Comma The comma has four distinct uses: 1. listing comma 2. joining comma 3. gapping comma 4. bracketing commas vbnwebsite.weebly.com 1

Listing Comma The listing comma is used as a kind of substitute for the words and, or. It is used in a list when three or more words, phrases or even complete sentences are joined together. We might call this construction an X, Y and Z list. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 2

Listing Comma e.g. The Three Musketeers were Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Lisa speaks French, Juliet speaks Italian and I speak Spanish. It is not customary in British English to put a comma before the words and, or. However, in American English it is a common practice. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 3

Listing Comma Remember, you must not join two complete sentences with a comma, but three or more complete sentences may be joined with listing commas plus and or or. Lisa speaks French, Juliet speaks Italian and I speak Spanish. (correct) Lisa speaks French, Juliet speaks Italian. (incorrect) vbnwebsite.weebly.com 4

Listing Comma Lisa speaks French, Juliet speaks Italian. (incorrect) This is a mistake called a run on sentences or a comma splice. We can fix this sentence in one of the following ways: - Lisa speaks French. Juliet speaks Italian. - Lisa speaks French; Juliet speaks Italian. - Lisa speaks French, and Juliet speaks Italian. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 5

Listing Comma A listing comma is also used in a list of modifiers which all modify the same thing. e.g. Her long, dark, glossy hair fascinated me. Such a comma could be replaced by and without destroying the sense. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 6

Listing Comma However, She gave me an antique ivory box. I prefer Australian red wines to all others. This time there are no commas because there is no list. Modifiers in these sentences DO NOT modify the same thing. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 7

Joining Comma The joining comma is used to join two complete sentences into a single sentence, and it must be followed by a connecting word. The connecting words which can be used in this way are and, or, but, while and yet. e.g. Lisa speaks French, and Juliet speaks Italian. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 8

Joining Comma Note that most other connecting words cannot be preceded by a joining comma. For example, the connecting words however, therefore, hence, consequently, nevertheless and thus cannot be used after a joining comma. Sentences like these require, not a comma, but a semicolon. e.g. Two members of the expedition were too ill to continue; nevertheless the others decided to press on. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 9

Gapping Comma We use a gapping comma to show that one or more words have been left out to avoid repetition. e.g. Some Norwegians wanted to base their national language on the speech of the capital city; others, on the speech of the rural countryside. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 10

Gapping Comma Gapping commas are not always strictly necessary: you can leave them out if the sentence is perfectly clear without them: e.g. Italy is famous for her composers and musicians, France for her chefs and philosophers. Use your judgement: if a sentence seems clear without gapping commas, don't use them; if you have doubts, put them in. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 11

Bracketing Comma The rule is this: a pair of bracketing commas is used to mark off a weak interruption of the sentence. e.g. These findings, we would suggest, cast doubt upon his hypothesis. Darwin's Origin of Species, published in 1859, revolutionized biological thinking. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 12

Bracketing Comma The weak interruption set off by bracketing commas could, in principle, be removed from the sentence, and the result would still be a complete sentence that made good sense. e.g. These findings, we would suggest, cast doubt upon his hypothesis. These findings cast doubt upon his hypothesis. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 13

Bracketing Comma Problem: Yet, outside that door, lay a whole new world. (wrong) Yet lay a whole new world. (wrong) Yet outside that door lay a whole new world. (correct) vbnwebsite.weebly.com 14

Bracketing Comma Let us check: She groped for her cigarettes, and finding them, hastily lit one. She groped for her cigarettes hastily lit one. She groped for her cigarettes and, finding them, hastily lit one. (correct) vbnwebsite.weebly.com 15

Bracketing Comma Defining and non-defining relative clauses Margaret Thatcher, who hated trains, refused to consider privatizing the railways. The rings of Saturn, which can be easily seen with a small telescope, are composed of billions of tiny particles of rock. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 16

Bracketing Comma Defining and non-defining relative clauses The pictures which are being sent back by the Hubble Space Telescope may revolutionize our understanding of the universe. Anybody who still believes that Uri Geller has strange powers should read James Randi's book. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 17

Comma Summary Use a listing comma in a list where and ox or would be possible instead. Use a joining comma before and, or, but, yet or while followed by a complete sentence. Use a gapping comma to show that words have been omitted instead of repeated. Use a pair of bracketing commas to set off a weak interruption. vbnwebsite.weebly.com 18
