THIS IS TECH Cyber Security CYBER

8.5BN 8.5bn to the Welsh economy 40,000 40,000 people are actively employed within the Digital Economy 3,000 3,000 homegrown and multinational technology operations

T H I S I S C Y B E R Wales is home to a flourishing technology ecosystem. The nation s tech sector is worth an estimated 8.5bn to the Welsh economy and it continues to grow. Over 40,000 people are actively employed within the Digital Economy in Wales with main hubs focused around Cardiff and Newport in the south, Swansea in the west and Wrexham in the north. Our thriving tech ecosystem with its growing supply chain combined with our entrepreneurial universities provides a firm foundation for Cyber companies to thrive. A vibrant innovation community allows start-ups, investors and large corporations to meet and share ideas. Where the market goes, the supporting technology industry follows. Wales is home to over 3,000 homegrown and multinational technology operations, including some of the biggest tech companies, for instance BT, Thales, Qinetiq, Airbus Defence & Space and General Dynamics. 1

THIS IS TECH Cyber Security C O M P O N E N T S Why Wales:- 2 Wales has a broad range of commercial property up to 40% cheaper than comparable space in London Salary costs in Wales are typically 20% cheaper than London and the South East of England Wales offers one of the best financial support incentives in the UK Wales has a world class digital infrastructure Wales has great road, rail and air links to England, Europe and the rest of the world

C O M P A N I E S O P E R A T I N G I N W A L E S Alert Logic, Wolfberry, ITSUS Consulting and Pervade Software are calling the Cardiff capital region home. Wales is working hard to ensure the environment and support is right to enable cyber companies to grow, thrive and develop those innovative products and services to tackle the security challenges that lie ahead. Wales is already home to a growing and dynamic cluster of both large and small cyber security companies and world renowned academic expertise in related homeland security, policing, counter-terrorism and major event security. Wales has emerged as UK s centre for cyber, in fact, the South Wales region has the largest cluster of cyber companies in the UK and is recognised as the prime location for both R&D and the commercialisation of defence and security products and services. 3

THIS IS TECH Cyber Security I think Wales has a tremendous opportunity to continue to attract high growth IT companies to the region. We d encourage other companies to come and locate here. David Howorth Alert Logic 4

A L E R T L O G I C C A S E S T U D Y For tech security giants Alert Logic, the appeal of establishing its European HQ in Cardiff was apparent. It provided the opportunity to develop close ties with the universities of Wales, and the recruitment of its skilled graduates, to meet the growing demands of the business. Some of Cardiff s smartest tech residents are helping to keep millions of people safe around the world. Security giants Alert Logic are based in Houston, but chose the 140-acre Cardiff Central Enterprise Zone as their headquarters from which to meet escalating demand across Europe, and swiftly formed key alliances with the city s universities. Vice-President David Howorth says they had no time to lose. As a young, very fast-growing business, people are at the centre of what we do. When we identified that the universities were producing highly skilled graduates going into careers in IT security and government, we saw that there was an opportunity for businesses like ours to locate here and successfully expand. Part of our initial discussion was about hiring quickly and expanding our team here. Two years into our journey, we have not looked back, thanks to the success we have had in building a highly-skilled and dedicated team in Wales. The team today encompasses a multitude of backgrounds and experience, from doctors of science focused on developing our industry leading platforms, through to graduates starting their careers at Alert Logic. 5

The success we have had in hiring a world class team in Cardiff has allowed us to accelerate our development plans in certain strategic areas, and leveraging our relationships with regional universities has been a critical cornerstone in hiring the right sort of talent. This has included developing specific intern programmes, through to working with universities to support the development of their course programmes in order to ensure better alignment with our requir ements for skilled graduates. Finding a central location so that we could take advantage of everything that Cardiff had to offer was also a key consideration when selecting Wales and Cardiff. With many of our clients and partners located in the South East of England, having fast, reliable transport links to London has been a major advantage. This has allowed us to leverage our facility in Cardiff to help drive our sales engagement with new prospect customers and partners, many of whom will typically visit our facility as part of their decision making process. When compared to other locations that we were considering, Wales is just that much more accessible. Based upon the four or five other locations we looked at, the first impression as a US headquartered business, was that the Welsh Government is committed to developing the IT sector. From our first interaction during the selection process, we have found the government very open to understanding our business needs and providing help and assistance when required, to support the rapid growth of our UK operations. I think Wales has a tremendous opportunity to continue to attract high-growth IT companies to the region. We d encourage other companies to come and locate here. The company as a whole has been growing at 40 per cent year on year more in the UK and the future looks very positive. And Cardiff is a great, vibrant city with lots to enjoy and go and see. It has all the ingredients in terms of talent, location and quality of life to support high-growth businesses like ours. www.alertlogic.com 7

The Academy is a partnership between Cardiff University, Welsh Government and industry leaders to address the shortfall of qualified, industry-ready software engineers. It combines teaching and training in a bespoke commercial / IT environment, developed in close partnership with industry and local businesses. www.cardiff.ac.uk/softwareacademy Welsh Cyber Security Clusters With over 150 members, the North and South Wales Cyber Security Clusters have been formed, under the umbrella of the UK Government supported UK Cyber Security Forum, by industry with the intention to deliver on Wales ambition to become the UK hub for cyber security companies. Welsh Government supported the creation of the South Wales Cyber Cluster in 2013 which has grown to become the largest UK Cyber Cluster and remains an active partner in its ongoing development. Welsh Government also provides direct support to the member companies, both individually and as a cluster. The clusters meet monthly and are networking environments for the growing and dynamic mix of large companies, SMEs and academic expertise with a Cyber interest. www.southwalescyber.net northwalescyber.net 9

THIS IS TECH Cyber Security A C A D E M I C F O C U S Talent is a vital ingredient to any country s success. With innovative programmes such as the National Cyber Security Academy, where students work on live industry projects from day one of their undergraduate degree, and partnerships with tech leaders such as Microsoft at our further education colleges, Wales is producing business ready talent. 3,500 students each year leave our 8 Universities and 16 Further Education colleges in Wales with qualifications in ICT. We pride ourselves on our quality education. We have 30 centres of excellence, 91 departments rated 4 star and above for research and 65 departments listed as excellent for teaching quality. THIS IS TECH Cyber Security Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics The Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics is a new research centre set up to provide worldleading research into the evergrowing problem of cyber security which was launched by Cardiff University and Airbus in April 2017. In tandem with the launch of the centre, Cardiff University has recently been awarded almost 2m in external funding from a range of sources, including UK research councils, industry and government, to launch major new programmes over the next 3 years, aimed at developing cutting-edge machine learning algorithms to detect cyber threats targeting various internet-enabled environments, including online social media to control systems in critical national infrastructure. www.cardiff.ac.uk/research/ explore/research-units/airbuscentre-of-excellence-in-cybersecurity-analytics National Cyber Security Academy (NCSA) The University of South Wales (USW) and Welsh Government have joined forces to launch an innovative project to help address a shortage of cyber security skills and develop the next generation of cyber security experts. The USW's Newport City Campus took their first students in October 2016. www.southwales.ac.uk/courses/ bsc-hons-applied-cybersecurity/2352/national-cybersecurity-academy 12
