NQF Ref 1547 Version 2 Page 2 of 7 National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) Level 2 Credits 51-55 Purpose This qualification is designed for people who already have some experience in the wool harvesting industry and who wish to develop shearing skills. The compulsory section recognises core skills required for wool harvesting industry employees. Qualification holders will have knowledge of hydration, nutrition, and sleep for physical well-being, as well as of care and timeliness, and will be able to protect their own health and safety. The elective sets recognise the skills required of junior shearers who machine shear either crossbred or fine wool sheep, or who blade shear sheep under supervision. These skills include preparing and sharpening shearing blades under supervision, grinding shearing combs and cutters, and maintaining and rectifying faults in combs. Holders may also have knowledge of a kit of shearing gear. It is recommended that before embarking on this qualification, candidates have either completed the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with the Learner Shearer Strand [Ref: 1546] or have the appropriate skills and knowledge required in order to cope with the demands of this qualification. This qualification is part of a series developed for the wool harvesting sector. A qualification pathways diagram can be found at the end of this document. Replacement Information This qualification, and the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with strands in Learner Shearer, and Learner Wool Handler [Ref: 1546], replaced the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Level 2) with strands in Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool, Machine Shearing Fine Wool, Blade Shearing, and Wool Handling [Ref: 1050]. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in section 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Rules and Procedures publications available at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/acrp/index.html. Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). There are significant differences between the expiring qualification and its replacement qualifications. The differences include: The expiring qualification has been split into two qualifications, with qualification [Ref: 1546] designed for an entry level person who requires a broad range of skills, and qualification [Ref: 1547] designed for a junior shearer. Standards 3503 and 13350 have not been included in either of the new qualifications.
NQF Ref 1547 Version 2 Page 5 of 7 Standards 19145, 4249, and 497 from the compulsory section have all been added to the compulsory section of [Ref: 1547]. The Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool Strand has been split with standards 15041, 20101 and 20113 moved to elective set A in qualification [Ref: 1547]. The Machine Shearing Fine Wool Strand has been split with standards 15041, 20102 and 20113 moved to elective set B in qualification [Ref: 1547]. Standards 20108 and 20109, which make up the Blade Shearing Strand, have been moved to elective set C in qualification [Ref: 1547]. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. Candidates enrolled in courses or training leading to the replaced qualification should complete that one or transfer their results to either one of the new qualifications depending on their current level of shearing competency. The start date for programmes or courses for the new qualification is at the time of registration. The last date for entry to programmes or courses for the replaced qualification is December 2010. The last date for assessments to take place for the replaced qualification is December 2012.
