CHAPTER 2: Overview 2.1 Introduction 2. Overview Use the ServSwitch DT DVI Pro to control up to two or four DVI-enabled computers from a single USB keyboard, DVI video monitor, and USB mouse. The ServSwitch switches DVI and USB signals between computers. It provides crystal-clear digital video resolutions (up to 1600 x 1200 @ 60 Hz). A built-in 2-port USB hub with 2-level switching technology allows USB peripherals to be shared without disconnecting and reconnecting when switching computers. Switch computers in two ways: Asynchronously switch between USB computers and multiple USB peripheral devices using hotkeys on your keyboard. Or, use the unit s front-panel buttons to select ports manually. Plus, you can automatically scan and monitor all computers connected to your ServSwitch. LEDs built into the front-panel buttons light when the console controls the corresponding computer. Designed for multimedia environments, the switch supports audio and comes with built-in microphone and speaker jacks. And, to maintain compatibility with the latest devices and computers, just upgrade the switch s firmware. 2.2 What s Included Your package should contain the following items. If anything is missing or damaged, please contact Black Box at 724-746-5500. (1) ServSwitch DT DVI Pro, 2- or 4-Port (KV7014A or KV7015A) (1) 9-VDC, 600-mA power adapter This user s manual 7

SERVSWITCH DT DVI PRO 2.3 Hardware Description 2.3.1 CABLES For maximum signal quality, use only high-quality coax-based DVI cable. Each computer that you want to connect to the KVM switch requires one ServSwitch Cable (EHN7001415-0006, EHN7001415-0009, or EHN7001415-0015). 2.3.2 FRONT VIEW The ServSwitch DT DVI Pros front panels are shown in Figures 2-1 and 2-2. Before installation, consider whether or not you intend to use the manual port selectors for port switching; the length of the cables attached to your keyboard, mouse, and monitor; the distance between your computers and your console; and the length of the cables you ll use to connect your computers to the ServSwitch. 11

SERVSWITCH DT DVI PRO 3. Installation This chapter explains how to install a single ServSwitch DT DVI Pro. NOTE Before you begin, make sure all devices that you will be connecting are powered off. To prevent damage caused by ground potential difference, make sure that all devices are properly grounded. 3.1 Powering Up the ServSwitch Connect the 9-VDC, 600-mA power adapter s connector to the power jack on the switch s back panel. Plug the power adapter into a wall outlet. Power connector Wall outlet Power adapter Figure 3-1. Connect the power adapter to the ServSwitch. 3.2 Connecting Microphones and Speakers (Optional) For a typical desktop publishing application, you can share four computers via one keyboard, mouse, monitor, speaker, and microphone. Connect your speakers (3.5-mm) to the connectors labeled with a speaker symbol on the either the ServSwitch unit s back or front panel. Connect the microphone to the front-panel 3.5-mm microphone port. NOTE Use either the switch s front-panel speaker port or the rear-panel console speaker port. These ports are wired together in a Y- configuration so the user can connect the speakers to either the front or back. Using both front and rear speaker ports simultaneously will result in audio loss. 12

CHAPTER 3: Installation 3.2.1 CABLE DISTANCE REQUIREMENTS USB signals are the strongest when transmitted up to 15 feet (4.5 m) between the KVM and the CPU. Beyond 15 feet, the signal will likely degrade, which can cause the device to fail. CAUTION Do not place cables near machines that create electrical noise such as fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, etc. The cables or switch might be damaged. 3.2.2 CONNECTING THE CONSOLE 1. Power off all computers. 2. Your USB keyboard and USB mouse connect directly to the USB keyboard and mouse ports (see below). USB keyboard USB mouse Figure 3-2.
