Importance Understanding the options in deploying VMware vsphere ESXi hosts gives the user the ability to select deployment options that best fit the enterprise. VMware vcenter Server Appliance enables organizations that do not implement the Windows operating system to use the enterprise features. 14-3

Lesson 1: Installing ESXi 14-5

Learner Objectives After this lesson, you should be able to do the following: Describe how to install ESXi interactively. Identify the basic requirements for a boot-from-san configuration. 14-6

ESXi Hardware Prerequisites Processor 64-bit x86 CPU: Requires at least two cores ESXi supports a broad range of x64 multicore processors Memory 2GB RAM minimum One or more Ethernet controllers: Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet controllers are supported. For best performance and security, use separate Ethernet controllers for the management network and the virtual machine networks. Disk storage: A SCSI adapter, Fibre Channel adapter, converged network adapter, iscsi adapter, or internal RAID controller A SCSI disk, Fibre Channel logical unit number (LUN), iscsi disk, or RAID LUN with unpartitioned space: SATA, SCSI, or Serial Attached SCSI 14-7

Installing ESXi You must have the ESXi 5.1 ISO file on CD, DVD, or USB flash drive media. Boot from the media to start the ESXi installer. Make sure that you select a disk that is not formatted with VMware vsphere VMFS. Choose a volume that has not been formatted with VMFS. 14-9

Booting from SAN ESXi can be booted from SAN: Supported for Fibre Channel SAN Supported for iscsi and Fibre Channel over SAN for certain qualified storage adapters SAN connections must be made through a switched topology unless the array is certified for direct-connect. The ESXi host must have exclusive access to its own boot LUN. Use different LUNs for VMFS datastores and boot partitions. ESXi boot LUN 14-10

vcenter Inventory Services Stores vcenter Server application and inventory data: Enables you to search and access inventory objects across linked vcenter Servers Required with vcenter Server 5.1: Supports login by Single Sign On Used by the vsphere Web Client. Can be deployed on the same host or separate host to vcenter Server. Part of vsphere Simple Install or installed as a separate component. Inventory Service is included with the vcenter Server Appliance. 14-18

vcenter Server Hardware and Software Requirements Hardware requirements (physical or virtual machine): Number of CPUs Two 64-bit CPUs or one 64-bit dual-core processor Processor 2.0GHz or higher Intel or AMD processor* Memory 4GB RAM minimum* Disk storage 4GB minimum* Networking Gigabit connection recommended * Higher if database, SSO, and Inventory Services runs on the same machine Software requirements: 64-bit operating system is required. See vsphere Compatibility Matrixes. 14-19

vcenter Database Requirements Each vcenter Server instance must have a connection to a database to organize all the configuration data. Supported databases: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP3 (required): SP4 recommended Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Oracle 10g R2 and 11g IBM DB2 9.5 and 9.7 Default database Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express: Included with vcenter Server Used for product evaluations and demonstrations Also used for small deployments (up to five hosts and 50 virtual machines) 14-20

Considerations for Calculating the Database Size Use the vcenter Server Database Sizing Calculator: For Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Or use the what-if calculator built in to vcenter Server. 14-21

Before Installing vcenter Server Before beginning the vcenter Server installation, make sure that the following prerequisites are met: Ensure that vcenter Server hardware and software requirements are met. Ensure that the vcenter Server system belongs to a domain rather than a workgroup. Create a vcenter Server database, unless you are using the default database. Obtain and assign a static IP address and a host name to the vcenter Server system. 14-22

Installing vcenter Server and Its Components Use the VMware vcenter Installer to install vcenter Server and its components. Install vcenter Server. Install vsphere Update Manager Install vsphere Client. 14-23

Standalone Instance or Linked Mode Group 14-24

vcenter Server Installation Wizard The vcenter Server Installation wizard asks for the following data. Parameter User name and organization License key Database information SYSTEM account information Destination folder Standalone or join a Linked Mode group Ports JVM memory Ephemeral port configuration Description User identification Evaluation or valid license key Default database or remote database connection information User for running the vcenter Server service Software location Standalone instance or enable two or more vcenter Server inventories to be visible from the vsphere Client. Ports used for communicating with client interfaces and managed hosts Java Virtual Machine memory configuration for the vcenter Server Web service Select if vcenter Server will manage hosts that power on more than 2,000 virtual machines simultaneously. 14-25

vcenter Server Services Instead of using the vcenter Server Appliance, you can install vcenter Server on a Windows system. After vcenter Server is installed, a number of services start on reboot and can be managed from Windows Control Panel (Administrative Tools > Services). 14-26

vcenter Server Appliance Features The vcenter Server Appliance includes: A prepackaged 64-bit application running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 An embedded database available for: Evaluating the appliance Running no more than five hosts and 50 virtual machines Support for an external Oracle database when running in an enterprise A Web-based interface for vcenter Server Appliance configuration Support for the vsphere Web Client application Support for centralized authentication 14-31

vcenter Server Appliance Benefits The benefits of using the vcenter Server Appliance include: Simplified deployment and configuration: Import appliance to an ESXi host. Configure the network and time-zone settings. Use the Web interface to configure the appliance. Lower total cost of ownership through elimination of the Windows operating system dependency and associated licensing costs No change to user experience when connecting to vcenter Server with the vsphere Client 14-32

vcenter Server Appliance Requirements vcenter Server Appliance hardware Disk space needed on the host machine vcenter Server Appliance memory allocation Requirements Minimum = 7GB Maximum = 82GB For 1 10 ESXi hosts or 1 100 virtual machines, allocate 4GB. For 10 100 ESXi hosts or 100-1,000 virtual machines, allocate 8GB. For 100 400 ESXi hosts or 1,000 4,000 virtual machines, allocate 16GB. For more than ESXi 400 hosts or 4,000 virtual machines, allocate 24GB. Processor Two virtual CPUs (default) 14-33

Importing the vcenter Server Appliance To import the appliance, select File > Deploy OVF Template. The appliance is imported to an ESXi host that is part of the virtual infrastructure. 14-34

Starting the vcenter Server Appliance After the appliance boots, the network settings and time zone must be configured. Network settings can be configured from the console or through the Web interface. 14-35

Configuring the vcenter Server Appliance Network 1. Access the appliance console. 2. Select Configure Network and enter the network settings. 3. Reboot the appliance after the network is configured. 14-36

Configuring the vcenter Server Appliance Time Zone 1. Access the appliance console. 2. Select Set Timezone and set the time zone to the appropriate location. 14-37

Connecting to the Web Interface Open a Web browser and type: https://[appliance_name IP_address]:5480 Log in and configure the appliance. 14-38

Configuring the vcenter Server Appliance Accept the end-user license agreement and configure the database. 1. Click Accept EULA to accept the end-user license agreement (EULA), which is displayed on first login. 2. Select embedded or Oracle for database type. 3. Enter connection information if required. 4. Click Test Settings or Save Settings. 14-39

Managing vcenter Server Appliance Services Turn on the vcenter Server service and manage additional vcenter Server services. 1. Click Start vcenter. 2. Click the Summary tab. 3. Start and stop services: a. Syslog collector b. Dump collector c. Auto Deploy d. vsphere Web Client 14-40

Additional vcenter Server Appliance Configuration Options Many other configuration options are beyond the scope of this discussion. The other tabs offer various configuration options, including the following: Configure HTTP/HTTPS ports Change appliance password Reboot or shut down the appliance Configure logging and core file storage Modify IP address, DNS, and host name 14-41

Key Points vcenter Linked Mode enables a single vsphere Client to view and manage the inventories of multiple vcenter Server systems. ESXi installation requires little configuration during installation. vcenter Server installed on Windows operating systems can run on physical machines or virtual machines. The vcenter Server Appliance provides the user with a Linux-based solution for managing the virtual infrastructure. Image Builder enables the administrator to create customized ESXi boot images. Auto Deploy is a new method for deploying ESXi hosts, where the ESXi host s state and configuration run entirely in memory. Questions? 14-43
