TECHNICAL APENDIX A ETHERNET INTERFACE CONNECTOR PINOUT Multiple NM-541 can be connected to a local network by using a commercial Ethernet switch. UTP cables in that case should be ended at both sides with RJ45 male connectors with a pinout as indicated in table 1 (straight/patch cable connection). Computer should also have a standard network card installed. Front view of the RJ45 MALE pin. TECHNICAL APENDIX B DEVICE DISCOVERY UTILITY 1. INSTALLING THE DEVICE DISCOVERY UTILITY The following procedure shows how to install Device discovery utility which is useful for tracking and managing NM-541 devices connected to a local network. When installing discovery utility NM-541 does not have to be connected or powered on. STEP 1: Open windows explorer and find Device Discovery Utility in supplied CD-ROM. Double click on DUSetup.exe to begin installation STEP 2: Windows could then give a warning that user is about to run the selected file. Click Run to continue STEP 3: Click Next to continue
STEP 4: Select destination folder for the Utility to be set up (default folder recommended) and click Next STEP 5: Copying of the needed files is ready to begin. Click Next to continue STEP 6: After completion of installation a success notice is supplied. Click Finish to exit.
2. DEVICE DISCOVERY UTILITY CONFIGURATION Before running Device Discovery Utility for the NM-541 installer must first check that: NM-541 is powered up correctly Ethernet cables are connected Device Discovery Utility has been set up properly After running utility (located under Start>All Programs>Digi>Digi Device Discovery) a not properly configured message could appear. This means that IP address has not properly been assigned and needs reconfigure.
Configuration of the network settings can be done within the Device Discovery Utility either by letting the network switch assign IP address for every NM-541, or manual. Right click on highlighted IP address of every device to get the drop down menu and select Configure network settings as shown in figure above 2.1 Automatic IP configuration (DHCP) Obtaining Network settings automatically via DHCP function of Ethernet switch can be done by checking Obtain network settings automatically radio button and then Save. NM-541 will then restart and after a minute it will appear again with no warnings in the window. In the bottom left corner the new IP details appear indicating that it is automatically configured (DHCP). If no new settings appear in window after a minute user should click on the refresh button to research for NM-541 devices over local network.
2.2 Manual IP configuration (Static IP) Configuring Network settings manually (recommended) can be done by checking Manually configure network settings radio button. Select for every NM-541 a different address in IP address field matching the 192.168.0.X or 192.168.1.X local network standard and leave subnet mask the same (255.255.255.0) for every device. Click Save to continue. NM-541 will then restart and after a minute it will appear again with no warnings in the window. In the bottom left corner the new IP details appear indicating that NM-541 it is manually configured (Static IP). If no new settings appear in window after a minute user should click on the refresh button to research for NM541 devices over local network
TECHNICAL APENDIX C CONFIGURATION OF THE NM-541 FOR UDP SOCKETS MULTICAST FUNCTION After discovering and setting the NM-541 to a fixed IP address as described in the user manual the following steps must be completed to setup the device to multicast the received NMEA data to UDP sockets. STEP 1: Double click on the discovered device in the Digi Discovery Utility to bring up the login menu on an http explorer. Complete the appropriate field and press the Login button Username: root Password: nm2003 STEP 2: Click on Serial Ports under Configuration menu as shown below
STEP 3: Click on Port 1 under Serial Port Configuration menu STEP 4: Click Change Profile to set a new profile
STEP 5: Select the UDP sockets radio button and press Apply STEP 6: Configure the new page as shown below. 1. Select the Automatically send serial data option 2. Deselect the Send after following number of milliseconds option if enabled 3. Set the number of bytes to 1 in the Send after the following number of bytes option 4. In the box under the Send data to the following network services fill a distinctive name for the computer that will receive the data, the IP address and the UDP port the software is configured for reception and press the Add button. With the UDP multicast feature you can add multiple computers provided that you specify each time the above particulars and add it to the table
STEP 7: After successful configuration of the Port Profile Settings menu it should look as follows. Click on Apply to store the changes STEP 8: Click on the Basic Serial Settings menu and configure Baud rate to 4.800, Data Bits to 8, Parity to None, Stop Bits to 1 and Flow Control to None. Supply a name in the Description edit box to describe configured NM-541 device
STEP 9: After successful completion select Serial Ports menu to confirm the changes. Click on Logout to end the configuration procedure
