Comprehensive Search Sustain Cited Search
Learning outcomes By the end of this workshop you should be able to: 1. Systematically search the literature by formulating effective search statements - using appropriate databases and advanced search techniques. 2. Use cited reference searching to find other relevant resources. 3. Create table of content/search alert statements to keep up to date.
Assessment: Resource Log (1,500-2,000 words) Tasks: 1. Your research question 2. Your search strategy 3. Keeping useful notes 4. Data management 5. Sustain 6. Publishing 7. Research Impact
Search Methodologies Search Process Steps 1. Preliminary searching 2. Browsing journals 3. Comprehensive searching 4. Cited reference searching 5. Limiting 6. Sustaining - with alerts
Literature review Your literature review requires an extensive search of the literature. You must search for your specific topic, and the literature related to your topic: This includes seminal literature, the theoretical background, and justification for your choice of methodology. You will not be creating just one search, but several, different searches. You will search in different resources, each with their strengths and limitations.
Databases may contain Dictionaries etc ebooks Journals/Magazines Newspapers Conference Papers Multimedia Financial Data Evidence-based Research Statistics Geographic Information Systems Patents and Standards Education Resources Legal Information Industry Reports
Common features help screens basic & advanced search limiters for date, full text, peer-reviewed etc record selection & sorting print, save export to reference management software thesauri & subject headings email alerts To evaluate strengths and limitations of databases see criteria http://airs.library.qut.edu.au/resources/4/1/
Database structure a collection of records with fields that contain data
Database differences The specific search syntax used check the help screen! The fields that make up the records subject, author, full text etc. Adapt your search across databases
Planning your search First - Identify the key concepts What are the relevant: > synonyms > broader, narrower & related terms > subject headings Creativity ideas, innovation, initiative...
Mapping your search How are social networking sites impacting on the culture of young adults? Social networking sites Culture Young adults
Synonyms Social networking sites Social media Social networks Facebook Twitter Instagram Culture Behavior Young adults Youth Teen Adolescent
Search techniques Boolean operators social media AND youth facebook OR twitter Phrase searching Proximity searching social media young N5 facebook Truncation behavi* OR culture
Search techniques Keyword searching finds your terms in fields & full text
Using specific fields Works by Steve Jobs Works about Steve Jobs
Using specific fields Subjects are defined by the publisher Use the database s thesaurus to browse subjects Subjects vary in each database
Phrase and proximity searching Search for a phrase: Or words near each other: nearby 5 words apart (w/5, n5, %5) in a sentence - 15 words apart in a paragraph - 50 words apart
Truncation & wildcards Truncation creat* = create, creator, creative, creativity Wildcards organi?ation - with an 's' or a 'z Check the database HELP menu as symbols vary.
Nesting Terms in parentheses are performed first: ("respiratory tract infection" or bronchiolitis) and management (tv or television) and (industry or business)
Activity (45 minutes) Database searching 1. Use the QUT Library databases pages to select specific databases for your research 2. Search for your topic trying various search techniques

Search alert tools database search alerts table of contents (TOC) alerts periodic searching
ACTIVITY (15min) Go to Current Contents Connect, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost or publisher website and set up a TOC alert.
Search Cited Reference Searching
Cited reference searching Determine an author s standing in the field. Identify the research used to develop known work. Track back to the original research. Discover new authors who have cited relevant papers. Track research strands to current practice & identify gaps in the research.
Traditional vs. cited reference search
Cited reference searching There are a variety of citation tools available - they produce different results Some are better than others for certain disciplines
Google Scholar Cited Search Type title into Google Scholar: Click to see articles that cite this article
Activity (10 minutes) Cited reference searching Find the following citation in WOS, Scopus, Google Scholar Blaesing, Bettina; Calvo-Merino, Beatriz; Cross, Emily S.; et al. Neurocognitive control in dance perception and performance Acta Psychologica Volume: 139 Issue: 2 Pages: 300-308 Published: FEB 2012 How many times has this article been cited? Take a look at the other works that have cited this article.
What s next?... AIRS 3 In the next AIRS workshop you will: 1. Develop a systematic approach to organising, managing and recording your information and notes. 2. Apply appropriate data management strategies to organise and utilise your data proficiently, ethically and legally. 3. Identify a key conference or meeting to attend and describe the networking benefits
