[Solved] Title effects in v11 free? Posted by Driftwood Productions - 08 Jul 2012 15:24 I'm running LWKS v11 free edition, and am trying to figure out how to add title effects to my project, however, I cant seem to find them in the effects menu, are title effects in Pro only, or am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance for any help. Posted by Driftwood Productions - 08 Jul 2012 15:27 Unrelated follow up question, does Print Screen have a separate effect, in LWKS, or could I use that for screen capturing? Posted by donkpow - 08 Jul 2012 15:36 The titler is not included in the free edition of lwks. You need to use an another application for that. The forum has several solutions to this problem. "Print Screen", on your keyboard, is a function outside of lwks. It works the same as it does with or without applications running on the screen. It captures a "snapshot" of the screen when you press it. Are you looking for screen capture software for video? Posted by Driftwood Productions - 08 Jul 2012 15:39 Thank you for your help donkpow, Do you recommend any one in particular? I don't need any screen capture software for video, I am planning on making a LWKS basics tutorial for 1 / 6
an indie film forum I frequent, since no one there seems to be able to use the timeline well. I thought that might help since everyone there seems to use Sony Vegas, Which I feel doesn't work as smoothly as LWKS. Posted by donkpow - 08 Jul 2012 16:11 I have camstudio, but I never use it. I can't vouch for the quality of any. Sorry. Posted by Forum Admin - 08 Jul 2012 16:56 Don't forget that instead of spending hours figuring out how to make external titlers work with Lightworks Free, you could just pay $60/ 50/ 40 for the built-in, real-time, GPU accelerated Native Lightworks Pro titleing tool. You'll be supporting the Lightworks project as well, which means more features, sooner, even in the Free version! Well that might work even for people like me - if the pro license would not be limited to 12 months of usage time. I mean there are not only people around here making their money with Lightworks but elsewhere, so I would really prefer the same license model as many other commercial NLEs have it: Buy a certain version once and use that as long as you want. Like this the annual turnover regarding Lightworks Pro might even increase Kind regards, Tim Posted by Greg_E - 03 Feb 2013 16:48 3 / 6
It's cheaper than the annual upgrade fee from any other software maker, the cheapest upgrade I've seen for Vegas Pro was $99 but normally $199. It is also WAY cheaper than the Adobe Cloud, at least with cloud you get access to a bunch of tools for your $40 a month and always have the newest version available. But then a lot of people don't ever upgrade the software to the newest version unless they really want the newest feature. Posted by timzett - 03 Feb 2013 20:04 Greg, I agree on your statement. As so often, there are two sides of the medal For sales position and also regarding product continuity, it might be better if the customers are pushed on going to a new version at least once a year. On the other hand, I can tell you from my experience that quite often there are also technical matters which forces people sometimes to stay with a certain version for a longer period. Obviously, that is not possible with Lightworks at the moment. Regards, Tim Posted by Greg_E - 03 Feb 2013 20:51 I agree, sometimes there is a very large reason to stay on a current version, just take Final Cut Pro as an example. Older hardware or operating system is another good reason. But lets also look at the other side... Vegas Pro 12 Edit costs $356: www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16832135326 This equals 5.9 years of Lightworks Pro, and I'm sure that with each renewal you are not forced to 4 / 6
upgrade to the latest version so you could keep running the old version of Lightworks. The only argument left would be that Vegas Pro 12 Edit has a lot of effects tools that Lightworks does not offer, so maybe the value is put down to 2.5 to 3 years for Lightworks. And when it comes right down to the base level, what a lot of people are doing would be easily done in NCH software's VideoPad for a one time purchase fee. Let's not forget that some really great work has been edited on imovie and other extremely simple consumer applications. It is normally more the creative idea than the tools used to put the pieces together. Maybe the lack of a title tool in the free version of Lightworks will force someone to write a really good free titling application that can output files with alpha channels, then import those files and do a key in Lightworks. Posted by timzett - 03 Feb 2013 21:18 Greg, you convinced me It's true that Lightworks Pro is not expensive as such, it merely has a great value. Maybe I will also go pro one day, and by the way I dumped VideoPad because it was not even capable of exporting anamorphous MPEG2 DVD files: http://nch.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/16213-features-request-on-input-format-support-aspect-rat io-and-51-sound/ I was on PowerDirector 8 for more than 3 years, and I'd say some very good results were gained, even with the comfort of working natively with the AVCHD footage right from the camera. Not because the application just provided it but because the performance for AVCHD timeline editing was there. However, the main reason why I'm trying with Lightworks now is the fact that you cannot optimize your footage much with a 4:2:0 colour subsampling as all the consumer formats have it. So for me working with DVCPro HD on Lightworks is a real benefit regarding footage quality enhancement. Regarding the title tool in the pro version of Lightworks, one can only hope that no any more features will 5 / 6
be stripped down at the free version in the future, which would degrade the wonderful concept of the Lightworks free distribution and its community. Cheers, Tim Posted by Greg_E - 04 Feb 2013 01:26 Keep track of Davinci Resolve lite, I'm pretty sure you can convert HD resolutions with it to a few different codecs, and at least a couple of those should be able to work in Lightworks free. With the way they are going I expect to see the editing features expanded which might allow title generation with alpha channel. Just something to keep an eye on. Also if you know anyone that can program, there are a couple open source title tools for Mac that seem to have really nice features. Getting one of those ported from Carbon/Cocoa to Windows would be great! 6 / 6
