Microsoft Security Bulletins Page 2 of 10 Install Windows Security Patches and Service Packs To download patches, run Windows Update. Our strategy is to test all Windows Service Packs and all security patches (sometimes referred to as hot fixes ) which apply to the environments in which Avid and Avid Broadcast products run. Our current methodology is to utilize Windows Update on a representative sample of Avid and Avid Broadcast products under test upon notification of new Security Bulletin availability by Microsoft. These systems are updated and observed while under test. Once the test period has completed (approx 5 days), support for the latest release of Security Bulletins is announced. It is Avid s goal to protect our customers infrastructures from the resource-draining effects of an enterprise-wide virus attack. NOTE: Avid is dependent on Microsoft s timely distribution of service packs and security patches; we must test our solutions before claiming support for each service pack or patch. Sometimes code changes are required in this process. CURRENT MICROSOFT SECURITY BULLETIN STATUS The Microsoft security bulletins for February (MS17-005) have been qualified with current Avid Video, Shared Storage and Avid Broadcast products under test. No exceptions this month. Information about previous security bulletin exceptions (if any) is below under Recent Microsoft Security Bulletin exceptions. Unless explicitly called out below, all previous bulletins have passed qualification. Not-so-recent Microsoft Security Bulletin exceptions NOTE: MS12-078 (KB2753842) (from late 2012) In some cases, installation of this bulletin affects the rendering of some OpenType fonts (those in OpenType Compact Font Format). A simple and effective workaround is documented in the following Avid knowledge base article: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_us/troubleshooting/some-installed-windows-fonts-are-unavailable A link to the Microsoft Technet article follows for reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2753842 NOTE: MS11-004 (KB2489256) (from early 2011) fails to install properly on the ISIS 5000 Engine and also on the ISIS 7000 System Director on the new AS3000 server only. Please do not install this update. (The affected service is IIS FTP which is enabled on the ISIS 5000 Engine and on the ISIS 7000 System Director on the AS3000 server.) The workaround for this issue is now posted on the Avid Knowledge Base at the following location: http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?docid=406411&newlang=language

Page 3 of 10 Note also that the ISIS 7000 System Director and ISIS CIFS/FPT Server are not affected by this issue. (They do not require the MS11-004 security bulletin.) This bulletin is rated Important by Microsoft and we believe that customers are not exposed to undue risk. Further information about MS11-004 is available on Microsoft s Web site, here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms11-004.mspx. NOTE: The patch released with Microsoft Security Advisory Notification [KB971029] was qualified in February. This patch s effect is to restrict the execution of an autorun.inf to CD and DVD media only under the Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64), Windows Vista (x64) and Windows Storage Server 2008 ( R1 ) operating systems. (It does not affect Windows Server 2008 R2.) With this patch applied, the autorun functionality will no longer be able to be invoked from a hard drive or from USB media. Further details and downloads are available on the following page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029. Historical Security Bulletin exceptions have been moved to the Appendix. ENABLING WINDOWS UPDATE ON ISIS 64-BIT SYSTEM DIRECTORS Currently (as of September 2009), Windows updates are disabled on 64-bit Avid Unity ISIS System Directors running Windows Storage Server 2003. Avid Unity ISIS v2.0.4 includes a command file which will enable the Windows Update service and allow you to update your System Director. See the ISIS 2.0.4 ReadMe for complete instructions.

See Disabling DCOM in Appendix 1 to further isolate and protect the Windows NT File Manager. A Note on Windows XP SP2 With the release of MediaComposer Adrenaline v. 1.6 / NewsCutter v. 5.6 (etc.) (October 2004), support has been added for Windows XP Service Pack 2. The list of supported Microsoft security bulletins (above) now includes explicit information regarding the Service Pack level for Windows XP. Appendices 1. Historical list of Security Bulletin Exceptions 2. Disabling DCOM on the Windows NT File Manager 3. Document Change History Page 5 of 10 Appendix 1. Historical list of Security Bulletin Exceptions Please note that exceptions below date from early 2004 and before and have been obviated by subsequent bulletin rollups and Service Packs. (April 2006) NOTE: MS06-013 (KB912812) has been shown to adversely affect the MediaManager Select Browser Player under Windows XP. (The Prolog Player is unaffected.) It is recommended you do not install this update on systems on which you intend to run the MediaManager Select Browser Player. (April 2006) NOTE: MS06-015 (KB908531) has been shown to adversely affect the Avid DS system. For further info please see the Avid DS support website at http://www3.softimage.com/. (April 2004) NOTE: MS04-011 (KB835732) and MS04-012 (KB828741) have been shown to adversely affect the Unity File Manager under Windows 2000 for MediaNetwork v. 3.3.x and earlier. This issue is resolved with the MN 3.4 File Manager. Installing these security bulletins on an MN 3.3.x File Manager will cause the Unity libraries to fail to load at startup, rendering the entire shared storage system useless. Please do not load these bulletins on a 3.3.x File Manager running under Windows 2000. (October 2003) NOTE: MS03-045 (KB824141) has been shown to adversely affect the following Avid products listed below. To receive the benefits of MS03-045 under Windows XP without the ill effects described below, please download and install Microsoft security bulletin 833509, available on the Avid Technology Customer Support Knowledge Center. Avid DNA editors under Windows XP: If MS03-045 is installed on an Avid DNA editor under Windows XP (SP1 or SP1a), then upon starting the editing application, all available windows in that application open. If this occurs, please apply Microsoft security bulletin 833509, available on the Avid Technology Customer Support Knowledge Center. Note also that this issue is addressed in Windows XP SP2. MediaManager Select Avid Player under Windows XP: If MS03-045 is installed on a system running the MediaManager Select Avid Player, the Avid Player s screen will display grey instead of moving video on attempts to play. (The MediaManager Select Browser Player is unaffected.) If this \occurs, please apply Microsoft security bulletin 833509, available on the Avid Technology Customer Support Knowledge Center. Note also that this issue is addressed in Windows XP SP2. MediaLog v. 20.03, 20.1 and 20.1.1 under Windows XP: If MS03-045 is installed on an Avid DNA editor under Windows XP (SP1 or SP1a), and the user attempts to run the included version of Avid MediaLog, the project selections interface will flicker uncontrollably and prevent bins from opening correctly. If this occurs, please apply Microsoft security bulletin 833509, available on the Avid Technology Customer Support Knowledge Center. Note also that this issue is addressed in Windows XP SP2.

Page 6 of 10 MediaNetwork (v.3.3.x and earlier) File Manager under Windows 2000: If MS03-045 is installed on a MediaNetwork File Manager (MN 3.3.4 or earlier) running under Windows 2000 (SP3 or earlier), then the MediaNetwork libraries will fail to load at boot time, rendering the File Manager and consequently the entire Unity system inoperable. If this occurs, remove Windows security bulletin 824141 using Add/Remove Programs. Note also that this issue is resolved in the MediaNetwork v. 3.4 File Manager under Windows 2000. Please note further that the Windows XP bulletin 833509, available on the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center, does not apply to or alleviate this issue. Appendix 2. Disabling DCOM on the Windows NT File Manager You can disable DCOM. Previously called Network OLE, DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) is a protocol that enables software components to communicate with each other over a network. For additional information, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825750 This will not repair the security hole in the OS, but will close the door and not allow hackers in through this hole: 1.Set the EnableDCOM Value Name to N, a string (REG_SZ) data type at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE. 2. Shut down and restart your computer. Note: You should never disable the RPC service; this will render Unity and much of the Windows platform inoperable. Appendix 3.
