MCS Software Installation Guide This document provides instructions for installing the MCS software: MCS Requirements (page 2) Installing the MCS (page 3) Before You Begin (page 4) Upgrading Your MCS to 6.1 (page 6) Installing the MCS Base Operating System (page 7) Installing the MCS Software (page 9) Getting Help (page 11) If you are upgrading or adding hardware to your MCS, you should complete those tasks before you proceed with this software installation. For more information, see Guidelines for Upgrading Your MCS to Release 6.1. 750-10276-000 Rev. A Page 1
MCS Requirements The following is a list of minimum requirements to install the MCS software: At least 340 MB of hard disk space. To determine hard-disk size, type CHKDSK from a Workplace Shell window. You should upgrade if the hard disk is smaller than 340 MB. Note To comply with warranty and functional requirements, you must purchase a replacement hard-disk drive from your MCS supplier. Pentium 90 MHz CPU for 20-slot systems 486/586 motherboard for 7-slot systems 50 MHz BPU IIs in the chassis (revisions BA, C6 or later) IMPU (revisions AD, B4 or later) Standard VGA monitor and keyboard for administrative tasks that are performed at the MCS Page 2 750-10276-000 Rev. Upgrading Your MCS to 6.1 Installing the MCS Base Operating System Installing the MCS Software Caution To avoid having scheduled conferences start while the upgrade is in progress, unschedule conferences scheduled to begin within a day of the time you plan to upgrade. Also, ensure that you backup your databases, as described in Maintaining Your MCS. Before You Begin Before you begin, you should perform these tasks: Backup Your Database (page 4) Extend the CD-ROM Drive Clips (page 5) Backup Your Database Before you install this software, you should first backup your database. For information about backing up and restoring the MCS see Chapter 3 of Maintaining Your MCS. Page 4 750-10276-000 Rev. A
Extend the CD-ROM Drive Clips Before you use the CD-ROM drive in your MCS, ensure that the bottom and top clips in the CD-ROM drive bay are extended, as shown in the Figure 1 and insert the CD-ROM into the drive. Figure 1. Extending the CD-ROM Clips 750-10276-000 Rev. A Page 5
Upgrading Your MCS to 6.1 If you are upgrading to 6.1, your upgrade procedure will vary depending on which version of the MCS you are upgrading from. MCS Version 5.1 or later previously upgraded to 5.1 5.0x To upgrade to 6.1 You do not need to upgrade the Base Operating System. Proceed directly to Installing the MCS Software (page 9). If you previously upgraded your MCS (including database) to version 5.1, you must run fixdb.exe before you begin the upgrade process. (Contact customer support for the utility.) 1 Install the MCS Base Operating System. See Installing the MCS Base Operating System (page 7). 2 Install the MCS software. See Installing the MCS Software (page 9). Page 6 750-10276-000 Rev. A
MCS Version 2.x, 3.x, 4.x To upgrade to 6.1 Caution: If you are upgrading from versions prior to 5.0, your database cannot be updated to 6.1 automatically. Perform the same tasks described for upgrading 5.0x. Installing the MCS Base Operating System To upgrade to version 6.1 from versions that are 5.0 or earlier, you must install a new base operating system using the procedure below. To upgrade the base operating system from CD-ROM: 1. Ensure the CD-ROM drive clips are extended (see Extend the CD-ROM Drive Clips on page 5). 2. Insert the MCS Boot Disk 1 of 2 into the diskette drive, and reboot the MCS by pressing Reset. After several minutes, you see the A: prompt. 750-10276-000 Rev. A Page 7
3. Insert the MCS Boot Disk 2 of 2 into the diskette drive. 4. Type UPGRADE at the A: prompt. 5. The MCS OS Upgrade Installation window appears. 6. Insert the Base Operating System CD into the CD-ROM drive, and press Enter. After several minutes, you see the MCS OS Upgrade Installation window. 7. Remove the MCS Boot Disk 2 of 2 and Base Operating System CD from the drives. 8. Press any key to reboot the MCS. When the MCS reboot is complete, you are prompted to proceed with the installation of the MCS software. Page 8 750-10276-000 Rev. A
Installing the MCS Software To install the MCS: 1. From CD-ROM: Ensure that the bottom clips in the CD-ROM drive bay are extended, and insert the CD-ROM into the drive. Type: D:INSTALL (D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.) From diskette: Insert the MCS Software Disk 1 of 8 in the diskette drive, and type the following command: A:INSTALL (A: is the drive letter of your diskette drive.) 2. Respond to the prompts. When the application software is installed, you see a prompt to reboot the system. 3. If you do not have an Ethernet adapter, you have completed the installation process. If you have an Ethernet adapter installed in the MCS, you are prompted to configure the IP address. At the prompt, type Y and Enter to configure the Ethernet adapter. 750-10276-000 Rev. A Page 9
4. Type the IP address of the MCS on the next line, and press Enter. 5. At the confirmation prompt, type Y, and press Enter. You see a prompt to configure the subnet mask. 6. Type Y, and press Enter. 7. Type the subnet mask of the MCS on the next line, and press Enter. You see a prompt to confirm the subnet mask. 8. At the confirmation prompt, type Y, to confirm your entry and press Enter. For more information about configuring the MCS IP address or the MCS subnet mask, see Maintaining Your MCS. 9. Reboot the MCS. Note If the MCS does not reboot properly, check the startup.log for errors by typing edit startup.log at the C: prompt. For assistance, call Customer Service.
