Field PC2 Windows OS Update Guide 1 INTRODUCTION This document provides step-by-step instructions for users to update the Window operating system (OS) on the RST Ultra-Rugged Field PC2. FIGURE 1-1 THE FIELD PC2 NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO BACK UP THE DATA FROM THE FIELD PC2 AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID DATA LOSS. ELM0092 A RST Instruments Ltd. Page 1
2 PROCEDURE The following steps describe the procedure to upgrade the Windows OS on the Field PC 2. 2.1 DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER Windows Mobile Device Center offers device management and data synchronization between a Windows Mobile-based device (Field PC 2 ) and a computer. 1. On a laptop or PC, visit: https://support.microsoft.com/enca/help/931937/description-of-windows-mobile-device-center 2. Scroll down to Download Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1. 3. 5. The software should download automatically. 6. Open the newly-downloaded file. The software will install automatically. 7. Once the software is installed, the user can access the File Management folder for the Field PC 2. The user can also access the Pictures, Music and Video folder and Mobile Device Settings. 2.2 ACCESSING FILES ON THE FIELD PC 2 1. Once the Windows Mobile Device Center is installed, connect the Field PC 2 to the laptop or PC via USB. The status of the connection can be seen in the bottom left corner of the Windows Mobile Device Center (Figure 2-3). On the Windows Mobile Device Center, select File Management to access files on the Field PC 2. ELM0092 A RST Instruments Ltd. Page 3
FIGURE 2-4 WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER SELECTING FILE MANAGEMENT 2.3 BACKING UP FILES Before updating the OS, it is very important to backup all files on the Field PC 2. Updating the OS will erase all programs and files from the Field PC 2. CAUTION: ONCE THE OS HAS BEEN UPDATES, ANY FILES THAT WERE NOT BACKED UP ONTO THE PC OR LAPTOP WILL BE PERMANENTLY LOST. 2.4 RESTORING DEFAULT FACTORY SETTINGS 1. Connect the Field PC 2 to the power adaptor and a power source. CAUTION: THE FIELD PC 2 MUST BE CONNECTED TO A POWER SOURCE IN ORDER FOR THE UPGRADE TO PROCEED. 2. Double check that the Field PC 2 is still connected to the laptop or PC with a USB cable. Wait for the Mobile Device Center to connect to the device. If it does not start automatically, open the program from your desktop. 3. Hold the power button down until the blue screen appears (Figure 2-5). The unit will restart a few times, but continue to hold the power button down until you see the blue screen. ELM0092 A RST Instruments Ltd. Page 4

5. If prompted, click OK on the Date/Time setting dialog. Follow instructions on screen. Wait for the process to finish. 6. On the laptop or PC, download the following file: http://www.rstinstruments.com/customersupport/downloads/fieldpc/archer-2- OS-Current-English.zip 7. Once download is complete, unzip the downloaded file. 8. Run Archer-2-OS-XXX-English.exe NOTE: XXX DENOTES THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE. 9. 10. Wait for the OS to upgrade and the Field PC 2 to restart. Set the correct time and date when the Date/Time dialog appears. Click OK and wait for the process to finish. 11. A message will appear asking the user to verify the correct OS version has been installed. Click the green check mark to continue (Figure 2-9). 12. The device will reboot once more. 3. Verify that the OS Build Version matches the version of the OS upgrade file (the XXX in Archer-2-OS-XXX-English.exe). FIGURE 2-12 VERIFYING THE OS BUILD VERSION 4. If the build version is accurate, install data from the backup. 5. Set the correct time and time zone. 6. Download the current RST software installation files from the RST Instruments website: https://www.rstinstruments.com/software.html CAUTION: DO NOT UNZIP CAB FILES. 7. Copy the installation cab files to the My Documents folder on the Field PC 2. 8. Run the installation cab files using File Explorer on the Field PC 2. 9.
