Abstract Recall Profile clips and Run them from Grass Valley Production Switchers. Application Overview What a GREAT combination! Tektronix Grass Valley production switchers and the Profile disk recorders team up with DNF Industries to offer new power and control. The Result! Instant recall of up to 4 separate Profile clips on 4 separate outputs with the push of a SINGLE switcher EMEM Effects Memory Button. When using the Grass Valley timeline function, you can run any one, or any combination of clips with RUN commands. How s That? All of the Grass Valley Models 200, 250, 2200, 3000 and 4000 production switchers use Peripheral Bus II (Pbus II) protocol to control various peripheral devices. DNF has implemented Pbus II protocol in their ST-300 machine control panel. The ST-300 translates Pbus II to a Profile protocol for machine control functions. Case Study RTL Television in Cologne, Germany has developed a nice application for this interface. They have a Model 4000-3 connected to a four channel Profile disk recorder with the ST-300. Friedemann Wetter, Sr. Engineer for RTL, said that the installation and configuration went very smoothly, and they are planning to install another Model 4000 in a new control room going in next year. The system specifications call for the same kind of Model 4000/Profile interface. RTL is using this robust combination in their mid-day news production. One of the Profile clips used during the news presentation consists of an animated bar over a chroma key green background. The bar moves across the screen from left to right for the duration of the clip. There is animation within the bar during the move across the screen. When the clip is recalled and run with the EMEM, it is timed with a wipe transition that is concealed behind the bar. Live video sources are wiped on and off as backgrounds to the chroma-keyed, animated bar. The Model 4000 operators at RTL are very pleased with the consistent, flawless operation of the interface with effects that have critical timing requirements. They now have the tools to create very unique and sophisticated transitions for live video sources! Copyright 1999, Tektronix, Inc. 1

More Applications Bumpers: Have an EMEM Load and QUE the next bumper on the Profile (i.e. Coming up next ). Then with the next EMEM, run the bumper and effect to it from the switcher EMEM. Special effects: Have a 4-channel digital effect in which each channel has a specific Profile clip feeding it. For example, And now for LIVE weather reports from London, Paris, Berlin and Rome. Graphics, Video and Key: Simultaneously recall Graphics with key signals. For instance: The anchor has an over-the-shoulder Graphic of the fire story. Next, mosaic wipe to the other 2 channels of Profile (video and key) of the next story. The sky is the limit The ability to recall and control video clips from the production switcher creates many new possibilities for editors and live operators offering numerous new options with a high degree of flexibility. PRC-100 The Pieces Grass Valley Switcher Peripheral Bus II Protocol (PBus II): Developed by Grass Valley for the Model 200 production switcher, this serial protocol uses the RS485 specification. The PBus II protocol has been included as a standard feature in several different Grass Valley production switchers, with the exceptions being the Model 100/110, the Model 300 and older production switchers. Peripheral Bus II is a serial interface using serial drivers and receivers with 9 pin D connectors and standard serial cable. However, the RS485 specification allows for a bus architecture with daisy-chained peripheral devices on the serial bus. Each device has a unique address. The production switcher sends an address byte out on the bus, followed by a peripheral trigger byte. The software written for each peripheral device provides for responses to PBus triggers appropriate to the functionality of the specific peripheral. Typical responses can be VTR functions such as play, fast forward, rewind, stop, etc. A group of standard commands are provided that are more effect-memory specific such as recall, learn, run, etc. These can be used to perform effect, or function memory operations in the peripheral. DNF Industries ST-300 Machine Control Panel: DNF is a manufacturer of machine control panels designed for specific, often custom, customer requirements. They are the OEM for the Tektronix, Profile PRC-100 machine control panel. They also manufacture the ST-300, a slow-motion machine control panel, that has a Peripheral Bus II Option. The ST-300 can control up to 4 Profile channels at once. Operation It s as Simple as 1,2,3. 1. Scroll through the directory of the Profile disk recorder using the compact DNF ST-300 controller. 2. Choose the clip you want, even the specific timecode of the clip. 3. Learn the EMEM. Interconnect and Setup The following is a description of the setup and operation for the DNF ST-300, Profile disk recorder and the Grass Valley 3000/4000 switcher. (however, any Grass Valley production switcher with PBus II may interface to a Profile using a DNF-ST-300 with PBus II option. Connect the power supply to the DNF ST-300 to Power connector. Next, connect the PB interface cable between the AUX connector on the DNF and Port A3 on the 4000 switcher. Next connect standard RS 422 cables between the DNF and the Profile as follows: DNF VTR connectors Profile remote ports VTR 1 to P1 VTR 2 to P2 VTR 3 to P3 VTR 4 to P4 Profile Setup: Turn on/boot the Profile. Next, launch the VDR icon. Odetics protocol by: Controller/select/ Odetics Broadcast Set each VDR, connected to the DNF, to a comm port by: Controller/comm port/p1 (P1 for VDR 1, P2 for VDR 2, ) DNF Setup: Setup the Pbus IO addresses by: Menu/(turn jog knob through 8 menus to)pbio address 01 (01 for DNF control panel VTR1, 02 for VTR2, ) *Alternative DNF Setup This saves on the amount of PBus triggers required from the switcher to fire multiple Profiles. Assign all 4 DNF VTRs the same PBIO address, giving you the ability to simultaneously learn/recall 4 different clips through the same address. Then issue 1 trigger to all 4 simultaneously, i.e. play. Setup the PBus IO addresses by: Menu/(turn jog knob through 8 menus to)pbio address 01 (01 for DNF control panel VTR1, 01 for VTR2, ) Copyright 1999, Tektronix, Inc. 4

Switcher : 4000/3000/2200 The GOOD news. This method gives you 4 complete separate VDRs with separate control of each. Caution. To start and stop all 4 separate VDRs would use up all 8 of the available 8 triggers in the 4000 switcher, per EMEM.
