Strengthening Towers for the 4G World Wireless tower structure, architecture and equipment configuration have changed significantly in the last twenty years. Towers have evolved to reduce the required real estate, improve aesthetics and minimize installation costs. The notin-my-backyard sentiment of most communities has forced tower owners to work with manufacturers to develop towers with the smallest footprint and as pleasing to the eye as possible. Throughout this evolution, concerns have mounted over weight and wind load. As the demand for wireless services continues to soar, providers are deploying more and more base-station antennas, fiber connections and other equipment in order to meet consumer demand. The resulting scenario is towers, support structures and mounts being pushed to the absolute limits of their capacity. This makes it especially important for wireless service providers and tower owners to understand the impact each antenna, connection, mount and piece of equipment has on the overall tower weight and the additional dynamic loading caused by wind. Depending on the aerodynamic efficiency of the overall tower, the increased wind load in a 4G world can be significant.

Foundation Reinforcements Decades-old tower originally constructed to support 1G equipment With the emergence of 4G technology, tower owners have had to make changes to respond to these new opportunities and challenges. It is estimated that 90,000 additional micro cell sites built end of this decade but the fact remains that many of the towers now in service were built at a time when RAD centers were much smaller and lighter. Making 4G work in a 2G world Accordant technicians installed a new foundation and completed other structural modifications making the tower 4G ready Installing 4G equipment on towers built for 1G and 2G technology represents significant challenges. Placing the RRU on top of the tower means there needs to be upgrades to the infrastructure built when most of the gear was at the base. Carriers are understanding this challenge and have demonstrated a willingness to work with the tower companies and supply the capital needed to upgrade these sites. Accordant s experience makes it a trusted source of tower modifications, reinforcements and enhancements. We are currently contracted to the top three tower owners in the U.S. capital needed to upgrade these sites
Safety.. Tower Safety Safety must always be paramount to tower owners. As networks become larger and more complex, overloaded towers or configurations that present excessive wind resistance can cause equipment to loosen or mounts to fail, which can represent potential danger to nearby residents. The safety of maintenance crews must also be taken into consideration, since overloaded towers or those with little concern for weight and wind load can present a serious danger to even the most experienced tower climbers. Safety for our Employees As a telecommunications contractor, Accordant s people are our most important assets. It is our policy to perform all work in the safest manner possible consistent with good construction practices. To reach the goals of this policy, Accordant has developed and instituted an effective Safety Program that is carried out at each location where work is performed. Every member of the Accordant Team has been trained in and has the responsibility to support and enforce our Safety Program. Meeting our company objectives requires that each employee continually focus his or her efforts on safety, and perform in a safe manner. Therefore, support for, and adherence to, Accordant Communications Safety Program is a condition of employment with our company.
Extending Wireless.. Wi-Fi With cellular carriers struggling to support the phenomenal growth in mobile data traffic, most are using Wi-Fi offloading as a more efficient use of radio spectrum especially in heavy traffic areas such as parks, stadiums, campuses and city centers. Planning a Wi-Fi network that delivers performance in today s BYOD environments, is scalable and reliable requires all the right software tools but also requires a level of knowledge that can only be gained through real-world experience. The Accordant team has an unparalleled level of Wi-Fi deployment expertise gained through 30+ deployments (more than 10,000 microcell access points) ranging from campus environments to complete cities. The team has developed and documented processes for dealing with the challenges of Wi-Fi deployments and has a well-defined plan for scaling resources to deploy these networks domestically and internationally. DAS With the increased dependence on wireless devices, in-building RF coverage has become an important concern for both commercial building who increasingly demand reliable communications inside office and residential buildings. Also, many municipalities have issued ordinances to ensure that construction of new buildings include adequate wireless coverage for public safety signals. The most common solution is a distributed Antenna System or DAS. Deploying 4G DAS (or upgrading 3G DAS to 4G) requires special skillsets and experience if it is to perform to today s requirements. Accordant s DAS experience and extensive history of designing and installing complex in-building fiber optic networks, plus our unrelenting attention to detail make us the right choice to develop a DAS with minimal disruption to tenants and customers. Small Cell Deployment When it comes to Microcells, most cellular contractors are out of their element Installation and Integration offer their own challenges since microcell deployment is not a common service element of cellular deployment contractors. Deploying in the traffic space requires traffic management, MOT certification and in some instances, if traffic control devices are involved, technicians are required to have current IMSA certifications. Typical telecommunications installers are the most qualified but are unfamiliar with radio installation. Ordinary tower installers are completely out of their element and ineffective for cross-training. Skilled construction supervision and proper staging are paramount to an effective, on-time installation. Accordant Communications has the skills and real-world experience with microcell deployments to ensure your project is completed safely, on-time and on-budget. Accordant Communications provides the following microcell deployment services as part of a total solutions suite: Initial area survey Drive area and map all broadcasting sources in the potential deployment bands at the street level Identify and map all potential mounting assets, owners, egress and power sources Municipal, power and egress agreements Site Acquisition Mesh, capacity and backhaul design Architecture and Engineering services Project Management Network Engineering and Design Installation and Integration Services Network tuning and enhancement Final drive and tuning services Operation and Maintenance
Fiber-to-the-Tower Fiber-to-the-Tower Network Development Efficient and robust backhaul is required for mobile operators to meet the demand on their networks as more of their customers utilize 4G services. Fiber optics is the only real backhaul solution capable of delivering the high-bandwidth, low-latency requirements of the mobile data offerings. Accordant Communications multi-decade experience at designing, integrating, installing and maintaining fiber networks, plus our extensive cellular site development capabilities sets us apart from the average contractor.
