Backup the DocMinder Database Be sure to verify that you have a current backup of the DocMinder Database, if you do not have a recent backup then be sure to make one prior to the Upgrade of the DocMinder Server. Backup the DocMinder Web.Config File This file contains useful information that can be used if you aren t completely sure where the Database for DocMinder is located, it can also tell you the Username Associated with the Database and also has the encrypted version of the Password that you can use for the Database Update. This file is generally found in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot\docminder5 on the DocMinder Server, but can be in a different spot depending on how DocMinder was originally installed, you are basically looking for where the DocMinder Web Files are located. How to Use the Web.Config File If you don t know the name of the SQL Server, Database, Username or Password you can open the Web.Config in Notepad to find it, this information will be needed during the DocMinder Upgrade. Once it is opened it will look like this Date Source = SQL Server Name Initial Catalog = Database Name
User ID = SQL User Account Associated with the DocMinder Database Password = The Encrypted Version of the password for the User ID, This can be copied in and pasted for the password box in the Database Update Verify the URL for the DocMinder Site This URL can vary from install to install. The default name is generally http://servername/docminder5. But some sites might just have http://servername. It s important to know what it is so that it doesn t get changed when we do the upgrade. The easiest way to check the site name is to get into the DocMinder Client, Click File then About and a Box that looks like this will appear The Server Name is displayed in the middle. Uninstall Both the DocMinder Server and the DocMinder Monitoring Service All of the Settings and Reminder information is kept in the database, so there is no fear of losing data by uninstalling these. You can uninstall these the same way you would any other program in Windows. DocMinder Server Re-Installation Run the DocMinder Server.msi that came in the Zip File that you recently downloaded from the Word Tech File Site.
Click NEXT Select the Radio Button that says I Agree and click NEXT
Drop down the Site, if there is a DocMinder Option Select it, if not Keep the Default Web Site in. Earlier you needed to verify the Site URL, if your Site ended with a /docminder5 leave the docminder5 in the Virtual Directory box. If you did not have the /docminder5 then delete the contents of the virtual directory space. Drop down the Application Pool, if you have a DocMinder option then select that, if not then select DefaultAppPool Click NEXT
From the Select Action dropdown, choose Connect to Existing Database. This is where you can use the information in the Web.Config if you don t already know it. Enter the name of the SQL Database Server that hosts the DocMinder Database Enter the Database Name Enter the SQL User ID that the DocMinder Server uses to connect to the database. Enter the password for the user ID Once you have entered all the information in, click the EXECUTE Button After a little bit of time you should get a message in the text box to the right that says Successful Server and Database Update. After that Click on the CLOSE Button The Web Service installation is complete. Install The DocMinder Monitoring Service
Install on the same machine as the Web Service. Run the DocMinder Monitoring Service.msi file. Click NEXT Select the installation folder and click NEXT.
Click NEXT - FINISH. Upgrading the DocMinder Client Now that the Server is upgraded, the next time a user tries to launch the Client they will get a popup that looks like this If they have Local Admin Rights to their PC then they can click Ok and it will uninstall their old version and install the new and they will be good to go. If they do not have Local Admin Rights then they will need to click cancel and have an Admin Run the Application as an Administrator and then Click OK, this will also then uninstall the Old Version and then install the new.
Test the Application At this point the is done, but it is still important to test to make sure that DocMinders are still going to be sent out. To test this you can open the DocMinder Client, Click File, New, New DocMinder. Put yourself on the To Line, Put in a Subject Click the Notifications button at the bottom and put a checkmark in the box that says Send on, click ok. Then Click the Send button
You Should Receive the DocMinder within the next 1-2 minutes in your inbox, be sure to then Click the Hyperlink in the email and complete the Reminder. If you do not receive the DocMinder then there is a potential issue with DocMinder and you may need to contact support@wordtech.com for assistance in troubleshooting the issue.
