OPTICAL FIBER INTRODUCTION Advantages of optical fiber as compared to copper cables are known. They feature a very high degree of isolation, as they are immune to crosstalk, electromagnetic interference or lightning. Also they have an almost unlimited bandwidth. Backbone versus Horizontal For data and video transmission, Alcatel Cabling Systems recommends optical fiber cable in the backbone cabling. This prepares the LAN for future expansion in the horizontal cabling, provides galvanic isolation between buildings and floors, and provides the necessary bandwidth for backbone cabling. In certain conditions optical fibers may be considered in the horizontal cabling. Increasing numbers of endusers are installing fiber in the horizontal for today s applications as well as future imaging and multimedia applications requiring high bandwidth. Several parameters will influence the technology selection : environment (EMI, high voltage,...), bandwidth, installation ease, security, application independence, etc. Loose tube versus Tight buffer Before putting optical fibers in practical use, influences such as pulling, bending and torsion strain have to be considered, as they can affect the optical properties of the fiber. Therefore the fibers need protection, which can either be provided by an external buffer, or by incorporating strength elements in the cable. Loose tube cables are constructed by applying a small plastic tube around the fiber, protecting it against deformation and friction. The tube permits mobility of the fiber and is filled with a flexible compound, making it smooth inside. This causes the lowest possible stress on the fiber. To ease installation, a number of fibers can be inserted in one tube. These cables are mainly used outdoors and where various invironmental influences, such as temperature variations, stress and pressure, make it difficult to meet highquality transmission. Tight buffered cables are constructed by applying a plastic directly over the coating of the fiber. This construction offers a much smaller outside diameter, making installation easier. As mechanical stresses directly affect the fiber inside, the cables are used in applications where mechanical stresses are reduced to a minimum, such as pigtails, and indoor cabling.
Multimode versus Singlemode The geometry of the fiber determines the type : singlemode fiber has a core diameter of 9µm, while multimode fiber has 62.5 or 50µm core diameters. For cost effectiveness and compatibility with fiberbased LAN equipment, multimode fiber is recommended. Singlemode fiber supports extended distances and very high bandwidth requirements.
