Out-of-Box Demonstration for S1/S3/S5 Target Boards Introduction Application Note This document describes the Renesas Synergy Platform based on the Out-of-Box (OoB) sample application, on Renesas Synergy Target Boards (TB). This document also describes the OoB sample application and its implementation details using the Renesas Synergy Software Package (SSP). Additionally, this document describes how to import the project, so that you can recreate this application with the Synergy e 2 studio, Integrated Solutions Development Environment (ISDE). Required Resources To build and run the application, you need the following: System Embedded Hardware PC At least 8 GB of RAM At least 2 GB of free hard disk space One USB 2.0 (or later) port Target Board Kit (one of the following) TB-S1JA (v1.2 or later), TB-S3A1 (v1.0 or later), TB-S3A3 (v1.0 or later), TB-S3A6 (v1.0 or later), TB-S5D3 (v1.0 or later), TB-S5D5 (v1.0 or later) USB Cable (micro male on one end, and USB Type A male on other end). Prerequisites and Intended Audience This application note assumes that you have installed all the required tools, and you have some experience with e 2 studio ISDE, IAR Embedded Workbench for Synergy and the Synergy Software Package (SSP). The intended audience are users who want to develop applications with the S1, S3, and S5 Synergy MCU Groups. 1. Overview The application used in this tutorial is Blinky, which is the first program run in the Renesas Synergy Platform using e 2 studio ISDE workbench and the SSP. By running this application, you will become familiar with Synergy MCUs and the associated e 2 studio ISDE or IAR Embedded Workbench for Renesas Synergy development toolchain. 1.1 Application Software Architecture Figure 1 shows the software components of the Blinky Application. Here, the Blinky thread toggles the LED by calling the HAL driver. 2. Introduction to the OoB Application 2.1 Powering up the Board To connect to the board: Figure 1 Blinky Application Software Architecture 1. Connect the Micro USB end of the supplied USB cable to the Renesas Synergy Target Board J11 connector (DEBUG_USB). Note: The board contains a SEGGER J-Link On-board (OB). The J-Link provides full debug and programming capabilities for the Renesas Synergy Target Board boards. 2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on your workstation. LED2 turns green, indicating a good connection. 2.2 Running the OoB Application 1. When the board powers up, you will see the USER LED blinking. This is the default OoB Application for target boards when shipped from manufacturing. 3. Importing, Building, and Running the Application Project You can refer to the SSP Import Guide (r11an0023eu0120-synergy-ssp-import-guide.pdf) for instructions on importing the bundled application projects into e 2 studio ISDE or IAR EW to build and run the project. Note: You need to select the OoB_Demo_TBxxx Debug option from the GDB Hardware Debugging Configuration window based on the kit for debugging. R12AN0070EU0104 Rev.1.04 Page 3 of 9

Recreating, Generating, and Building an OoB Demonstration Application Project Procedures to recreate, generate, and build the Out-of-Box Demonstration Application Project using the e 2 studio ISDE or Synergy SSC for IAR EW are explained in the following sections. 4.1 Recreating the OoB Application Project 1. In e 2 studio, ISDE, click File > New > Synergy C/C++ Project. 2. For IAR EW for Synergy, click Renesas Synergy > New Synergy Project. Select the name as described in the figure that follows and select the license file and SSC version. 3. Choose Renesas Synergy C Executable Project and click Next as shown in the following Figure 2. 4. Assign a name to use for this tutorial, for example, Blinky. 5. Identify the license file if the license window is empty. You can locate the license file in your ISDE base directory: ISDE\internal\projectgen\arm\Licenses\SSP_License_Example_EvalLicense_<rev>.xml. For TB-S1JA Boards using e 2 studio, in order to build the project, the user needs to install IAR compiler. This can be installed as a plugin as referenced by the document in the link here (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/doc/products/renesas-synergy/apn/r11an0272eu0103-synergy-e2studiocompiler-install.pdf). Follow the instructions and select the IAR Toolchain for ARM (8.x), as shown in the following graphic. Figure 3 e 2 studio IAR Compiler Selection Window R12AN0070EU0104 Rev.1.04 Page 5 of 9

7. Select the SSP version and the name of your board from the Device Selection drop-down list. Click Next. For the TB-S3A6 target board, select S3A6 TB as shown in the following figure. For any other, choose the target board applicable. 8. Select Blinky with ThreadX project template and click Finish. The project files are generated with the configuration options you selected. Your new project is now created, configured, and ready to build. 4.3 Building the Project 1. Build the application project by clicking the hammer icon as shown in the following figure: 4.4 Downloading and Running the Application 1. After the Synergy MCU Target Board is powered up, load this application project using the debugger. When the application is loaded, click the run command to run the application. The user LED starts blinking continuously. This verifies that the recreated Blinky application is working. 5. Next Steps 1.
