Introduction After the XBRL instance document has been submitted to the US SEC, it will be (publicly) viewable on the website. In order to preview what the document will look like, you can use the US SEC preview option in Disclosure Management. This option uses the Arelle rendering engine. Note that US SEC itself will also use this engine when showing the report, see https://www.sec.gov/structureddata/edgarvalandrender 3
Creating the Preview Reminder: the US SEC Preview plugin needs to be installed, otherwise you cannot generate the preview. There are two ways of creating the preview in Disclosure Management, obviously resulting in the same output. Open the Instance document, on the General tab 1. Select the option US SEC Preview under the adhoc options 2. Click on create and tick the US SEC preview option 4
In both cases, a task is generated (as the Task Engine will run the creation of Preview) Once the task completes, for the Ad-hoc previewing, you simply click on the link to open the archive. 5
If the preview was generated together with the instance, you will see the following: On the revisions tab, the instance has been created and also the preview (indicated by different icons) Select the revision, click on download and select the preview object 6
Ultimately, both methods will download a.zip archive, which contains the files needed for the preview. Click on the FilingSummary.htm to open the preview (note: you need to allow running ActiveX controls) The preview will open in IE 7
Troubleshooting If the preview fails, you will see a brief error description in the task log. As the preview is created by the Task Engine, you need to check the Task Engine logs. The debug log will have the error displayed on the screen and (often) does not provide more information. 8
The log may reference a plugin log file e.g. 2017-01-04 06:42:15.2636 [5] [DEBUG] ==> PluginContext.View(): [Error] [104] An error occured during US SEC Preview. Check the plugin log file. There is no separate plugin log, the log being referred to is the error log of the Task Engine, This log will provide the underlying error(s) 9
Alternative way of creating the Preview There is another way of previewing. First, create the instance document (without the 3 tick-boxes checked) Download the revision, and extract the XML (instance) document The preview will be generated through the Fujitsu Xwand tool (see https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/download/attachments/452566079/dm_ussec_components.pdf) Open the Instance document 10
Select the Preview option (Tools, Report, SEC Preview) Use the Version3 (Arelle) option Set the output to folder (note: all content in this folder will be deleted in the process) 11
Once completed, this folder contains all the files used by the renderer Clicking on FilingSummary.htm will launch the browser and the report is rendered. 12
Please note: depending on your browser used and possible XBRL add-ons, the report may look different. 13
