Applied ICT Skills MS Windows Lesson 1 - How to install an operating system into computer? Windows 7 is perhaps the best Microsoft operating system and is very easy to install compared to other windows. Before starting the installation we should make sure that the computer meets all the Hardware requirements for installing Windows 7. Minimum Hardware requirements: 1 GHz 32 bit processor 1GB RAM for good performance Graphics adapter that supports Direct x 9 graphics Minimum 512 Mb of Graphics memory 20 GB free Hard disk space Different Editions in Windows 7: Windows 7 starter Home basic Home premium Professional Enterprise Ultimate The steps to install Windows 7 operating system are as follows: Before you install the operating system you have two options 1. Custom installation- it is when you want new installation 2. Upgrading- is when you use existing installed OS but repair it and over write i. Custom installation using CD disk 1. Insert the Windows Installation Disk into the Computer Optical Drive. 2. Restart the Computer, and Press f9 (For HP), f12 (for Toshiba). 3. Select CD to boot and press enter.

4. The computer will ask you to Press any key to boot from CD/DVD. 5. Press any key on your keyboard and it will start loading the operating system from the CD. 6. After loading windows 7 successfully, it opens an install window. 7. Enter the Language time & currency format and keyboard or input method. 8. Click Next. 9. The Install windows 7 screen will appear. 10. Click Install now. 11. Setup will start and you will see a message on the screen Set up is starting 12. Now it will show the License agreement screen. Check the I accept the License terms and click Next. 13. The Install windows wizard will appear. 14. Select Custom (advanced) option. The screen will prompt you to select the location to install windows. 15. Click drive you want to install the new windows, and then click Next. 16. Windows will start the installation. 17. Now the installation status screen appears. You will have to wait for the following tasks to get complete. Copying Windows Expanding Windows files Installing features Installing updates Completing Installation 18. The computer will restart several times during this process so do not worry. 19. After successful installation of Windows 7 it will ask you to specify the computer name. 20. It will also ask you enter a User account and Password. 21. Enter the password in the respective field and also the password hint, click Next. 22. Now a window to set time on your computer will be displayed. Set the correct Time Zone, date and click Next option.

23. The Computer network location option will be displayed if your computer is already connected to a network. Select Network type and click next. 24. Windows will now finalize the setup and start to prepare your Windows 7 Desktop. Lesson 2 - Creating computer Hard disk partitions 1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button, 2. Click Control Panel and then Administrative Tools, and then doubleclicking Computer Management. 3. In the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management. 4. Right-click on and select the partition you want to shrink 5. Select Shrink Volume 6. Windows will take a moment to query the volume for available shrink space. 7. Type the size of the volume you want to create in megabytes (MB) or accept the maximum default size and Click shrink After finishing shrinking process a new unallocated partition is being created, to process do this 8. Right-click an unallocated region on your hard disk, and then click New Simple Volume. 9. In the New Simple Volume Wizard, click Next. 10. Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition, and then click Next. 11. In the Format Partition dialog box, do one of the following: a. If you don't want to format the volume right now, click Do not format this volume, and then click Next. b. To format the volume with the default settings, click Next. 12. Review your choices, and then click Finish.

NB: you can quickly access the disk management console by type the following command at the command prompt: diskmgmt.msc and hit enter Deleting a hard Disk partition: 1. First go to disk management console if you are not already in 2. Right click the partition you want to delete and select delete volume 3. A warning message appears Deleting this volume will erase all data on it, do you want to continue click yes. 4. The partition will become unallocated. And you make this partition extended into other partitions. Extending a Hard Disk Partition: Right click the drive that you want to extend Select extend volume Extend volume wizard appears click next Select disks and amount to extend and then click next Click finish Format drives (disks) 1. Open Windows Explorer, click the "Computer" section in the sidebar, and find your drive. 2. Right-click on the drive and choose "Format." 3. Under "File System," choose the file system you want to use. See the above section for more details on which one to pick. 4. Give your drive a name under "Volume Label," and check the "Quick Format" box. 5. Click "Start" to format the drive. You'll get a notification when it's done (it should only take a few seconds).

6. NB: if you want to format external drives plug the drive into the computer and do the above steps to format it WARNING: if you format the any drive on your computer such as hard disk, flash disk etc., the contents on it will be deleted from the computer permanently and never recovered unless you use specialized recovery software to recover and undo the deleted files Lesson 3 - Setting User Accounts With Windows 7, everyone who uses your computer can have their own user account. This allows each person to have his or her own settings. Before you start making new user accounts, it's important to understand the two types of accounts: Standard: Standard accounts are the basic accounts you use for normal, everyday tasks. As a Standard user, you can do just about anything you would need to do, such as running software or personalizing your desktop. Also, Parental Controls can be placed on Standard accounts. Administrator: Administrator accounts are special accounts that are used for making certain changes to system settings or managing other people's accounts. They have full access to every setting on the computer. Every computer will have at least one Administrator account. How to create new user accounts 1. Go to the Control Panel from the Start Menu. 2. Click Add or remove user accounts. 3. The Manage Accounts pane will appear. You will see all of the user accounts here, and you can add more accounts or manage existing ones.

4. From the Manage Accounts pane, click Create a new account. 5. Type an account name. 6. Select Standard user or Administrator. 7. Click Create Account. How to create a password for an existing account: 1. Go to the Control Panel from the Start Menu. 2. Click Add or remove user accounts.

3. From the Manage Accounts pane, select the account name you want to create a password for. 4. Click Create a password.

5. Type a password in the New password field, and retype it in the Confirm new password field. 6. If you want, you can type a password hint to help you remember your password. 7. Click Create password. 8. To go back to the Manage Accounts pane, click Manage another account. NB: Account passwords are case sensitive, which means capital and lowercase letters are treated as different characters. For example, abc1 is not the same as abc1. How to change your account picture: You can also change the picture for any account. This picture appears next to the account name and helps you easily identify the account. 1. From the Manage Accounts pane, click the account name or picture. 2. Click Change the picture.

3. Select a picture, or click Browse for more pictures to select one of your ownpictures. 4. Click Change Picture. Lesson 4 - How to Crack windows 7 password without Software 1. Restart the computer, when it restarts and you see the starting Windows with the logo, purposely shut down the computer and then start it again. 2. Once you start you ll see lunch startup repair (recommended) select it and press enter. This will launch the startup repair.

3. While in the Startup Repair a popup will come up asking if you would like to restore your computer using System Restore, there select cancel. 4. Continue with the Startup Repair. This window takes about 10 to 15 Minutes till the next window appear

5. If you are lucky you ll get the Startup Repair popup window. Here click on the dropdown right beside view problem details 6. Scroll all the way down to the last link. Click on the last link to open a text file 7. On the text file click on file on the top left corner to select open from the drop-down menu. 8. Click on Computer icon from the left pane and select local disk from the right pane. The drive letters have changed around so make sure to locate local disk 9. Then select windows folder and then System32folder

10. Here Change the files of type select to All Files, 11. Then look for Sethcfileand right-click on it and then copy it 12. Go to an empty space and paste it 13. Then come back to the Sethc file and delete it 14. Then look for CMD file and then rename it to Sethc. 15. Close all remaining windows and click on Finish. The computer will turn off. Re-Start the computer you still can t log-in but now we made some modification, we changed the sticky keys to command prompt. 16. Press five times the shift key and the command prompt will appear, here typenet user to show all users. 17. Here I only have one user named Admin, but your computer may be different and have many user accounts, just pick up the user account you want to reset its password

18. So now type net user username space password (Ex: net user Admin 123) and press enter 19. 19. Now the user password has been changed to the password you just specified, close the command prompt and logon the computer with this password. NB: You can also type like this net user username space* and press enter Confirm it by pressing enter again. But this will leave the password blank Lesson 5 - Disable or Enable USB Flash Disk: 1. Go to Start > Run, type regedit and press enter to open the registry editor 2. Navigate to the following key 3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet1 \Services\USBSTOR 4. In the right pane, select Start and change the value to 3. (The value 4 will disable USB Storage). Click OK. This will re-enable USB Ports and allow you to use USB or Pen drives. Lesson 6 - How to Enable/Disable Control Panel 1. Go to start menu 2. Then types gpedit.msc) and hit enter 3. Local Group policy editor appears

Then choose enable to and click Apply ok NB: if you want to re-enable the control panel repeat the above steps and choose the option not configured and click Apply ok
