Engineering Standards Sectional Committee, LM 01 NATIONAL FOREWORD This Indian Standard (Part ) (Second Revision) which is identical with IS0 7 : 199 IS0 general purpose metric screw threads - Basic dimensions issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Engineering!&mdards Sectional Committee and approval of the Light Mechanical Engineering Division Council. This standard was originally issued in 1967 and subsequently revised in 1976. The first revision was based on ISO/R 7. This revision has been harmonized with IS0 Standard by adopting IS0 7 : 199. The text of IS0 Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. In the adopted standard certain conventions are not identical to those used in Indian Standards; attention is especially drawn to the following: a) Wherever the words International Standard appear referring to this standard, they should be read as Indian Standard. b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a full point (.) as the decimal marker. In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standards also exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their place are listed below along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated: In terna tional Standard Corresponding Indian Standard Degree of Equivalence IS0 68 IS0 61 IS 18 (Part 1) : IS0 general purpose metric screw threads : Part 1 Basic profile (second revision) (under preparation) IS 18 (Part ) : IS0 general purpose metric screw threads : Part General plan (second revision) (under preparation) Identical d0 IS0 508 IS 10587 : 198 Terminology for screw Technically threads equivalent The committee responsible for the formulation of this standard has decided to revise all the six parts of IS 18 by harmonizing with the corresponding IS0 Standards. Committee has also decided to publish the standards in two separate series. The first series will be published in four parts, that is, IS 18 (Parts 1 to ) by adopting the latest version of IS0 68-1, IS0 61, IS0 7 and IS0 6 respectively on publication covering the various requirements of IS0 general purpose metric screw threads except tolerances.the tolerances will be covered under new series of standards being published by adopting the latest version of IS0 965 (Parts 1 to 5) on publication. This standard (Part ) covers the basic dimensions of IS0 general purpose metric screw threads. The other three parts of the series on IS 18 are listed as under: IS No. Title IS 18 (Part l)/ IS0 general purpose metric screw threads: Part 1 Basic profile IS0 68-l (second revision) (under preparation) To be published in two parts (Revision of IS0 68 : 197), and Part 1 is applicable. *) To be published (Revision of IS0 61 : 197).
