Ref No: 99-003 Date: January 20, 1999 ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT NO. 4 To: Manufacturers of Cord-Connected Equipment Subject: Publication of Technical Information Letter No. K-18 Interim Certification Requirements for Plug and Connector Configurations for Use with Cord-Connected Double-Insulated Equipment This CSA INFORMs announces the publication of Technical Information Letter (T.I.L.) No. K-18 dated January 20, 1999. Background and Rationale This Technical Information Letter (T.I.L.) is intended to clarify acceptable plug and connector configurations and the permissible number of conductors in the cord for cord-connected equipment bearing the double-insulation symbol,, for use on branch circuits rated 240 V or less in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1. Manufacturers have requested that CSA clarify the plug configurations that are acceptable for double-insulated equipment. Double-insulated equipment means equipment in which double insulation, or reinforced insulation, or both are used throughout and without provision for grounding. Consequently, the plugs used on cord sets and power supply cords for double-insulated equipment do not have a grounding pin. Similarly the connector will need to be of the ungrounded type. Direction This T.I.L. applies immediately to all cord-connected double-insulated equipment rated 240 V or less. These requirements are to be used in conjunction with CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0-M91, General Requirements Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. Effective Date: Immediately This Direction is applicable to products currently Certified under the following CSA product classifications: 3881 01 - TOOLS - Portable 3881 03 - TOOLS - Bench 3211 03 - INDUSTRIAL CONTROL EQUIPMENT - Motor Controllers - Auxiliary Devices 3211 07 - INDUSTRIAL CONTROL EQUIPMENT - Miscellaneous Apparatus Page 1 of 3 I:\WGM4\DOC_CTRL\INFORMs\1\mc
