ECB Digital - Our World (5th Grade) There are several ways to navigate around the Whiteboard Digital Books: 1 Go to a chosen unit or feature by clicking on a button on the main menu. 2 Go to a specific page by clicking on a page thumbnail on a unit menu. 3 Move to any page using the drop-down page menu at the top of the screen. 4 Move to the next or previous page by clicking on the arrows on the right and left of the screen. 5 Turn a page by clicking on any corner of the page or dragging it. 6 You can go back to the main menu at any time by clicking on Home at the top of the screen. 7 As you move the whiteboard pen or the mouse over a page, areas become highlighted in yellow. Clicking on a yellow area opens up an exercise screen. Vocabulary Word Lists groups of vocabulary items are listed, with access to their translations and sound F lashcard support each picture or translation from the book is provided with access to sound and the English word for checking 7 Grammar Grammar teaching boxes are enlarged to support explanations in class Grammar Help provides additional examples to support the grammar; examples are animated or illustrated Features Texts, Songs and Chants Each text has a mini-menu which shows the two activities available: - Read / Sing / Chant and follow presents the text with karaoke; students read silently and follow along as portions of the text are highlighted - Read and listen / Listen and sing / chant presents the text as it appears in the book; students can read and hear the recording of the text

Phonics (Read Better) Teaching boxes are enlarged; each word accessible with sound Weblinks Links to suitable enrichment sites related to text (YouTube, etc.) Weblink icon Slide Shows Provide enrichment and visual support for content in the book; text has been written specifically to suit level and interests of students Computer Tasks Provide suggested tasks that get students to use technology (email, PowerPoint, web searches, etc.)

Games One game provided at the end of each unit; covers vocabulary and grammar Functions Reveals all the answers for the exercise at once. A second click on the button hides all the answers. Reveals the answers progressively: the first click reveals the first answer; additional clicks reveal the subsequent answers; a final click hides all the answers. Allows you to hear an audio recording. It features a play/pause and a stop button, plus a slider, which you can use to navigate freely on the audio track. Plays and pauses a short audio recording. In texts that appear with a scrollbar on the right side or on the bottom, you can use the arrows to scroll the text vertically or horizontally. Allow you to move to the next or previous screen of the same interactive exercise. Resets the exercise screen by deleting all the answers. Closes the exercise screen. Using the Whiteboard Toolbar The toolbar at the bottom of the screen offers various useful whiteboard tools, which you can use on any page or exercise screen. Writing Tools Cursor Brings you back to Cursor mode after using any writing tool on the toolbar. Pen Allows you to write or draw on the screen. You can choose the colour and thickness of the pen. Highlighter Allows you to highlight a section that you would like to emphasize on the screen. You can choose the colour and thickness of the highlighter. Line Allows you to draw straight lines, either solid or dotted. You can also choose the colour, thickness and transparency of the line. Shape Allows you to create coloured areas in various shapes and colours. You can use the transparent option to highlight things on the screen or the opaque option to conceal things on the screen.

Notepad Allows you to type on any area you choose by drawing a notepad square on the screen. You can bold, underline and italicise the text, as well as choose font size and colour. You can also move the notepad around by dragging the top left corner. Dragging the bottom right corner of the notepad enlarges or reduces it. Clicking on the trash icon on the top right deletes the notepad. Keyboard Allows you to type using a virtual keyboard. Focusing Tools Zoom Allows you to zoom in on a particular area on the screen. You can zoom by: l drawing a zoom square around the area you wish to enlarge, or l clicking once on the screen this enlarges the biggest possible area around the point clicked. You can move to different zoomed-in areas of the screen by clicking and dragging the screen. You can continue to use the writing tools when zoomed in. Clicking on the Zoom icon again brings you back to the full screen. NOTE: Moving the projector back also enlarges the images on the whiteboard. Focus Dims the screen so you can create a spotlight by clicking and dragging a circle on the area you want to focus on. You can continue to use the writing tools in Focus mode. Clicking on the Focus icon again brings you back to the lit-up screen. Slide Creates a frame around the screen with sliding panels on all four sides so you can conceal parts of the screen. Clicking on the Slide icon again hides the frame. Board Covers the entire screen with a white board on which you can use any of the other toolbar tools. The erasing tools used on this board do not affect the markings made on a page or exercise screen underneath. Clicking on the Board icon again hides the board. Clear Removes all the markings from the screen. Moving from one page or exercise screen to another performs an automatic clear. Other Tools Save and Load Allows you to save up to 10 versions of any page or exercise screen where you have used the writing tools. You can then load your markings from the relevant page or screen at a later time. Timer Brings in a timer on the top left corner of the screen or on the last spot you had dragged the timer to. You may choose to use the timer to make an exercise more challenging or to add an element of competition. You can adjust the allotted time using the up/down arrows. The timer also features a play/pause and a stop button. Ten seconds before the gong, the ticking sound gets louder and the timer swings from side to side. Clicking on the Timer icon again or on the x on the top right corner of the timer itself hides the timer. Scoreboard Enables you to set any activity up as a team competition. Weblinks Provides Internet links relating to the topics covered on a particular Student s Book spread. The links are updated regularly. You can also add and save your own links, either for the whole book (click "General") or for the specific spread you are on. The Weblinks icon is highlighted when links are available on a particular spread. Updates Appears when there are updates available for your digital book. If you already have the latest updates, the icon will not be visible. Clicking on this icon takes you to a site from where you can download and install your updates. Erasing Tools Eraser Deletes any markings as you pass over them with the whiteboard pen or the mouse. Undo Undoes the last action performed with the writing tools. Redo Redoes an action that has been undone. Hide/Show Hides and reveals all the markings on the screen. Clicking on any of the writing tools or the Eraser icon cancels the Hide mode.
