Using the FDR for Mac Users - 3 Introduction

How to manage your FDR account from a Macintosh Reading this manual will teach you how to manage your Faculty Document Repository (FDR) account from a Macintosh: Where Do I find Cyberduck? Cyberduck can be downloaded from the author's site. Where do I install Cyberduck (if necessary) Macintosh computers that are delivered from the Help Desk almost certainly have Cyberduck installed, therefore, you may not need anything installed to get started. Cyberduck has no installer per say, once the file is unzipped you can place it anywhere. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 4

Where to upload files to the FDR with Cyberduck? Cyberduck allows you to upload and download files to the FDR to be used in your Blackboard online courses. These can include audio, video, PowerPoint, Word Processing files etc. How to view my documents from a Web Browser Once configured and loaded with files you & your students can reach your documents using your web browsers. Please see the table above to connect to correctly format the address (URL) needed in the browser. Also, please note that QuickTime Streaming is available in two flavors. The URL can begin with RTSP or HTTP. If you begin your URL with HTTP then the streaming movie will open in the browser window, however, if you use RTSP the link will open an external applicaion (QuickTime Player). Also worth noting is that if you use http when it opens in the browser window you see the real path to the FDR. If you are trying to obscure access to your movies outside of the BB environment then this might be such a good idea. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 5

Using the FDR for Mac Users - 6 FDR Overview

FDR Overview An overview on the Faculty Document Repository (FDR) What is the FDR? FDR stands for Faculty Document Repository. The FDR is a central place where you can store your documents that will be accessible on or off campus as well as link to documents from your Blackboard course. The FDR can handle an array of document types and can handle multiple protocols. (ex: web pages, QuickTime streaming (QTSS), Windows media streaming(mms), document repository (private), etc). Where is the FDR? The FDR is a locally hosted server on campus so that you can be sure that your data is kept safe. In addition to being available to on campus users it's also available to students and faculty from off campus making it much easier for Faculty to work on course content and for students to reach Blackboard course content. Who can use the FDR? The FDR is available for use by any faculty member. If you don't already have an account then contact the Help Desk (x8803 or helpdesk@ric.edu) and request one be created for you. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 7

Cyberduck (Donationware) Cyberduck is an open source FTP and SFTP, WebDAV, Cloud Files and Amazon S3 client for Mac OS X licensed under the GPL. It supports FTP/TLS (FTP secured over SSL/TLS), using AUTH TLS as well as directory synchronization. The user interacts with the Cocoa application's GUI, including file transfer by drag and drop, and notifications via Growl. In addition, it is also able to open some files in external text editors. Cyberduck includes a bookmark manager and supports the Mac OS X Keychain and Bonjour networking. It supports multiple languages including English, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Slovak, Spanish, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, Danish, Polish, Indonesian, Catalan, Welsh, Thai, Turkish and Hebrew. -- from Wikipedia Cyberduck (in a Nutshell) Wow, that was more information than most of you needed to know. For your purposes, in using the Faculty Document Repository (FDR), we just need to know that the FDR requires a Secure FTP client (abbreviated as S/FTP). If you forget the rest of the information about Cyberduck and the FDR just remember S/FTP. It's a key piece of information for gaining access to your files. One more important bit of information worth noting is that Cyberduck is the only S/FTP client that is supported for the Macintosh by the RIC Help Desk (x8803). Where do I get this duck thing? If you are using a college issued Macintosh you should already have a recent version of Cyberduck installed on your machine (It should be located in your "/Applications" folder). If, however, your machine is your personal property then you will have to install Cyberduck yourself. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 9

Downloading Cyberduck Cyberduck can be found here at the authors site. In the upper right hand corner of the web page you will see an icon of a.zip file. You can just click on the ZIP icon and the latest version of Cyberduck will be downloaded (normally to your browser downloads folder unless you have changed that setting). Once you have downloaded Cyberduck it's time to choose where to install it. Where do I install this duck thing? There are two supported locations for where Cyberduck can reside. Since there is no installer, per say, you simply double click on the ZIP file and in short order you see our lovely duck friend sitting next to the ZIP file. Once you have this unzipped Cyberduck application file you can place the app in one of two places: Using the FDR for Mac Users - 10

The main /Applications folder The users (your) /Applications folder; you may have to create it if it doesn't exist at the following path ~/yourname/applications Ideally, put it in the /Applications folder unless you don't have Administrator priveleges, otherwise it will work equally well in your ~/yourname/applications folder What does Cyberduck cost? Cyberduck is free. It's an opensource project. While you are under no obligation to purchase this product, the author will periodically nag you to dontate money to the Cyberduck project. You can ignore this or choose to send him some money. By checking "Don't show again for this version." you can put off the nag screen until the next time you upgrade. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 11

Managing the FDR with Cyberduck Using the FDR for Mac Users - 12

O.K., I launched the duck now what? On the first time of launching of Cyberduck the application willask you a question Cyberduck opens with a question? The first time that you open Cyberduck it will ask to be made the default application for all of your FTP and S/FTP links. Please make sure to click on the "Change" button. From now on Cyberduck will automatically open when you click on an S/FTP link. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 13

Bookmarks Window After launching, Cyberduck will open the Bookmark window by default. In order to work with your FDR account you need to click on the "Open Connection" button in the upper left corner of the Bookmark window. This will open the Configuration window where you enter you FDR details. The FDR uses the same account name/password that you use with your email, please have it handy. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 14

How do I use Cyberduck to connect to the FDR? By default the first time that you open Cyberduck it will be configured with the factory defaults. We need to change them as follows: Step 1. Change to the 3rd Menu item to "SFTP (SSH File Tranfer Protocol)" Step 2. Enter the following in the server field: "facultyaccess.ric.edu" Step 3. Enter your user name and Password Step 4. Next to "More Options" click on the arrow and in the "Path" field enter "/ " (VERY IMPORTANT!) Using the FDR for Mac Users - 15

Your Cyberduck configuration should look like this! If your configuration looks like the screen above then you are all set to work with the FDR using Cyberduck. One thing worth noting is that if you check the box next to "Add to Keychain" then this configuration will be saved with your password encrypted. In the future, any time you double click on the Bookmark it will automatically open your FDR account without needing to enter the password. Please note checking this box is optional, in fact, if it's a public machine it's important not to save the password. If on the other hand you feel your machine is phyically secure then you can save the password. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 16

Cyberduck bookmark complete! From now on when you open Cyberduck you will find a bookmark saved for ease of access to your FDR account. If you want to edit the bookmark then select the bookmark and toggle the pencil button and it will open the configuration page for further editing. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 17

Cyberduck is connected to the FDR; now what? This lesson shows you how to add files, delete files, and where to place your files in the FDR directories. How do I add files to the FDR? Adding files to the FDR is as simple as dragging the file you want to upload from the Desktop to the open Cyberduck window. Alternately, Using the FDR for Mac Users - 18

How do I delete files? Files can be deleted by right clicking on a file. The above contextual menu appears. The selected file will be deleted once you release the mouse on the delete menu item. N.B. that you can also delete a file by selecting the file to be deleted and typing the "Command" key and the "delete" key together. Where do I put my files? Each filetype goes in a farily specific folder. The only folder where this makes no difference is the 'private' folder. These files can only be viewed by yourself. The permissions are set so that only you can read/write into the 'private' folder and no one else can even see the contents of the Using the FDR for Mac Users - 19

you can read/write into the 'private' folder and no one else can even see the contents of the 'private' folder. Common Mistake You can always tell what folder you have open by checking the Popup menu above the Connection window. One mistake that people commonly make is to try and move files into the first window they see. It is designated in the popup menu as seen above with simply a back slash. This is a special window showing the top most level of your FTP account and it's locked. You MUST put your files into one of the default folders. How do I view my files? Viewing your files in a web browser will confirm that they can be linked to from within the Blackboard LMS. Linking from Blackboard to the FDR This procedure describes how to link to a QuickTime file from Blackboard In the Cyberduck, double-click the qtmovies folder This step assumes that you already have placed the movie that you want to link to in the qtmedia folder on the FDR. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 21

Locate the file to which you want to link. In this example, we are going to select "sample_h264_300kbit.mp4" Using the FDR for Mac Users - 22

Open your Blackboard course and then navigate to the location where you want to add the URL link. Under Build Content, click URL Create URL 01.) Enter a name. 02.) For the URL, use http://qtmedia.ric.edu/faculty/ followed by your username/filename. (For example: http://qtmedia.ric.edu/faculty/jmello/sample_h264_300kbit.mp4) Using the FDR for Mac Users - 23

(For example: http://qtmedia.ric.edu/faculty/jmello/sample_h264_300kbit.mp4) Note: If the file is located within a subfolder within the qtmedia folder then after your username you would need to type in / followed by the folder name and / then enter the file name. (For example: http://qtmedia.ric.edu/faculty/jmello/qtss_movies/sample_h264_300kbit.mp4) Set External Link Options 03.) Below section four, make sure that Permit Users to View the Content Item is set to YES. 04.) Since you re linking to a video or audio, we recommend that you set Open in New Window to YES. 05.) Track Number of Views and Select Date and Time Restrictions are optional settings. 06.) Click Submit. The link has been added to your Blackboard course. Using the FDR for Mac Users - 24
