Find funding on Research Professional Training session Gaelle Jolly Senior Information & Communications Officer Research Services research.services@admin.ox.ac.uk Hilary term 2018

Research funding opportunities database available to everyone at Oxford: www.researchprofessional.com Search opportunities from thousands of UK and international funders Receive email alerts when new funding opportunities match your criteria Access research policy news and articles on funders, grant programmes and other funding topics

Objectives At the end of the session you will be able to: 1. Log in to and navigate Research Professional 2. Carry out effective funding searches 3. Save searches and funding opportunities 4. Set up email alerts to receive updates 5. Share information with colleagues 6. Access news and articles on topics relevant to you

Access Research Professional Navigate to www.researchprofessional.com Click on Log in, then select University of Oxford and log in with your SSO Follow instructions if prompted to log in with your RP account or to create an account

Simple search Simple search just type in keywords to get started Discipline (eg Philosophy ) Funder (eg AHRC ) Award Type (eg travel for research purposes ) Avoid free text search Possible pitfalls Free text (don t use instead of discipline category as it is too broad) Don t try complex searches in the simple search

Exercise 1 1. Type politics in the simple search box 2. Select Politics and international studies (discipline) and run the search 3. Sort the results by funder country 4. Look at the details of a funding opportunity

Advanced search (recommended) Search by combining criteria

Is not any of Example criteria Oncology and not CRUK, MRC, Department of Health : You will receive results for anything indexed at the level of Oncology, but nothing from CRUK, MRC or Department of Health.

Match all criteria Match all criteria in the advanced search is selected by default. Example criteria Oncology and Cancer Research UK : you will receive results that have been filtered by the criteria you have chosen (eg only funding opportunities at the level of Oncology offered by CRUK).

Match any criteria Example criteria Oncology and CRUK, MRC, Department of Health : You will receive results for anything for oncology, plus any funding opportunities (not necessarily for oncology) from CRUK, MRC and Department of Health. Avoid. Stick to default option.

Exercise 2 1. Search for funding opportunities in geography with a closing date more than 21 days away (or no closing date) 2. Sort your results by funder 3. Exclude one of the funders by adding a funder criterion to your search 4. Refresh the results 5. Repeat the exercise with your own choice of criteria

Thesaurus/discipline index The discipline index has four main levels of increasingly specific terms, below an Any discipline level at the top. Social Sciences [Hub] Geography, Environmental Studies & Archaeology [Unit of Assessment/UoA] Geography [Clump] Human Geography [Node] There can be in-between terms at any level.

Changing the discipline index level The default in any search is to look for funding opportunities exactly at the level of the chosen discipline index keyword. To broaden or narrow the search click the edit button. Then tick the boxes to refine your results.

Generally, Exactly, Broader, Narrower Exactly : you will get funding opportunities indexed at exactly the level of eg Arts & Humanities. Generally : you will get funding opportunities indexed above, exactly at the level of, and below eg Arts & Humanities. Advanced : you can choose any combination of: exact matches (exactly at the level of eg Arts & Humanities ) broader matches (at a level higher than eg Arts & Humanities, ie funding opportunities for any discipline, not subject-specific) narrower matches (at levels lower than eg Arts & Humanities )

Discipline keywords indexed under more than one parent term Be careful when choosing broader matches under the advanced option or when choosing generally if discipline keywords have been indexed under more than one parent term. Example: the discipline environmental management is indexed under two parent terms.

Exercise 3 1. Go to the discipline index, find a discipline relevant to your area, and select it 2. Browse the award type options and select one 3. Run the search 4. Go back to the discipline field, click on generally, run the search and compare results. 5. Go back to the discipline field, click on advanced, select exact and broader, run the search and compare results.

Sharing results You can email a search or selected funding opportunities to colleagues: To share a search, either copy the URL, or click on the email button. To share opportunities, place a tick in the box next to each one, and select email from the Actions drop-down menu.

Saving results and searches You can: Bookmark funding opportunities Bookmarks are static, ie they are not automatically updated Save a search Saved searches are dynamic : the results are refreshed every time you run them

Email alerts You can set up alerts based on your saved searches to receive any new results by email: When first saving a search, select Save and alert At any time, click on email alerts, and tick the saved searches you would like to receive alerts on

Exercise 4 1. Go back to your previous search or set up a new search that matches your interests, combining at least two criteria 2. Bookmark at least one funding opportunity 3. Save your search and set up an alert
