What exactly is devolo Home Control? Home Control (also known as home automation) refers to the specific control of electrically operated indoor household devices. The Home Control system by devolo uses the Z-Wave wireless standard. The Home Control Central Unit is the heart of the devolo Home Control system. It is equipped with a user interface, called the Home Control portal, which is used to coordinate all of your Home Control devices. Access to the Home Control portal is very easy both from the Home Control App and/or at www.mydevolo.com in a browser. What exactly is dlan? dlan is an intelligent, secure technology that lets you set up a home network easily, quickly and economically via your household electrical wiring, without the need for complex and expensive dedicated cabling. The dlan (direct Local Area Network) uses the household power grid to transfer data between computers and other network components equipped with suitable adapters. As a result, any electrical socket can be used as a network access point. The data is modulated prior to transfer and sent as a signal via household power lines. State-of-the-art technology ensures that the power and data networks do not interfere with one another. Networking via dlan is fast and secure. The data is encrypted using a key to prevent interception by third parties. 10

11 What exactly is Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus? Z-Wave is an internationally recognised wireless standard that has been developed by Sigma Designs and the Z-Wave Alliance for home automation and adjacent outdoor areas and has been licensed for smart home applications worldwide. This wireless communication is optimised for low energy consumption and high communication security. All available devices are certified on the basis of their interoperability within the Z-Wave standard. This makes it possible to operate devices from different manufacturers and scopes of application in one shared wireless network. Installations such as light switches, electronic door closers, heating thermostats, blind controls and other devices such as sensors, wall switches and smoke detectors can be controlled via smartphones, tablets and/or Internet applications. Z-Wave devices can be powered by batteries or supplied from the mains. All devices connected to the mains act as routers for all the other devices. If a signal cannot be sent directly to a receiver due to physical obstructions, the signal is automatically rerouted over other nodes. Within buildings, individual devices can communicate with each other over a distance of up to 25 metres, increasing to 100 metres outdoors. One advantage is the 868 MHz radio waves, which are able to pass through walls with relative ease. Z-Wave Plus is an extension of the Z-Wave standard, which includes all current further developments of the technology. Depending on the product, this may involve a longer battery service life, faster operation, larger coverage of the range and/or easier device installation. Z-Wave Plus devices are compatible with devices of the Z-Wave generation You can find more information about Z-Wave on the website for the Z-Wave Alliance: www.z-wavealliance.org

The Home Control Central Unit The Home Control Central Unit is the heart of the devolo Home Control system. It is equipped with a user interface, called the Home Control portal, which is used to coordinate all of your Home Control devices. Access to the Home Control portal is very easy both from the Home Control app and/or at www.mydevolo.com in a browser. While the Home Control app lets you operate and control your Home Control devices easily and conveniently, access to the Home Control portal in your browser at www.mydevolo.com provides you with the complete range of Home Control functions and benefits. You can use this to carry out initial and administrative actions such as initial registration of the Home Control Central Unit or teaching in (including) and configuring Home Control devices. The Home Control Central Unit provides a button for dlan encryption (home icon), a Home Control button (check mark), a network (LAN) and a USB connection. The USB connection is provided for future applications and is not active at this time. 14

Basic guidelines for setting up a Home Control network When planning your Home Control network, consider the optimal placement of all devices with regard to the wireless range so as to best avoid weak signals and interference sources. Drawing up a sketch may help you to determine the desired locations of all your devices. Weak signals due to attenuation can result from furniture, plants and especially metal objects which are located between the devices. Possible sources of interference include electrical devices such as a microwave or computer. In such instances, keep your device at least around 50 cm (19 in) away from the source. Install the Home Control devices in sequence as described with increasing distance to the Home Control Central Unit. 16

17 Connecting the Home Control Central Unit CAUTION! Damage to the device caused by ambient conditions Only use device indoors in dry conditions There are two ways to connect the Home Control Central Unit to the internet: Connecting the Home Control Central Unit directly to the Internet router Taking the above factors into consideration, plug the Home Control Central Unit into a wall outlet that is located centrally in your house or flat. To connect the Home Control Central Unit to the LAN directly at your Internet router, plug the included network cable into both devices. CAUTION! Tripping hazard Lay the network cable in a barrier-free manner and ensure that the electrical socket and the connected network devices are easily accessible As soon as you are connected to your dlan or LAN network, the Home Control button (check mark) on the device illuminates white. If the Home Control button flashes red, there is no connection to the Home Control Central Unit.

18 Connecting the Home Control Central Unit to the internet router using an existing dlan network Taking the above factors into consideration, plug the Home Control Central Unit into a wall outlet that is located centrally in your house or flat. To connect the Home Control Central Unit to the Internet router via your existing dlan network, first press the home or encryption button (for 1 second) on an existing dlan adapter (e.g. the one on the Internet router) in your network, and then within 2 minutes press the dlan encryption button with the home icon (for 1 second) on the Home Control Central Unit. As soon as you are connected to your dlan or LAN network, the Home Control button (check mark) on the device illuminates white. If the Home Control button flashes red, there is no connection to the Home Control Central Unit. For the Home Control Central Unit to be recognised automatically in the Home Control portal when first installed, both the Home Control Central Unit and the device with which you are accessing it must be connected through the same LAN. If instead you use separate Internet connections, you have to enter the serial number of the Home Control Central Unit manually. The serial number (e.g. S/N: 12312312312312) of the Home Control Central Unit is located on the title page of the installation guide and on the label on the rear of the unit's housing. If you have to enter the serial number, you should do so when you add the Home Control Central Unit in the portal, as described under instruction.

19 Registering the Home Control Central Unit for the first time To register the Home Control Central Unit for the first time, use your PC or laptop. In your browser, go to www.mydevolo.com. Select Create an account to register a new account. After you have confirmed your data by clicking Apply, you will receive a registration message at the e- mail address you indicated while creating your account. Click the link Finish registration, after which you will receive an activation confirmation. Click the my devolo link to return to the login page, where you can now use your existing user name and password to log in. On the dashboard page, select Home Control. There, add your Home Control Central Unit by clicking the plus button. Confirm your input with Apply and follow the instructions in the Home Control portal. From now on, you can take electronic control conveniently using the Home Control portal of the Home Control Central Unit. For more information on time control and configuration, as well as application examples, please refer to the Home Control online FAQ.

20 Please notice this information if you want to reset the Home Control Central Unit. If this controller is the primary controller for your network, resetting it will result in the nodes in your network being orphaned and it will be necessary after the reset to exclude and re-include all of the nodes in the network. If this controller is being used as a secondary controller in the network, use this procedure to reset this controller only in the event that the network primary controller is missing or otherwise inoperable.
