YAMMER DEFINED AND ACCESS What is Yammer? Cloud, web based social networking tool used for communication and collaboration. Groups can be setup as private or public. All you need to setup your Yammer account is your @acd.ccac.edu email address. You cannot use personal accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. Accessing Yammer: Log into your CCAC academic email account. 1. Click on the Waffle Icon 2. Click on Yammer You will be asked to Who do you work with? 1. Simply type in the username of the person you want to connect with in the your coworker box. You can connect to other students and colleagues with a CCAC academic email account 2. In the drop down, be sure to choose @acd.ccac.edu for the domain 3. Click done when you are finished Page 2 of 22
YAMMER NAVIGATION When you log into Yammer, your home page is displayed with your activity feed which allows you to post and update your status The notifications area is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen The Home icon can be used to return back to the home page The Envelope icon will display your inbox messages The Bell icon will display your notifications The Search Box will conduct a site wide key word search Under the notifications area, you have the group options You will see a list of the groups of which you are a member The All Company group is the default group for everyone in the College with an academic email account that has joined in the CCAC Yammer network Create a group option will allow you to create a brand new group Discover more groups option will display groups that you may have access to join based on your interest Page 3 of 22
At the top of the activity feed, you can conduct a poll, give praise, or make an update On the right side of the screen, you will see options for Yammer desktop such as invite colleague, view the app directory, see suggested people and suggested groups In the upper right corner, you have another notifications icon which is not for Yammer but rather Office 365 To leave Yammer, click on the Waffle icon to get to a new app or click on your profile image in the upper right corner and choose sign out YAMMER YOUR PROFILE You can make changes to your default Yammer profile such as adding a picture, adding professional and educational information, and your notifications Only share information that is professional and that you want to have others view To access your profile: 1. Click on the settings gear located in the notifications area 2. Click on Edit Settings Page 4 of 22
Profile Options 1. Basics Your name, email, and upload an image by clicking Choose File 2. Info Personal information about yourself. Only enter what you want others to view 3. Contact Link other social networking sites to your Yammer. Only add what you want others to view and have linked to your Yammer account 4. Work & Education Enter current employment and or education information 5. Save Click Save when you are finished Page 5 of 22
YAMMER MANAGE YAMMER ALERTS Notifications After you setup your Yammer account, you will begin to receive notifications into your inbox if you have your desktop alert set You may want to manage these alerts within your CCAC inbox You can manage your notifications within Yammer Using the previous steps, access your profile 1. Choose Notifications at the top 2. You can look through the notifications list and choose how Yammer will notify you 3. Uncheck any notifications you no longer want or need 4. Once all of your notifications are set, remember to click on Save Windows Desktop Notifications You may want to be notified of any alerts coming through Yammer but you may not want to have Yammer open or looking at your inbox You can download the Windows Desktop Notification App Page 6 of 22
1. From the Home page, click on App Directory 2. Under All Apps, click on Yammer 3. Scroll down and locate Windows Desktop Notifier. Click on learn more and you will be taken to a separate page where you will download and install the app This will add the ability to receive alerts that are being sent to Outlook As soon as the installation is done, you may have a toast pop displaying any new notifications You can click on the toast pop to access the notifications You can also click on the settings gear to display the preferences and setup your alerts YAMMER MOBILE DEVICE You can utilize the Yammer Mobile app on your Android, iphone, ipad, and Windows devices 1. From the Home page, click on App Directory 2. Under All Apps, click on Yammer Page 7 of 22
3. Choose your device from the list and click on Learn More 4. Next, click on send email and you will enter your ccac.edu address 5. Open the email from Microsoft on your mobile device and click to download the app 6. You can also perform a search in your devices application store for Yammer to download and install Page 8 of 22
YAMMER FEEDS AND FOLLOWING Activity Feed As you access Yammer, you will notice in the activity feed, you have three views, Discovery, All, or Following All is the default view which is showing the public messages on your entire network Discovery will show new content from the network which has been chosen for you based on your profile and it makes suggestions for you Following displays all of those within the network that you are following Following For people you are not following, you should only see posts from them 1. You can follow people and topics by searching for people in the search box 2. Click on them and click on Follow If you wish to unfollow, perform the same steps as above Rest your mouse on Following and the option will change to Unfollow Page 9 of 22
If someone shows up in your feed, you can click on them and then click Follow You do not need to follow anyone that are in groups you are in because their posts will automatically show To follow topics: 1. Click on the settings gear 2. Click on apps 3. You can scroll down a little bit and click on topics Here you will see a list of topics that have been created 1. You can click on any topic 2. Topics get created when someone posts in the feed. Notice there is a topic area directly below the post 1. Anyone who creates or replies to a post can add a topic, click on the ellipsis 2. Click on Add Topics 3. Enter the Topic in the box 4. Click Add 5. The topic has been added You can view the new topic by clicking on the settings gear in the notifications area and clicking on Apps YAMMER MESSAGE MANAGEMENT Like, Reply, and Share You can like, reply, and share any post similar to that of Facebook 1. Simply click on the function you wish to perform: Like, Reply or Share 2. You can also respond to a post by clicking where it says Write a reply or click Reply and you can begin typing 3. You can click on the up arrow to upload a file from your computer Page 11 of 22
1. You can also add other people into the conversation by clicking on notify additional people 2. Once you are ready to post your reply, tap Enter on your keyboard or click Post 1. You can also click on Share and you have the option to post in a group 2. You can choose the group including public groups you may not be a member of and then you can say something to the group 3. Or you can send it as a private message Posting a Message To post a message to the activity feed: 1. Click in the update area and then you can begin typing 2. Notice you can add a GIF, a SharePoint file, a Yammer file, or you can upload a file from your computer 3. You can choose to post to the entire company or change it to a group or you can choose to add people to notify 4. Notice, you can also add a topic, you will not need to start with a # While posting, you can also mention a person in a post, similar to tagging in Facebook. 5. You will start with the @symbol and then begin typing the first name of the person you wish to mention. 6. You can then select them from the list. 7. When you are finished, click on Post to add it Page 12 of 22
Private Messages A private message is like a chat you can have with one or more people You can click on private messages in the lower left pane to view all of your Private Messages 1. To create a new private message, click on the plus sign 2. You can choose the participant(s) 3. Type your message 4. You can add a GIF or even upload a file from your computer 5. When you are finished click Send Message 1. After you have sent a private message, notice the participants name appears under private messages now 2. You can click back on their name to bring up your sent message and your conversation 3. You can continue your message here 4. Notice you have some options across the top for message handling 5. You can add more participants on the right side You can continue to chat or have a conversation by repeating these actions Page 13 of 22
YAMMER NOTIFICATION BREAK DOWN Notifications can go to one of two place, either your Inbox or your Notifications area These can be found to the right of the home button Notification Differences Inbox Most Important New message in a thread you follow Replies to you Mentions in a post Private Messages Announcements Notification Bell Less Important Notes and files you follow Mentions in a note Likes, RSVP, and invitations Votes on polls New follower YAMMER CONVERSATION OPTIONS Following\Stop Following a Conversation 1. Click on the More icon 2. Click on follow in inbox You will now see new replies to the followed conversation in your inbox. You can access these by clicking on the envelope icon in the notifications area You can also join the group if you want to be engaged in the conversation Replies that are already on the screen will not show however, any new replies will show You can also click on the more icon again and choose to stop following the conversation Page 14 of 22
Bookmarks You can also bookmark a message 1. Click on the more button 2. Choose bookmark You can use this for a post that you just want to remember and not necessarily take part in the conversation - very similar to saving something If you go back to your profile, (settings gear in notification area) you can click on Bookmarks and see these You can also add topics on a post 1. Click on the more button 2. Click add topics 3. Type in topic names You can then follow those topics YAMMER GROUPS Groups Groups allow you to organize conversations you are having with others If you are finished using the group, you should close them down Page 15 of 22
In the group you see who is a member of the group, conversations, files, notes, add a description at the top, pin important links, edit the information section about the group, add related groups and allow people to subscribe to the group You can post a message, like, reply, or share another group members message Remember, anyone who is part of CCAC may still see and search messages from this group The purpose of the group is to contain and organize a particular conversation Finding\Joining a Group Once you access yammer you are part of the all company group, which contains everyone at CCAC who has joined Yammer As with any other group, in all company you have the same options at the top If you can see a group, you can click on it to join it To find a group, you can conduct a search You can click on ACD.CCAC.EDU Groups and view groups available If you want to join a group, click on join and it will be added to your list of groups on the left Page 16 of 22
Praise You can use praise to communicate positively with a group member or someone you are following To perform this action: 1. Go to the Praise button 2. Choose a member 3. Enter your praise information 4. Choose who you wish to notify 5. Click Post Poll You can use polling to get a quick response to a question by allowing members to vote To perform this action Click on the group you wish to poll 1. Click on Poll 2. Next, type your question, enter the options, you can press tab to add more options 3. You can add topics if you want 4. You can attach a document or image 5. Click Post After a member votes, they will see the results of the poll Members can change their own vote it they want You can click reload to see the results Page 17 of 22
Add External Yammer Users 1. Click on Update 2. Type the email address of the external member you wish to add to the conversation 3. It lets you know you are adding people outside of the network 4. Click on Post 5. Notice there is now a globe indicating this conversation is available outside of the network The outside member will be able to reply via Yammer or the email You can also include outside participants in a private message You can also remove the external person as well You will see a link, remove participants Page 18 of 22
Creating a Group Search first to see if the group exists before you create 1. Click on create a group on the side bar on the left 2. Enter a group name 3. Enter a group description 4. Add group members (if external you can add via email address and remember you must use the email address that has a domain that is part of Yammer. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., will not work) 5. Choose public or private you can choose the list in Group Directory 6. Click create group Administration of a Group There needs to be at least one admin The group creator is automatically the group admin You can add other Admin by performing the following steps: 1. In the group you created, click on the settings gear 2. Click on Manage Members and Admins 3. Click on the Settings gear 4. Click on Make Admin 5. You can also remove these permissions if you wish Page 19 of 22
Customize the Group Page You can customize your header for your group: 1. Click on the settings gear 2. Group description 3. Choose your image 4. Choose a color 5. Group pattern Announcements Only admins can create an announcement It will trigger an email to the group members 1. Click on announcement 2. Add a title 3. Add the announcement 4. Format your text 5. Choose who to send this to 6. Add topics 7. Attach files or images 8. Click post Page 20 of 22
Pin To share files or links to everyone in your group, pin them Follow these steps to Pin materials: 1. Click on the Add link 2. Choose what type of media you wish to add 3. Once it s added, the link or document will now appear in the Pinned area Members can click here and obtain the media for review 4. To remove an item, just click on the grey X next to the media YAMMER INTEGRATION Embed in a Blackboard Course Faculty Use Only Embedding your Yammer group into Blackboard can be done by performing the following steps: Access the group you created and wish to embed 1. Click on the Embed This Feed in Your Site 2. Copy and paste the embed code Log into your Blackboard site 3. In any Content Area, choose Build Content 4. Click Item Page 21 of 22
5. In the GUI area, click the HTML button 6. Copy and paste your embed code here 7. Click update Click Submit to complete adding the Blackboard item Now all conversations that take place in Yammer or within your embedded Yammer will sync and display Page 22 of 22
