5 Deploying a Filer on a VMware vsphere Virtual Machine You can deploy the Panzura Storage Filer (filer) on a VMware vsphere virtual machine. This chapter also includes best practices for using VMware vmotion for flexibility and high availability in the VMware environment. vsphere Sizing Guidelines Deploy a Filer in vsphere Best Practices for Flexibility and High Availability in the VMware Environment vsphere Sizing Guidelines The following table gives sizing guidelines for filer deployment on VMware vsphere. The SSD and flash storage must be enterprise grade and stable across power failures. Battery/Super Cap backed or equivalent write caches are required. Panzura instances, acting as caches, will use all available storage for the best performance. So SSDs must be capable of maintaining high write performance even at 80%+ capacity. Table 7 Sizing Guidelines for filer deployment on VMware vsphere Small 1 Gbps 10 CPU x 2.2Ghz+ 32 GB Meta in SSD*, Data in HDD or SSD Medium 5 Gbps 20 CPU x 2.2Ghz+ 128 GB Meta in SSD*, Data in SSD. If you do not clearly see the login prompt after bootup is complete, press Enter to display the login prompt. This step may be required whenever the VM is rebooted. To continue with filer setup and operations, see the Panzura Freedom Filer Administration Guide. Best Practices for Flexibility and High Availability in the VMware Environment VMware provides support for flexibility and high availability of the filer storage and hosts. vmotion VMware vmotion allows you to migrate filer VMs and storage within the VMware environment. You can use vmotion to migrate the host on which the filer is running, migrate the storage associated with a filer, or migrate both the host and storage. Panzura Freedom Filer Installation Guide 34

Chapter 5 Deploying a Filer on a VMware vsphere Virtual Machine The following figure shows a vmotion configuration, with two filers and shared storage. The following are best practices when configuring vmotion in vsphere: Configure all metadata to be on SSD. Configure cache data to be on HDD or SSD. Configure metadata and cache on separate storage media. Configure the migration so that the metadata and cache migrate to compatible media. HA in vsphere VMware provides HA capabilities for vsphere hosts. If the vsphere host on which the filer is running goes down, the vsphere HA process will cause a takeover of that host by another host. The takeover is automatic, without any reconfiguration required; however, there will be a service interruption while the takeover is completed. HA in Panzura Use the HA capabilities in Panzura for redundancy if there is an issue with a filer running on a VMware host. Panzura HA allows takeover by another VM filer. Deploy the active and standby filers on different VMware hosts to reduce the likelihood that a host failure will affect the HA takeover. Panzura Freedom Filer Installation Guide 35
