WEST CORNWALL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEWSLETTER - AUTUMN 2010 WELCOME As part of continuing improvement of NHW communication throughout Devon and Cornwall, we are in the process of combining the various local databases of NHW members. This master list will be kept on the police internal computer system which will provide a secure, robust place which is accessible to all NHW police volunteers. The email address for contact with your local office has also changed to: NHW.CAMBORNE@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk Please use this address from this point onwards. Adam Riddel & Sgt Steve Parr 1
DID YOU KNOW? In Cornwall there will be 10,000 (Ten thousand) less victims of crime this year than there were 5 years ago! The Devon and Cornwall Police website has information and tips on dealing with Halloween night together with posters such as this to download! www.devoncornwall.police.uk 2
FORUM NEWS I thought that in this newsletter I would inform our new co-ordinators and remind our old co-ordinators what the forum is all about. The Forum is there to reflect and represent the voice of the NHW members in their area so that coordinators can receive the latest news from your DaCCWA representative and our uniformed colleagues. Also what is happening nationally in NHW. We meet four times a year around the district the next meeting is to be held at the COMMUNITY CENTRE FOUNDRY ROW REDRUTH ON THE 13 TH OCTOBER AT 7.30.PM This forum is open to all co-ordinators and we look forward to seeing you there.two of the items for discussion at the meeting are going to be street reps and speed watch. What are they? Come and find out your input would be welcome. 3
Since our last newsletter we have 3 new NHW schemes up and running and we welcome them to the family. As you are all aware, money is tight and. To keep costs down and to save our volunteer office staff time,if you have given us your e mail address we will be sending this newsletter as an attachment to an Email If you change your e mail address, please let us know. If you wish to be contacted in this way and you have not sent us your details please do so. May I once again remind you of our new E mail address? NHW.CAMBORNE@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk Can I reassure those without computers that we shall still be sending out copies of this newsletter by Royal Mail HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR OWN NHW SITE www.mynhw.co.uk 4
A REQUEST FOR YOUR HELP!! Printing and sending newsletters obviously incurs a financial cost. With the ever growing use of computers in households, we strongly feel the primary method of communication in the future will be by email. This is free and instant, and allows two way communication. The plan is that we email the newsletter to you, the co-ordinator, and you can then distribute it to your scheme members by email too. If you as a co-ordinator, don t have email, or access to it, we will collate the email addresses for your scheme members here at Camborne and send the newsletter directly to them for you. This will provide as wide a circulation of information as possible. We will of course still send you the newsletter by post if email is not an option. 5
The Request!!! 1. During the next couple of months we would be grateful if you could find time to either visit, or leaflet drop each house in your scheme to ascertain if they have email. 2. If you use email yourself and are happy to pass on information in that way then simply collect the email addresses for you to utilise in forwarding information to that member. 3. If you don t have email yourself, is there someone in your scheme that will assist you in this respect? 4. If not, then ask the scheme members to send us a message here at Camborne so we can forward messages directly to them. We appreciate that some people are reluctant to give their email addresses out. The email address at Camborne is a secure address and any information is held on the police computer system. 6
If someone still does not wish to utilise this method of communication, then obviously we respect that and you will need to pass on the information in the usual way as you have been doing. Perhaps there is a public notice board or local shop where the newsletter can be made available to see??????? Information required. Name Address Phone number Email address --------------------------------------------------------------- Sector Inspector Camborne Pool Redruth I have recently returned to the role of Sector Inspector for Camborne, Pool and Redruth, I was last here over two years ago. My role once again includes a weekly scrutiny of all the recorded crimes for the area where I then set the policing plan for the following week. My first observation has been around the dramatic reduction in crime in certain crime type areas. The number of vehicles 7
broken into has dropped from an average of 10-15 to around 5 per week; the number of reports of property being damaged has also fallen and continues to do so. This fall cannot be attributed to one approach to tackling crime but the consequences of the combined efforts of all those involved. Neighbourhood Watch plays a big part in that. If the community works together we can continue to drive crime down. Our priorities will continue to be Prevent, Reduce and Detect Preventing crime for occurring in the first place either by designing out crime or making it impossible for the criminal to commit crime. Reducing crime where it does occur and changing our tactics to make it more difficult for the offenders. Detecting crime and bringing offenders to justice, gathering sufficient evidence to ensure the right result for the victim of crime. Neighbourhood Watch has a part to play in all aspects of our work and together we can make West Cornwall an even safer place to live Inspector Mark Bolt YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAMS 8
