Creating Pedigrees To begin adding individuals to the pedigree, right-click on the canvas and choose Add Individual or click the Male or Female button on the palette (bottom right of palette) and then click on the canvas. Either option will add an individual to the canvas. From this point forward, to add individuals to the pedigree, right-click on the individual and choose Add Relation. Or, instead of right clicking, use the Palette to add individuals. Choose the relation you want to add by clicking on the Palette and then clicking on the individual in the pedigree to add that relation. Each time you click on the Canvas, an individual will be added until you turn the palette off by clicking on the Off icon in the upper left corner. To undo an individual, simply click on the Undo button in the upper left corner of the palette. Clicking Undo multiple times will undo all of the previous actions in succession. One-Click Add You can add individuals to the pedigree very quickly using the One-click Add option. Simply select an individual in the pedigree, and you will see arrows appear on all sides of the individual. To add a Male, use the left mouse button and click on the yellow arrow. To add a female, right click on the arrows. Each time you click on the yellow arrow, it will add that relation to the individual. Progeny Anywhere - Online Pedigree Drawing Tool 3

Unattached Individuals You can add unattached individuals to the canvas by right clicking on the canvas and choosing Add Individual or by clicking on the unattached individual on the Palette and adding them to the canvas. You can store data for an unattached individual and then attach them to the pedigree whenever you want. Attaching Individuals You can attach unattached individuals to other individuals in the pedigree. To attach an unattached individual, highlight the individual by clicking on the icon. The black dots surrounding the icon are called Handles. By clicking on the black dot, you can drag a line from the dot to another individual. This will attach the individual and automatically add the line. Depending on the relationship you want to add, choose the appropriate Handle. Left Side or Right Side Handle assign as a spouse only. Top Middle Handle assign as a child only. Top Right Corner or Top Left Corner Handle assign as a sibling only or twin. (Holding the control key on your keyboard while adding a sibling will connect the two Individuals as twins) Bottom Handle assign as a parent only. After clicking on the handle, hold the mouse button down and drag it to the individual you want to add them to and release. A line should appear connecting the two individuals. In the example above, person #1 will be added as a spouse to person #2. You can also delete a relationship and then re-attach the relationship somewhere else on the pedigree. Note: If you try and attach an individual and it doesn't work, try removing the spousal relationship first, and then attempt to attach again. After attaching, re-attach the spousal relationship. Deleting Relationships To delete a relationship or un-attach a person, highlight the line connecting the individuals by clicking on the line with your left mouse button. After selecting the line, you should see two black dots at the end of each line indicating that the line has been selected. Press the delete key on your keyboard. The line will disappear, breaking the relationship between the two individuals. Progeny Anywhere - Online Pedigree Drawing Tool 4

Moving Individuals In The Pedigree To move an individual, click on the icon with your left mouse button and drag it to the desired position and release the mouse button. To move multiple individuals at once, lasso the icons by clicking on the white canvas and drag a box around the desired icons. This will highlight the individuals, allowing you to click on one of the highlighted individuals and move all of them as a group. Selecting Individuals and Relations You can select all Individuals in the pedigree by right-clicking on the canvas and choosing the Select All option on the popup menu. All the Individuals in the pedigree will be highlighted in yellow. To remove the highlights and return to normal, just click on the canvas once. The Reverse Select option allows unselected / unhighlighted Individuals in a pedigree to be selected instead. You can also select or search for specified relatives of an Individual by right clicking on an Individual icon and choosing the Select option. This way you can search and highlight all relatives, ancestors, descendants, parents, siblings, children, spouses and aunts and uncles. Progeny Anywhere - Online Pedigree Drawing Tool 5

Adding Legend Items and Assigning Symbols You can edit the existing Legend Items or add new ones by selecting the Symbols button on the toolbar. If there is existing Legend Items in the current pedigree, they will appear in the table. To add a new Legend Item: 1. Click on the Add Row button in the button panel that is at the center of the dialog box. 2. The text Legend Text Here will be assigned to the legend text column and must be changed to reflect the hereditary or other condition that you wish to track. The Icon for this Legend Item, shown in the 2 nd column of the table, will be blank with no symbols assigned. To customize or assign symbols to the Legend Item, just highlight the row with the Legend Item and follow the steps outlined in the section on assigning symbols and colors below. To remove a legend item from the system, just select the item in the table and then click the Delete Row button on the button panel. To save any changes that have been made to the legend inside this dialog, remember to hit the Apply button otherwise click the Reset button to disregard all the changes and not save to the legend table in the pedigree. Once saved, the added and modified legend items will appear on the Legend when the pedigree is re-drawn. Changing Legend Symbols and Colors To change the quadrant colors and assign other symbols to any legend item: 1. First select and highlight the legend item. The selected row will be highlighted as shown below and the surrogate icon in the panel labeled Icon Preview will be the same as the current icon of the selected legend item. 2. To change the color of any quadrant, just click inside that quadrant in the Icon Preview panel to see it highlighted with a red outline. Depending where you click, you can highlight the entire quadrant, a box within the quadrant, a circle in the middle and so forth. 3. When you desired area is highlighted, you can then choose a color from the color palette. To assign the other symbols such as quadrant box and center circle, just click on the appropriate symbol on the Symbol Palette panel. 4. When finished, add another row or click the Apply button. Assigning Symbols to Individuals To assign a symbol to an existing Individual inside the pedigree, just select and drag the legend item from the Legend Dialog box and drop it on an Individual icon as shown in the picture below. Another way of assigning symbols to individuals can be accomplished through the Properties panel. Using this method, all you need to do is follow the steps outlined below: 1. Right click on the icon of the individual and select Properties, or click the Properties button on the toolbar. 2. Select the Individual tab from the Properties panel. Copying and Pasting Pedigrees Pedigrees can be copied and pasted within the Progeny Online Tool or into other Windows applications such as Microsoft Wordor PowerPoint for publications. There are two ways of copying pedigree contents: 1. One way is to use the Copy Pedigree option shown by right-clicking on the canvas. This copies the whole pedigree contents to the clipboard and creates a Windows Metafile that can be pasted into any other Windows application. 2. The second method is to copy Individuals within the pedigree from one Progeny Anywhere application to another (or from one Online Pedigree to another). Using this method, you need to lasso the individuals in the pedigree that you intend to copy. The selected individuals will be highlighted in yellow. To copy the currently highlighted individuals to the Windows clipboard, do one of the following; right-click anywhere on the canvas and choose Copy Individuals option, or press the Ctrl-C keys on your keyboard. When the selected Individuals have been successfully copied to the clipboard, the Icons will be highlighted in green. To paste the Individuals into the same or another running Progeny Anywhere application, open the application you want to place the pedigree in and choose Paste Individuals. The Individuals in the clipboard will be pasted into the new application. If the application had other Individuals prior to the pasting operation, the new Individuals will form a separate sub tree(s). Note: Using this second option, only the highlighted Individuals and their full properties are copied and pasted. The legend and any other objects on the source pedigree are not transferred as part of the copy-paste operation. Progeny Anywhere - Online Pedigree Drawing Tool 8
