May 2017 3 Section 1: Downloading the Latest R2 Firmware. 1. Open a web browser and navigate to www.trimble.com 2. Click the link for Support and Training and open the Support A-Z list. 3. Click the link for R2 GNSS Receiver for GIS Applications.
May 2017 4 4. Click the Technical Support tab. 5. Click R2 GNSS Receiver Downloads.
May 2017 5 6. Click the link for Trimble R2 Firmware. 7. Click the download link for the required Firmware version. Important Note: Firmware can only be upgraded. The receiver cannot be rolled back to an earlier Firmware version.
May 2017 6 8. The Firmware will download as soon as the link is clicked. If you get the option to save or run the file choose Save As and save it to a folder on your PC. The Windows default save location is the Downloads folder. Note: If unsure where the file downloaded do a file search for.timg files.
May 2017 7 Section 2: Connecting the R2 to a Wifi Enabled Personal Computer (PC). Note: A Wifi connection between a PC and the R2 will be used to update the Firmware. Updating the settings on the R2 receiver will require a Wifi enabled PC. 1. On the Wifi enabled PC make sure that the Wifi radio is turned on. 2. Close any programs on the PC that are using an internet connection. 3. Turn on the R2 by pressing the power button. The Wifi radio will automatically activate on the receiver. 4. Open the list of available Wifi connections by clicking the Wifi radio button on the PC s control panel. This button should be located in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Note: A list of available networks can also be found in the PC s Control Panel: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Set up a new connection or network
May 2017 8 5. Click the R2 receiver from the list of available Wifi sources. The receiver will be listed as Trimble GNSS (last 4 digits of unit serial number) 6. Click Connect 7. Once the receiver is connected it will move to the top of the list and have a status of No Internet. 8. Minimize the list of available Wifi networks. By clicking the Wifi radio button.
May 2017 9 Section 3: Accessing the R2 Web User Interface (UI). 1. Open a web browser on the PC that is connected to the R2 receiver. Note: Internet Explorer 9.0 or later, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome are all supported. 2. Type one of the following IP addresses into the address bar of the web browser and hit enter on the keyboard: 192.168.142.1 or 192.168.143.1 3. A web UI will appear requesting login credentials. Type the following username and password to access the R2 settings: Username: admin Password: password
May 2017 10 4. Once connected to the R2 web UI the Receiver Status Activity screen will be visible. 5. Click the Firmware tab on the left hand side of the screen. 6. The following information will poplulate regarding the R2 Firmware status. The Firmware downloaded in Section 1 has to have been released before this date. If the Firmware was released after this date a warranty extension has to be purchased before the Firmware update can be applied. Current Firmware version installed n the R2. Release date of the currently installed Firmware version.
May 2017 11 7. Click the Choose File button to select the Firmware upgrade file downloaded in Section 1. Important Note: The Firmware version downloaded in Section 1 has to be newer than the active Firmware version and has to have been released before the Firmware warranty date. 8. Choose the Firmware upgrade file downloaded in Section 1. 9. Click the Open button.
May 2017 12 10. Click the Install New Firmware button to begin the Firmware update. 11. The following message will appear with the warning that any data stored to the internal memory of the R2 will be erased. Unless the R2 was used as a base station these files do not need downloaded from the device prior to updating. 12. Click the OK button to continue. Important Note: The following 3 screen shots show the Firmware installation process. DO NOT turn off the R2 or close the web browser until the process has completed. Turning off the receiver during an active Firmware update can cause internal damage to the receiver.

May 2017 14 Step 3: Cleaning up failsafe programming area. 13. Once step 3 of the update process has completed the web UI will reboot the R2. Once the R2 has rebooted follow the steps in Sections 2 and 3 to reconnect to the web UI.
May 2017 15 14. After reconnecting to the web UI return to the Firmware section and verify that the new Firmware was installed successfully. 15. If the Firmware installed successfully close the web UI and disconnect the R2 from the PC. The R2 has now been reconfigured with the new Firmware version and is ready for use in the field.
