GCE Results Information for Ex yr13 Leavers Please read all the following information carefully. Results The following points may be helpful in explaining Uniform Mark Scales (UMS) 1. Raw marks are the marks that are recorded on scripts by examiners the maximum raw mark differs according to the unit/component. 2. Candidates results in unitised subjects are reported as uniform marks these are fixed for all units/components with equal weighting. 3. Uniform marks are calculated from raw marks. 4. There will not necessarily be an obvious direct relationship between raw and uniform marks. 5. Small variations in raw marks may lead to larger UMS differences. If you have a result you do not understand (e.g. X or # or a missing grade) or if anything seems to be wrong, speak to someone in school immediately. See attached list of email addresses. There are several important points to note however: The Exam Boards state that only the school can make a request for an enquiry into a result (you cannot do it yourself), and we will only consider doing this if we feel a mistake may have been made. There is a charge for making enquiries that is only refunded if your overall grade is subsequently changed (up or down), and the charges vary from board to board. I have enclosed a table (see green sheet) showing all costs (correct at the time of printing). The boards reserve the right to alter these costs, but I should be able to advise you of any changes on, or after, results day. NB You should be aware that marks, and therefore grades, may stay the same, be improved or be lowered following a review, so before deciding to request a review do talk to your teachers as they may have additional information on how you performed during your exams and therefore be in a position to provide you with guidance. Give this careful thought. In the majority of cases, a review of marking does not result in a change to grades. It is not normally possible for coursework marks to be reviewed.
Bearing all of this in mind, if you still wish to apply for a review of marking it is worth considering how successful you might be. In the last couple of years, less than 20% of marking reviews requested by Sutton Grammar students resulted in a change in grade, although others did raise the score of individual candidates, but not by enough to change the final grade. It is also worth bearing in mind that papers are now not re-marked but the existing marked script is reviewed to see if it meets the marking standards set by the exam board. It is advised that you look at what mark you got and how close that is to a particular grade boundary before considering this seriously. You may also want to consider this if there is a very clear discrepancy between the marks you got and how well you felt the exam had gone. Again, talk to your teachers as they will have info on mark schemes and grade boundaries so they can advise you on this. Reviewing of marks is an expensive process for students/parents and while we appreciate your wish to get as good grades as possible it is only right you are aware in advance of the low success rates. All enquiries and script requests must be paid for using ParentPay before submitting requests, and we shall need to see a copy of your receipt along with your request forms. We cannot act on any requests until you have paid. The request forms are all in your results pack and also available on the school website: https://www.suttongrammar.sutton.sch.uk/exam-information Priority Marking: If your university place could be affected, there is a Priority Marking service available. Requests for this must be made using the enclosed pink form ( Enquiries about Results ) and returned to us by 12noon on 23 rd August at the latest, as this is only available for one week after Results Day. You should realise that although exam boards deal with these requests as quickly as possible, there is no guarantee they will make a decision in time for a university place to be held for you and so you are strongly advised to contact the university at the earliest opportunity to see what they advise. We should receive priority reviews of marking within 15 calendar days of the request being placed. Marking If your university place is not dependent on the outcome of an enquiry you should request a Review of Marking. Submit the enclosed pink form ( Enquiries about Results ) to us along with your ParentPay receipt by 12 noon on 20 th September at the latest. We should receive the outcome of reviews of marking within 20 calendar days of the request being placed. If your grade should change after a Marking, the exam boards will notify UCAS of the change within 48 hours. Return of exam scripts If you want to see a script before deciding about requesting a Marking you should fill in the attached blue form, requesting a Priority Copy of the script, but you must act promptly as this service is only available for one week after Results Day. We will need a request using the enclosed blue form along with your ParentPay receipt by 12noon on 23 rd August at the latest. We should receive priority photocopies of script(s) by 6 th September, so still in time to request a standard Marking if that is what you are advised by teaching staff. It is also possible for you to request the return of your original exam script. Requests must be made to us, again using the enclosed blue form accompanied by your ParentPay receipt, by 12noon on 27 th September at the latest. This service is only of use to you as a learning tool as these original scripts are sent out after the closing date for Marking requests has passed. Once a script has been returned a Marking cannot be applied for. If you wish to have a copy of a script after it has been reviewed you should request the copy at the same time as a Marking (the cost for this script is 14.50).
Edexcel allow us to download and print many of their scripts instantly (if they have been marked online). There is a standard fee of 5 per script, and we shall still need your blue form and ParentPay receipt. If you ask a Head of Subject to do this for you they will also need your blue request form and ParentPay receipt to confirm that you have paid before they can take any action. NB: Edexcel scripts cost 5 each, but if you want a copy of a script that has undergone a review of marking the cost is 14.50 Most scripts and remarks are sent to us by email, so providing you have given us your email address on your request form we shall forward the script/review straight on to you when it arrives. Costs and Tips for Enquiries About Results See the fees table and useful tips on the enclosed green sheet. Re-sits If, after receiving your results, you find the need to re-sit any of your A levels, and you would like to do this at Sutton Grammar School, you should first contact Mr Ironside as you will need his permission. You should then contact us or come to see us in the Exams Office to discuss details. Re-sits will be charged at the standard rate of 30 per unit, and we would need to know all of the details by early January 2019. Certificates Your certificates are the only official record of your grades, and therefore will not be posted. They start arriving during the autumn term, so you may come in to school to collect them any time after the 10 th November. You can call or email us first if you want to confirm we have them. If you send someone else to collect your certificates for you, they must have a letter of authorisation, signed by you. If that is not possible, we can post your certificate(s) to you, using recorded delivery. This of course means that someone will need to be available to sign for the receiving of the package, and the cost is 5 (you will need to pay this to us before we post your certificates out to you). Last of all, we would like to wish you the very best of luck for the future, wherever that may take you next. We look forward to seeing you again when you come to collect your certificates. Mrs J.
