the left earpiece and Intercom to both earpieces. A Pressel assembly with a DSP Active Noise Reduction module can be inserted to obtain coherent communication in noisy environments. All units forming part of the VIS are interconnected via a common BUS system. This enables the system to be reconfigured in users and functions with the minimum of changes, only BUS cable requiring change. All installed VIS units in the system can be connected in either Ring or Daisy Chain configurations with extensions for eternal remote operation capability. The VIS has been designed to enable the User's maintenance organisation to replace internal subassemblies as required. All sub assemblies are interconnected via plugs and sockets eliminating the requirement for soldering activities. This method of maintenance reduces the cost of ownership of the system by eliminating time consuming return to manufacture for repair and down time for failed units so enhancing availability of the systems. System Interface Unit The SIU, provides the central point for the interconnection of the installed units and radios, at the same time provides a stabilised and clean system power from the external power source. The internal Power supply module operates over the voltage range of 10 and 36 volts DC. The SIU has the following connectors located on the rear face of the unit: Two BUS connectors, allowing the BUS to be connected to installed units in both main configurations Three Radio Connectors with dual capacity allowing up to six radios to be interfaced to the system. A single Power connector for the connection to the host platform supply (24 or 12 volts DC) The SIU has a single ON/OFF control mounted to the front face. The ON/OFF switch is illuminated Red when depressed SIU Functionality The SIU provides the following: An audio and PTT interface for up to six radio transceivers Conditioned and stabilised system power System interconnectivity through the two BUS connections either in Ring or Daisy Chain format for both power and audio
Radio Access Unit The RAU is the main user interface which provides all the functions necessary to achieve the operation requirement. The Unit provides the User with selectable access to any two installed and connected radio transceivers (working and monitor) and the system intercom. The selected Working Radio provides the user with access to its transmit, receive and PTT functions, the monitoring of the 2 nd Radio only provides the user with the received audio. At the same time the user has access to the full duplex Intercom. The audio output of the RAU is configured to provide two independent receive channels, left and right. This configuration enables the three audio functions, Working, Monitor and Intercom audio to be routed to the headset as; Monitor Radio Left Earpiece Working Radio Right Earpiece Intercom Both Earpieces This configuration is wholly dependent on the design of the headset and any non J&I Pressel assembly Additionally the headset connector provides a supply voltage for the operation of legacy ANR functionality. The RAU is provided with the following; Two BUS connectors one at each end of the unit, allowing interconnection to system units A single headset connector located on the under side of the unit. A programming port for radio access options. Also acts as a remote Intercom PTT function. The following controls and indicators are provided on the top face of the box; Three volume controls one for the Working radio, one for the Monitor radio and one for the Intercom. Two rotary switches enabling the user to select one of the installed radios as the working radio and one as the monitor radio. A switch for the Live Microphone function which when depressed enables full duplex hands free operation of the intercom only. When operated the switch illuminates a green LED. A single Red LED indicates the presence of power on the unit.
RAU Functionality User access to both Intercom and Installed Radios Selection capability for two radios (working and monitor) Volume controls for both radios Volume control for Intercom Live Microphone switch to enable User to select either full-duplex PTT operated or hands free modes for Intercom Headset connectivity suitable for most headsets in use Audio for the intercom is routed to both earpieces Audio from the Working radio is routed to the right earpiece Audio from the Monitor radio is routed to the left earpiece RAU has a BUS interconnection capability to enable Daisy Chaining or Ring interconnection Programming port to define radio access/inhibit function
Intercom User Unit The IUU is a basic unit providing a single user with intercom transmit and receive only, see figure 4, and is installed where Crew intercommunication only is required. The IUU provides a volume control for the intercom, a Live Microphone switch and a headset/handset connector. Additionally the headset connector provides a supply voltage for the operation of legacy ANR functionality. The IUU is provided with the following; Two BUS connectors one at each end of the unit allowing the bus to be connected to additional units. A single headset connector located on the under side of the unit. Optional remote Intercom PTT connector The following controls and indicators are provided on the top face of the box; A single volume control for the Intercom. A switch for the Live Microphone function which when depressed enables full duplex hands free operation of the intercom only. When operated the switch illuminates a green LED. A single Red LED indicates the presence of power on the unit. IUU Functionality User connection module provides access to internal Intercom system Volume control for intercom audio Live Microphone switch to enable User to select either full-duplex PTT operated or hands free modes for Intercom Headset/Handset connectivity suitable for most handsets in use IUU has a BUS interconnection capability to enable Daisy Chaining or ring interconnection
Crew Briefing Unit The CBU is used primarily for APCs where the embarked personnel require access to the platform intercom system. A single unit enables two users to listen to intercom audio simultaneously, the number of units installed can be varied according to requirement and space. The CBU is provided with the following: Two (2) BUS connectors Two (2) headset connectors Controls and indicators The following controls and indicators are located on the top face of the unit Two (2) volume controls one for each User A Red LED indicating presence of power CBU Functionality Intercom audio (listen only) to two Users
Loudspeaker Unit The Loudspeaker Unit provides the user with the ability to select of any one of the installed radio s receiving audio for broadcast. To prevent feed back, when operated in enclosed spaces, the Loudspeaker has a mute function which when operated disconnects the user's transmit audio from being routed to the speaker. The loudspeaker can provide an output power of up to 40 watts. The Loudspeaker is provided with the following; Two BUS connectors, this allows the unit to be connected to the system BUS. Optional External power connector when operated remotely from the platform. The following controls are provided on the left side of the box; A single rotary switch enabling the user to select the required radio. A volume control allowing the user to set the required audio level. A mute function which mutes the Transmit audio when in enclosed spaces, this will eliminate the risk of feed back on the system.
