Veritas Appliance Hardware Service Procedure Replacing a SAS3 cable in a Veritas storage shelf Document Number: 166 Version: 4.1 (03/05/18) Purpose This document describes the process of replacing the SAS3 cable in the Veritas storage shelf that is connected to a 5240, a 5340, or a 3340 Appliance. Electrical Safety The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards. When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions to prevent personnel injuries or device damage. When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge (ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage. To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations: Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the electrostatically sensitive elements on a board. When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit. High availability (HA) appliance service considerations Attention: A HA or multi-node appliance is serviced in the same manner as a single node appliance. About removing and replacing a storage shelf SAS3 cable This section describes how to remove and replace damaged or faulty Veritas storage shelf SAS3 data cables while the appliance operates. Because of SAS3 cable redundancy, you can replace the damaged or the faulty SAS3 data cables without shutting down the entire appliance system. Review the following: This procedure pertains to the following appliance installations. 1
HSP #166 SAS-3 Cable Replacement For the 5240 Appliance, SAS3 cables are used to connect the 5240 Appliance to the 2U12 49TB Storage Shelves. For the 5340 Appliance, a SAS3 cable is used to connect the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf to an optional Veritas 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf. SAS3 cables also connect multiple 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelves to each other. For the 3340 Appliance, SAS3 cables are used to connect both 3340 Appliance compute nodes to the Veritas 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf. A SAS3 cable is also used to connect the Veritas 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf to the first optional 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf. Additional SAS3 cables also connect multiple 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelves to each other. Remove and replace one SAS3 cable at a time. SAS cable redundancy is designed into the appliance systems. As a result, you can remove and replace one SAS3 cable at a time without turning off the system. The procedures that are specified in this document can be used with the following cable lengths: For the 5240 Appliance, standard 1 meter SAS3 data cables are provided with the 2U12 49TB Storage Shelves. Optional 3 meter SAS3 data cables are also available for use. For the 3340 and 5340 Appliances, two 1 meter SAS3 cables are shipped with each Veritas 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf. Optional 2 meter SAS3 data cables are also available for use. You can remove and replace the SAS3 cables with the appliance in the rack. SAS Activity LEDs indicate the status of a SAS data cable connection. If either the Activity LED is off or the Fault LED is on, you should replace the SAS cable. Verify you have the following items SAS3 data cable HSP #166 SAS-3 Cable Replacement Removing a faulty SAS3 data cable Use the following procedure to remove a faulty SAS3 data cable. To remove a faulty SAS3 data cable Warning: Remove and replace only one SAS3 data cable at a time, or the data transmission may be interrupted. 1 At the rear of the storage shelf, identify the damaged or the faulty SAS3 data cable that needs to be replaced. If either the Activity LED (green) is off or the Fault LED (amber) is on, you should replace the SAS3 cable. If the SAS3 Expansion port Status light is off, you should replace the SAS3 cable. 5
HSP #166 SAS-3 Cable Replacement 2 Label the two SAS3 ports which the faulty SAS3 cable connects to. Note: Be sure to note how the SAS3 cable is installed in the port, blue tab on top or bottom of the cable, before you remove it to ensure the replacement cable is installed in the same manner. 3 Gently pull the blue tab at each end of the faulty SAS3 cable to remove it from the SAS ports. Connecting a replacement SAS3 data cable Use the following procedure to connect the replacement SAS3 data storage cable. To connect a replacement SAS3 data cable 1 Obtain the replacement SAS3 data cable. 2 Gently plug each end of the cable into the SAS ports where you removed the previous faulty cable. Note: Be sure to orient the cable end as the original cable was installed. Use the following images as a guide. 5240 Appliance and a 2U12 29TB Storage Shelf connectors Important: The blue SAS3 cables must be installed with the blue tabs oriented UP and DOWN as shown in the following image of the I/O modules in a 2U12 49TB Storage Shelf below (oval circles). 6
HSP #166 SAS-3 Cable Replacement 3340/5340 Appliance and 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf RAID controller connector Important: The SAS3 cable that connects the SAS3 RAID controller to the first 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf must be installed with the blue tab positioned UNDERNEATH the connector when you connect the cable to the SAS3 Expansion port connector. When replacing the SAS3 cables that are connected to the Expansion Storage Shelves IO modules, install the replacement SAS3 cables with the blue tabs positioned UNDERNEATH the connectors. 3 After the replacement, the following should occur. If they are not, contact the Veritas Technical Support. The Activity LED (green) should be on or flashing, and the Fault LED (amber) should be off. The SAS3 Expansion port LINK LED should be on (green). 7
