Please note that we have tested with Windows 7 XP Mode under Microsoft Virtual PC, with poor results. We recommend you choose VMware Player 4 or Oracle VirtualBox 4 with a Windows 7 32-bit install. In this document, we run you through the steps required to install a Virtual Windows 7 32-bit system using VMware Player, running on top of Windows 7 64-bit as the base operating system.. After doing so, you will be able to follow the standard Windows installation instructions from within the virtual machine that you create.
VMware Player - Detailed Installation Steps The following detailed steps will assist you with the installation of Windows 7 32-bit as a virtual machine under VMware Player 4, running under Windows 7 64-bit. STEP 1. Open your web browser and navigate to: http://www.vmware.com/go/get-player You may need to register your details in order to download VMware Player 4, as shown below STEP 2. After you have logged into your VMware account, you will be returned to the download page, where you will be able to select the download for VMware Player 4 for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, as shown below.
STEP 3. You may be prompted as shown below. You may safely select Run. STEP 4. Following download, you will be presented with the VMware Player installation wizard. Follow the prompts as instructed. At the end of installation, you should see the following screen, confirming successful installation and prompting you to Restart Now. You may do so.
STEP 5. Following the restart of your host operating system, navigate to VMware Player in your start menu. Start the application. You will be presented with the VMware Player welcome screen, as shown below. Click Create a New Virtual Machine. STEP 6. When you are prompted, insert your Windows 7 32-bit installer disc, and click Next. Please ensure you insert the proper disc, as only a 32-bit Windows virtual installation will support running Micro Planner X-Pert V3.5.1.
STEP 7. VMware Player will prompt you to enter your Windows 7 Product Key, as shown below. You may do so. Please select your edition of Windows 7 from the drop-down box, making sure that it matches the edition printed next to your Product Key on your Certificate of Authentication. Optionally, you may specify a Windows administrator username and password. When you have entered the relevant details, you may click Next. STEP 8. VMware Player will prompt you to name this Virtual Machine. You may do so. Click Next to continue the Easy Install process.
STEP 9. You will be prompted to choose a disk capacity, as shown below. You may accept the defaults by clicking Next. Please do not resize this disk later, as it may interfere with our software protection mechanism. STEP 10. VMware Player will provide a summary of your installation options, as shown below. Click Finish to accept, and the Easy Install process will begin.
STEP 11. The installation will now proceed automatically. During installation, you may be prompted to download the VMware tools software, as shown below. You should do so, as it will aid with the integration of VMware Player with your operating system. STEP 12. Following the installation of Windows 7 32-bit as a Virtual Machine, you will be presented with the Windows Desktop, within the VMware window. Please wait as VMware Tools is installed, as shown below. Your Virtual Machine (running Windows 7 32-bit) may be restarted during this operation. Your Host system (running Windows 7 64-bit) will not be restarted.
STEP 13. Once the installation of the Windows 7 32-bit Virtual Machine is fully complete, you should be presented with a view similar to that shown below. Note how Windows 7 32-bit is shown as a VMware window within your Windows 7 64-bit desktop. STEP 14. Within the VMware window, select Virtual Machine, and then select Virtual Machine Settings from the drop-down menu, as shown below.
STEP 15. You will be presented with the Virtual Machine Settings screen. Select the Option tab, and then select Shared Folders from the list along the left-hand side. The Add button should appear at the bottom-right portion of the screen, as shown below. Click Add to continue. STEP 16. You will be presented with the Add Shared Folder Wizard, as shown below. Click Next to continue.
STEP 17. When prompted, browse and select your Desktop folder. Your details should be similar to that shown below (substitute your user name where appropriate). Click Next to continue. STEP 18. When prompted to set attributes, you may accept the defaults and click Next, as shown below.
STEP 19. You will be returned to the Virtual Machine Settings screen. Check the box marked Map as a network drive in Windows guests. Confirm that your Desktop is shown in the list of shared folders, as shown below. You may return to this screen at a later date to share additional folders, if necessary, using a similar process. For now, you may click OK to continue. STEP 20. Within the VMware window, start Windows Explorer or, alternatively, navigate to Computer. When you are presented with Windows Explorer, select Network from the bottom of the left-hand sidebar. If you see a drop-down notification that Network discovery and File sharing are turned off, click the notification and select Turn on network discovery and file sharing, as shown below.
STEP 21. If you have selected to turn on network discovery and file sharing, you will be prompted to select an option. You may select the top option, as shown below. STEP 22. Select the address bar, and enter \\vmware-host as shown below. You should be presented with a Shared Folders connection. Click through until you reach your shared Desktop.
STEP 23. You should now be able to see the files that are present on your normal desktop from within the VMware window. Place the installer file for Micro Planner X-Pert V3.5.1 Digital Download Edition onto your Windows 7 64-bit desktop (your normal desktop), as shown below. The correct file should already be named xpert351setup.exe. Notice that the icon also appears from within your VMware window. You may need refresh the windows explorer view by clicking the refresh icon next to the address bar.
STEP 24. You should now be able to double-click and start the installation of Micro Planner X-Pert V3.5.1 from within the VMware window, as shown below. The installation will now proceed as per the standard installation instructions. After installation, you may launch Micro Planner X-Pert V3.5.1 via the windows start menu, accessed from within the VMware Player window. If you shutdown the Windows 7 32-bit virtual machine, you will need to start the Windows 7 virtual machine from within the VMware Player welcome screen, before you can start Micro Planner X-Pert V3.5.1 again.
