802.11n Interoperability & Coexistance Built-in mechanism to deal with interoperability and coexistance High Throughput (HT) protected mode assumes that there are no nearby legacy devices using the same frequency band, and allows for the highest throughput In HT protected mode, 802.11n devices can send legacy CTS-to-self or RTS/CTS frames to announce intent to transmit to avoid collisions with nearby 802.11a/g devices, reducing throughput significantly In non-ht protected mode, 802.11n AP sends all frames using old 802.11a/g format on 20MHz channels, and therefore doesn t deliver better performance than 802.11a/g 20/40MHz channels can coexist by sending HT Information and Capabilities to indicate channel width among other things Networks with mixed 802.11n and 802.11a/g devices will not experience improved throughput over 802.11a/g-only networks
