SMART Recorder The recorder is used to record actions that are done on the interactive screen. If a microphone is attached to the computer, narration can be recorded. After the recording has been created, the recording can be played on any computer using the SMART Video Player or Windows Media Player. It is also possible to share the recording with others. Start SMART Recorder Click or press the Show Hidden Icons button in the bottom right corner of the computer screen (see illustration below). Click the Notebook icon, the item with the red box in the illustration above. Select Recorder from the list of tools. The SMART Recorder window will appear (see illustration below left). Change Recorder Settings In the SMART Recorder window, click the Menu list arrow. In the list that appears, click Options. Record Pause Stop 1

The Options window will display (see illustration above right). Click or press the tabs to make changes to: Recording Quality Under this tab, it is possible to change the quality of the sound and video. Most of the time it is best to use the recommended quality settings. Video Format The video format tab is used to select between the Windows Media Video Files option of the SMART Recorder Video option. The default is Windows Media Video Files. Target Files To specify the location for saving the recording, select this tab. This area is also used when a warning should appear if the disk space gets below a certain level. Watermark Use this tab to add a watermark to the recording. An image or text watermark may be added. When all the changes have been made, click the OK button. Record Actions When using the recorder, it is possible to record the full screen, a specified window, or a rectangular portion of the screen. If a microphone is attached to the computer, narration can be recorded. Click or press the arrow next to the red record button. Select one of the options: Record Desktop This option will record the entire screen. This is the default setting. Record Area To select an area of the screen to record, select this option. Record Window Use this option to record a window that is displayed on the screen. Perform the on-screen actions that are to be recorded. To pause the recording, press or click the Pause button. To resume the recording, press the Record button. To stop the recording, click the Stop button. Once the recording is stopped, the Save As window will display. Input a name for the recording or accept the default name. Click or press Save. The Completing Capture window will display (see illustration below left). Once the recording capture has been completed, the Record Complete window will display (see illustration above right). Click or press the Play Recording checkbox to play the recording. Click or press OK to exit the dialog box. 2

Hide Recorder This option can be used to hide the SMART Recorder but still be able to access the menu options by using the SMART Recorder icon which will display in the system tray. Select Menu on the SMART Recorder window. Click or press Hide to System Tray. The SMART Recorder window will disappear. The SMART Recorder icon will appear in the System Tray. Open Recorder Click or press the Show Hidden Icons button on the System Tray (see illustration at right). Click or press the SMART Recorder icon in the menu that appears (see illustration at right). Click the Show or Record option. The SMART Recorder will display. Change File Location The Options dialog box will display. Click or press the Target Files tab (see illustration below). Press or click the Browse button next to the Default Save Directory box. Browse to and select the folder into which the recording is to be stored. Press or click OK. 3

Display Message When Disk Space is Low Click or press the Target Files tab. Click or press the Warn me if free disk space is below check box. Type a disk space limit. This will warn SMART Recorder that the available disk space is low. In the Pause recording when free disk space falls below box, input a disk space below which SMART Recorder will pause recording. Click or press OK to exit the Options window and save the changes. Restore Default File Location Click or press the Target Files tab. Click or press the Restore Defaults button. Click or press OK. Add a Watermark to Recordings Press or click the Watermark tab (see illustration below). Add an Image Watermark Click or press the Image option button. Press or click the Browse button. 4

Browse to the folder where the image is stored. Click or press on the image and then click or press Open. Click or press the Properties button. The Watermark Properties dialog box will appear (see illustration below). A preview of the selected image will appear in the Preview pane. To change the position of the Watermark, drag the preview image to another area in the Preview pane. To change the size of the Watermark, drag the white circle in the right-bottom corner of the image. Click or press the Transparency icons to select the desired setting. Click or press OK to save the changes and return to the Options dialog box. To turn off the Watermark when SMART Recorder is closed, click or press the checkbox for Turn off watermark when SMART Recorder closes (see illustration above). Click or press OK to close the Options dialog box. To remove an Image Watermark: Open the Options window. Click or press the Watermark tab. Click or press the No Watermark option button. Press or click OK to exit the Options window and save the changes. Add a Text Watermark Press or click the Watermark tab (see illustration next page left). Click or press the Text option button. 5

Input text for the Watermark in the textbox. Press or click the Properties button. The Watermark Properties dialog box will appear (see illustration above right). Select Add Current Date, Add Current Time, or Add Frame Number to add additional information to the Watermark. Select the settings for Color, Font, and Transparency. Drag the Preview Image to another area in the Preview pane to change the position of the Watermark. To change the size of the Watermark, drag the white circle in the bottom right corner of the image. Click or press the OK button to close the Watermark Properties dialog box and save the changes. Click or press OK to close the Options dialog box. To remove a Text Watermark: Open the Options window. Click or press the Watermark tab. Click or press the No Watermark option button. Press or click OK to exit the Options window and save the changes. Share a Recording To share a recording with viewers who have a SMART Notebook, create the recording as a SMART Recorder video file. This type of recording will play with the SMART Video Player. Use 6

a Windows Media video player to share a recording with viewers who don t have SMART Notebook software. Convert SMART Recorder Video File In the SMART Recorder window, select Menu. Click or press Share Recording. The Share Recording dialog box will display (see illustration below). Select one of the options: WMV File Use this option to create a Windows Media video file. Self-Extracting File This option is used to create a video that will play on a computer that doesn t have a SMART Recorder installed. Click or press Next. Click or press the Browse button. Browse to and select the video file that is to be converted. Press or click the Open button. Click or press Next to move to the next step in the process. Click or press the Browse button to change the location where the video is to be stored. Input a name for the file. Press or click the Save button. Press Next to move to the last step in the process. Click the Finish button. 7
