The following instructions will help you connect your PC to the ACU network off campus. These instructions are applicable for a computer that has Windows XP Professional. If you have Windows XP Home edition, you will need to make allowances for slightly different terminology and/or images. To configure the Internet Proxy Settings, go to page 5. Configuration 1. To start configuration, go to the Start Menu and up to the Control Panel. If your Start Menu has 2 columns, it will be directly in the Start Menu. If your Start menu has 1 column/list, the Control Panel will be under Settings. 2. In the Control Panel list, open Network Connections. 3. In the Left-hand tasks list, click on Create a new connection. This will bring up the Wizard welcome window. Click the Next Button. 4. Through the next 4 simple Window of the wizard, select the following options: 1) Connect to the network at my workplace. 2) Virtual Private network. 3) type ACUVPN in the Company Name field. 4) Do not dial the initial connection. Page 1

5. At the VPN Server selection window, type in: vp1.acu.edu.au 6. Click Next. 7. At the Connection Availability window, select My use only. 8. At the concluding window, ensure that the tickbox to add a shortcut to your desktop is checked and click the Finish button. If a connection window appears, click Cancel. 9. Back at the Network Connections window, you should now see ACUVPN in the list of connections. Right-click on ACUVPN and select Properties from the menu. Page 2

10. The ACUVPN Properties Window will appear. Select the Options tab at the top. Ensure that the three tickboxes under dialling options are checked: -Display progress while connecting -Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc. -Include Windows logon domain 11. Now select the Network tab at the top. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) so that it is highlighted in blue and click the Properties button. 12. Another Properties window will appear. Leave the top option on Obtain an IP address automatically. Change the second option to Use the following DNS server addresses. This will open the two fields below this. Enter the following IP addresses in the respective fields: -Preferred DNS server 192.148.22.45 -Alternate DNS server 192.148.22.46 13. Once these IP addresses have been entered, click the Advanced button. Page 3

14. In the Advanced window, select the DNS tab at the top and go straight to the DNS suffix for this connection. In the field, type: acustaff.acu.edu.au 15. Click OK to close one each of the three Properties windows. The Network Connections window can also be closed. Page 4

Configuring Internet/Proxy settings 1. Launch Internet Explorer. 2. Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. 3. Select the Connections tab at the top. Select ACUVPN in the list of dial-up & VPN connections and click the Settings button to the right. 4. In the ACUVPN settings window that appears, select Automatically detect settings. Click OK to close one each of the two Properties windows to close them. Internet Explorer can also be closed. Page 5

Connecting 1. Double-click on the VPN icon on your desktop. 2. In the Connection window that appears, enter your ACU network login details in the respective username and password fields. In the domain field, type: acustaff 3. Click Connect. Once the VPN connection is established, you may need to access the ACU network drives. Instructions for this can be found here. Disconnecting To disconnect the VPN connection and return to your internet connection. 1. Locate the VPN icon in your Icon tray. This is located in the bottom right-hand corner of the window next to the clock. The icon looks like two little computer screens. 2. Right-click on the icon and select Disconnect from the menu. Another way to disconnect is to open your network connections from the Control Panel, right-click on the ACUVPN connection there and select Disconnect from the Menu. Page 6
