INTRODUCCIÓN If your HP B210a has a clogged printhead, this guide can be used to try and clear the clog. IMPORTANT: While there are no guarantees this will fix the problem, this will fix most printers. This fix also depends on the printhead being recoverable, so this will not work to recover a printhead with electrical problems. This fix will not work 100% of the time. If this fix does not work, it's generally better to replace the printer and not the printhead. Guide Notes WARNING: THIS PROCEDURE MAY DAMAGE PRINTHEADS WITH PREDISPOSED DAMAGE. If the printhead has failed, it was likely caused by predisposed damage. This guide is primarily made for the HP Photosmart Plus B210a, but is universal among all printers that use the 564 ink cartridge. IMPORTANT: Models with non removable printheads require special attention to preserve the calibration. These models may not work again if this is lost and SETUP cartridges are expected. If I have not tested the printer you are having problems against my calibration preservation procedure, I do not guarantee that you will be able to preserve it. It generally doesn't hurt to try on models with removable printheads, but I can't guarantee it will work unless I have tested it personally. Paso 1 Gather your supplies You will need the following supplies: Paper towels (Cleaning/drying and workspace cleanliness) Water (Distilled recommended) Plastic bag (Ink cartridge storage) Recommended: Extra ink cartridges (Just in case any cartridges need to be replaced) Optional: Gloves and 91% alcohol (Stubborn clogs only) Paso 2 Heating up water If possible, distilled water should be used. Most coffee makers are not an ideal source for water. If your water is dirty, filter it as much as you can. If a Keurig is used, remove the K-Cup holder and make 2 batches or further filter the water if it is dirty. Before working on removing the printhead, warm up some water so it is hot. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 4 de 10
Paso 3 Print a baseline image Print a test image as a baseline. Good images can be found here: NTSC color bars or SMPTE color bars Paso 4 Remove the ink tanks If you have the ink shipping caps, these can be used in place of a plastic bag. Remove the ink cartridges from the printer and put them in a plastic bag. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 5 de 10
Paso 5 Preserve your printhead calibration If the printer is plugged in while the printhead is removed, the calibration data may be erased. If you need clearer instructions, follow this guide for additional instructions. Important: Verify the printer is unplugged before doing anything. With the ink cartridges removed from the printer, remove the printhead. With the printer is unplugged, remove the printhead. Lift the locking latch up and the printhead will be loose. Once it is loose, remove the printhead. Important: Touching the contacts or printhead nozzles may damage it. With the printhead unlocked, remove it. Lift the printhead up as shown. Leave the scanner lid so you know the printhead is removed. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 6 de 10
Paso 6 Clean the printer contacts Failure to clean this area may result in Ink System Failure warnings. This may erase your printhead calibration. With the printhead removed, inspect the electrical contacts in the printer. If you see any ink, wipe this area with an alcohol wipe. Do this now so you know is is done. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 7 de 10
Paso 7 Clean the printhead Alcohol should only be used as a last resort since it can damage the printhead. If alcohol is used, purge the printhead with clean water THREE TIMES. Recommended circulation times: With alcohol: 5-10 minutes. Without alcohol: 15 minutes. The water will get lighter as the ink is cleared from the printhead. Change the water until it is clear. Tip: For stubborn clogs, an ultrasonic cleaner or paintbrush may help break the clog down. Pour hot water into a bowl and let the printhead sit. Change the water as it gets dark and unusable. Do this until the water is reasonably clear. To mitigate Printhead Problem errors, dry the contacts and nozzles by hand. Before reinstalling the printhead, let it dry for ~2-3 hours outside of the printer. Before reinstalling the printhead, let it dry for ~2-3 hours outside of the printer. Tip: If you want to speed up the drying time, put the printhead in front of a fan. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 8 de 10
Paso 8 Reinstall the printhead and ink Since the calibration will be erased if the printhead errors out, wait until you are sure the prinhthead is dry before installation. If your printer says Printhead Problem, the calibration data is gone. Check if the printhead is dry and installed correctly if this happens. WARNING: Since printhead initialization uses a lot of ink (~1/2 of non XL carts), it is best to use new ink cartridges. While the printer will not treat the printhead as "new", a Printhead Preparation process must run. This is unavoiable. Once the printhead is satisfactorily dry, reinstall it in the printer. This is done in the reverse of how it was removed. Install your ink cartridges and plug the printer in. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA es.ifixit.com Página 9 de 10
Paso 9 Test the printer If any ink cartridge is low, replace it for this test. The ink levels must be good for accuracy. If your printer still has an issue, it is likely a bad printhead. Try using the built-in cleaning utility; if it does not work it's generally better to replace the printer since the printhead is ~$80 and may not resolve the issue. If you have a 5 color printer (K/PK/C/M/Y), use the Photo printing mode. This will allow you to test Photo Black. After replacing the printhead, test your printer again. Use the same settings as the before test and see if the results have improved. If your printer is working as well as it used to, then the problem was caused by a clog that needed manual cleaning. However, if your printer is not working right after letting the parts dry for a little longer, then it is likely the printhead has other problems or was damaged when it was cleaned.
