Instructional Technology Services D2L Brightspace Faculty Help Topic: Content The Content tool in D2L Brightspace allows you to add, edit, and link items in your course content for your students to see and use. Click on the Content link under MATERIALS. For first time users, there will be a welcome message set up to help you get started. From the Content management page, you can add Content, add modules to hold content, add book marks, and lots more. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 1 Last Modified: 9/26/16

You can create modules to help organize your content. As shown below, the Unit 1 and Unit 2 modules help organize what content goes with that certain unit. You may reorder modules and content at any time. Course Overview The course overview page is what students in your class will see when they first enter the content page. Here, you can enter in a class description with all of the editing features D2L Brightspace has (text, images, videos, etc.) You may also add documents, PDF s, PowerPoint files, and Excel documents. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 2 Last Modified: 9/26/16

If the file you tried entering is an invalid file type, an error message will show: To remove or change attachments, select the dropdown arrow next to Course Overview in the course overview page. The Course overview page only allows you to add one file, and one description. If you need to enter multiple files, try combining them into one file for display. Bookmarks The bookmarks page allows you to give students quick links to important content items. For example, if you bookmarked your syllabus from your content, it would show up in Bookmarks as a link. To add bookmarks, select the content item you wish to bookmark. On the top right of the content item page select the bookmark item. Course Schedule Upcoming Events Items in your course that have start, end, or due dates are shown in the upcoming events page. Here, students will be able to see what objects are upcoming today, tomorrow, and the next 7 days. Students will be able to select links to the items from the upcoming event page. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 3 Last Modified: 9/26/16

Course Schedule In the Course Schedule window, you see all calendar items, content dates, and events. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 4 Last Modified: 9/26/16

Table of Contents The table of contents holds all modules and content within those modules. In the table of contents you are able to add new content items, add activities, edit content items, move items, and more. Adding Content Adding content in D2L Brightspace 10.3 is easy, just create modules for content items to be entered in, and from there you can add content items such as quizzes, discussions, activities, and more. You also can take advantage of the new 10.3 drag and drop feature for a fast and easy content upload. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 5 Last Modified: 9/26/16

When uploading files, you have to put the file in a module. For example, let s create a new module named Unit 3, to create new modules, just type in the add a module field and press Enter. Your module will then be added to the table of contents page. After that, select the Unit 3 module (if not already selected). To add content to your module, you can: Add files via Drag and Drop Add objects/activities from the drop down menus. Adding Files via Drag and Drop To add files using the drag and drop feature, simply drag files from a folder or your desktop into the drag and drop field. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 6 Last Modified: 9/26/16

OR After you have dragged your file, drop it into the field. Your file should now be in the content page in your module. Adding Content via Dropdown Menus ITS D2L Brightspace Page 7 Last Modified: 9/26/16

Dropping files into the content page is easy, but you cannot drag and drop quizzes, discussions, Assignments, etc. In order to do so, you have to use the dropdown menus to add new content items as well. Select item in list to add/create item in your content menu. More Actions Under the more actions menu, there are options such as Bulk Edit, Download, Set all completion methods, and delete module. Bulk Edit: Turns on editing for all content items at once in the module. (Description, published/draft, restrictions, etc.) Download: Downloads locally all files in the module. Set All Completion Methods: You can change all completion methods at one time with this tool. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 8 Last Modified: 9/26/16

Adding Dates and Restrictions Adding restrictions to content allows you to make the content visible for a certain amount of time, make it hidden, or add custom conditions created by yourself. Click Add dates and restrictions. Once selected, you have the option to add start, end, and due dates. You may also add release conditions. Click Update when all settings are as desired. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 9 Last Modified: 9/26/16

Your content item will now display any dates set and restrictions. Re-Ordering Items In D2L Brightspace 10.1 you can re-order items by drag and drop, which makes changing order of items extremely easy. Just click the panhandles beside modules or content items, and drag them up or down your list to move them. Once you ve clicked and held the item, drag it to desired location. You may also drag modules into other modules, creating sub-modules. Moving Item Positions The gray line indicates where the item you are holding will be dropped. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 10 Last Modified: 9/26/16
