BMC Capacity Optimization Extended Edition 9.5.1 AIX Enhancements
Support for AIX Active Memory Expansion (AME) mode Metrics displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view for CPU and Memory Allocation Frame name, alias name or host name if alias name not available Physical cores, total number cores assigned to the frame Unassigned cores, number cores not assigned to partitions on the frame CPU cores configured for partitions, number cores available for all partitions on the frame CPU cores allocated for Partitions, number cores allocated to all partitions on the frame Total memory, total physical memory assigned to the frame. Unassigned memory, memory that is net yet assigned to any partition Firmware memory, memory used by the hypervisor Memory configured for partitions, memory configured for all partitions Memory configured for instrumented partitions, memory configured for all partitions running agents Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 2
Enhanced visibility of AIX CPU and Memory allocation Active Memory Expansion (AME) mode [POWER7 feature: AIX 6.1 TL4 SP2 or later]: reduce memory allocation by memory compression Configured 6.25 GB 8 GB Expanded Compressed used AME expansion deficit Uncompressed used expansion factor = 1.31 system will automatically compress memory as needed notice: (un)compression uses up some overhead CPU No more compression possible OS will page memory New metrics related to AME as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: AME Mode: if AME is turned ON for this partition Expanded Memory: total memory available due to memory compression Compressed Memory: amount of memory that has been compressed Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 3
Support for AIX Active Memory Sharing (AMS) mode Active Memory Sharing (AMS) mode [PowerVM feature: POWER7 710_043 or later firmware]: memory pool share by SPLPARs Frame memory use under AMS Dedicated memory LPARs Shared memory SPLPARs LPAR1 LPAR2 LPAR3 LPAR4 LPAR5 Allocated logical sizes Physical frame memory dedicated unused Shared memory pool Paging devices Used via VIOS New AMS related metrics as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: AMS Mode Indicates if the LPAR is part of the shared memory pool Granted Memory Amount of memory given to this LPAR this is calculated by the hypervisor based on configured memory, memory contention of all LPARs in the shared memory pool Hypervisor Page Ins Paging due to memory sharing when paging is high memory over-commitment should be scaled back Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 4
Support for AIX Donate mode Donate mode [PowerVM feature]: dedicated LPARs (configured as «shared dedicated») may donate unused CPU cycles to shared pools to improve utilization by harvesting unused processing power New Donate mode metrics as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: Donated CPU Busy/Idle: show if DLPAR is donating CPU cycles periodically to the Pool in case the DLPAR is always donating the same amount or never donating cycles, then a processor reconfiguration may be a better option than Shared-Dedicated mode Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 5
Support for AIX Processor Folding mode Processor Folding mode [PowerVM feature]: unused virtual processors may be turned off automatically to save CPU when SPLPARs are idle New Processor Folding related metrics as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: Active Virtual Processors: how many virtual processors are active during peak load this can be used to scale up or down the number of configured virtual processors Notice: Processor Folding causes the hypervisor to reduce the number of virtual processors based on the load on the system to improve the efficiency of the system by reducing the overhead of running additional processors and also avoiding unnecessary context switches. Support for AIX N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) NPIV [Fibre Channel SAN feature from Power6, VIOS 2.1 FP 20.1]: allow VMs to access SAN devices with their own WW port name (requires configuring VIO partition controller and array LUN mapping and zoning for each LPAR) [IBM API only for AIX 6.1 TL8/AIX 7.1 TL2 or higher] Virtualizes I/O Does not virtualize I/O WWPN 101 LPAR1 LPAR2 WWPN 102 VIO partition FC adapter WWPN 100 VIO partition FC adapter WWPN 100 SAN Array I/O commands LUNs All mapped to VIO partition SAN Array LUNs I/O commands Mapped directly to LPAR1, LPAR2, and also to VIO partition New NPIV related metrics as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: Table only displayed if VIO server is configured with NPIV IO traffic of the Fiber Channel adapters in the VIO server for each WW name Without NPIV With NPIV For NPIV storage configurations VIOS presents a VFC Server Adapter, a Fiber Channel pass-through so that Client partition has a VFC Client Adapter and sees the LUN directly Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 7
Ethernet switch Assigned VLANs BCOEE 9.5.1 Support for Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) NPIV [Fibre Channel SAN feature from Power6, VIOS 2.1 FP 20.1]: allow VMs to access SAN devices with their own WW port name (requires configuring VIO partition controller and array LUN mapping and zoning for each LPAR) [IBM API only for AIX 6.1 TL8/AIX 7.1 TL2 or higher] VIO server partition Client partition A Client partition B Ent0 (phy) if1 SEA Virt 1 Virt 2 if1 Virt 3 if1 Virt 4 New SEA related metrics as displayed in BCO AIX PowerVM view: Top level Shared Ethernet Adapter List of all Shared Ethernet Adapter - analyze network traffic of the VIO server (all network traffic from the AIX host is routed through the VIO server) and detect potential bottlenecks that can affect the performance of all other LPARs in the frame PowerVM hypervisor LPARs can connect to external physical Ethernet switches (broadcast/multicast protcols like ARP, DHCP, BOOTP support) - VLANs can be bridged directly with physical network VLANs Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 8
Support for AIX HMC-only collection Support for AIX capacity visibility for both fully instrumented LPARs and HMC-only data collection HMC Same set of views for both HMC-only collection and LPAR instrumented: Allocated Capacity view/pages populated with metrics available in HMC-only collection Used Capacity view/pages are populated with metrics available in HMC-only and LPAR instrumented Frame 1 Frame2 Frame 3 LPAR1 Agent LPAR4 Agent LPAR7 Agent LPAR2 Agent LPAR5 LPAR8 LPAR3 Agent LPAR6 LPAR9 Full Instrumentation vs HMC-only Host/Frame CPU Configuration CPU Statistics Memory Configuration Memory Statistics Physical Cores, Unassigned Cores CPU cores configured for partitions Unused cores Pool Entitlement Configured Pool Entitlement Utilization CPU cores Allocated CPU Allocated % Total Memory Unassigned Memory Firmware Memory Memory Configured for partitions Memory Configured for instrumented partitions (relevant only for partial instrumentation) None Pool Processors Entitled Capacity CPU Utilization (Alloc) % Entitled Consumption (Alloc) cores Entitled Utilization (Alloc)% None None Partition Virtual Processors CPU Entitlement CPU Cores Allocated CPU Allocated % CPU Entitlement % Memory Configured None Copyright 6/9/2014 BMC Software, Inc 9
