2. Introduction 2.1 General The USB Card upgrades your PC to the faster Universal Serial Bus (USB). It s plug-and-play and provides a userfriendly interface. USB technology supports up to 127 physical devices in a tiered-star configuration. Each device has a maximum of 16 endpoints. Devices can be either low-speed (1.5 Mbps) or full-speed (12 Mbps). 2.2 Features Fully compatible with USB OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) Rev. 1.0. Complies with PCI Local Bus 2.1 specification. USB device bandwidth of up to 12 Mbps. Supports up to 127 USB devices including keyboards, mice, monitors, scanners, printers, telephones, joysticks, gamepads. Controls two USB ports at 1.5 Mbps/12 Mbps. 4

3. Installation 3.1 General Follow these steps to install the Card and software: 1. Add the USB driver to a system that is running Windows 95 OSR2 version. 2. Install the Card into your computer. 3. Install the software for either Windows 95 or Windows 98. 3.2 Installing the USB Driver in Windows 95 OSR2 To add the USB driver to a system that is running Windows 95 OSR2, follow these steps: NOTE We strongly recommend that you run Scandisk over your system before proceeding with the following steps. 1. Turn your computer on. 2. Insert the USB update driver diskette into a floppy drive. 6

3. From the start menu, select Run. 4. Type in a:\usbsupp.exe (where a: is the floppy drive) as shown in Figure 3-1. Figure 3-1. Run screen. NOTE If your Windows 95 is an earlier version other than OSR2, the system will indicate that the driver update cannot be completed. You must reinstall Windows 95 OSR2 version in order to update the USB driver. The Card will not work with Windows versions earlier than Windows 95 OSR2. 3.3 Hardware Installation Follow these steps to install the USB Card in your computer: 1. Turn the power off to your computer and disconnect the power cable. 7

2. Open the computer case. 3. Select an open PCI slot. Remove the cover plate for that slot. 4. Push the USB Card into the slot. 5. Attach the Card s bracket to the back of the computer with the screw to fix it in place. 6. Close the computer case. 7. Connect the power cable and turn the power on to your computer. 3.4 Installing the USB Card in Windows 95 OSR2 NOTE You must already have Windows 95 with USB driver or updated USB supplement installed on your computer and running properly before installing the USB Card. 8

1. After you turn your computer on, the Windows 95 will start detecting the USB Card. See Figure 3-2. New Hardware Found Unknown device has been found. Windows is installing the software for your new Hardware. Figure 3-2. Detecting the USB Card. 9

2. Click Next to let Windows 95 search for the updated USB driver from the Update Device Driver Wizard window. Figure 3-3. Update Device Driver Wizard window. 10

3. If the Standard OpenHDC Host Controller installation message appears on the screen, click Finish to let Windows 95 search the drivers. Click the OK button to continue. Figure 3-4. Searching the Drivers. If the Standard OpenHDC Host Controller installation message does NOT appear on the screen: A. Make sure you have Windows 95 OSR-2 with USB supplement added. Reinstall if necessary. 11

B. Power down the system, and reseat the card. Then try again. C. If the installation message still does not appear, call Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500. 4. After the installation is complete, attach the USB peripheral on the USB connector, reboot the system, and then verify the resources configuration in the following brief steps: Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. Click the System Icon; select the Device Manager tab. You should see a configuration similar to the next figure on the screen. If any yellow exclamation point appears next to the device item, please refer to the Appendix to solve the device conflict. 12

Device Manager tab. 3.5 Installing the USB Card in Windows 98 NOTE You must already have Windows 98 installed on your computer and running properly before installing the USB Card. 13

1. After you install your Card into a PCI slot in your computer, the Windows 98 Plug-and-Play will start detecting the USB Card and will load the driver automatically. The Add New Hardware Wizard screen will appear. Figure 3-6. Add New Hardware Wizard screen. 2. Click Next to continue. The Wizard will prompt, What do you want Windows to do? 14

Add New Hardware Wizard Windows has found an updated driver for this device, and also some other drivers that should work with this device. What do you want to install? Add New Hardware Wizard Windows driver file search for the device: CMD USB0670 PCI to USB Open Host Controller Windows is now ready to install the best driver for this device. 6. Click Next to continue. The Install Completed screen appears. Install Completed screen. 7. Click Next to continue. 8. Attach the USB peripheral on the USB connector. Reboot the system after installation is complete. 18

Appendix: Troubleshooting Problem: A device in your computer does not work, or does not work properly, after the USB Card is installed. Solution: There might be a hardware conflict between the USB Card and another device. 1. Try removing other hardware cards in your system to isolate the source of conflict. Once found, try changing the settings on the other device. 2. Or reconfigure the resources manually: I. From the Windows 95 main screen, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. II. Double-click the System Icon and select the Device Manager tab. IlI. From Device Manager, double-click the Universal Serial Bus Controller item. The list of sub-devices will be displayed. IV. Highlight the Standard Open HDC USB Host Adapter, and then click the resources tab. 19

V. Change the settings by: a. Unchecking the Use automatic settings check box. b. Double-clicking the item in the resource settings: list box, and then changing the settings (IRQ, I/O address, and so on). VI. Once resources have been changed, click the OK button. The driver will automatically be reconfigured to operate with the new resources and without device conflict. You may be asked to restart your computer. Problem: I need to uninstall the USB driver and reinstall my previous Windows 95 OSR2 system. How do I do that? Solution: Follow these instructions: NOTE To avoid possible corruption of your system, do not reinstall your previous Windows OSR2 by directly running Windows setup.exe. 1. Turn your system off and unplug the USB Card. 20

2. Turn your system on. From the Control Panel window, select the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. From Add/Remove Programs Properties window, highlight USB Supplement to OSR2, and then press the Add/Remove... button. 4. Reboot the system. We strongly recommend that you run scandisk to repair any defective folders or files. 5. Restart your system again, and then reinstall your previous Windows 95 OSR2. 6. If you need to reinstall the USB Card, follow the instructions in this manual. 21
