What are promotions? A promotion is an item consisting of a picture and text, which links to (promotes) another web page, either on the BBC website, or an external site. When someone clicks on a promotion, they are taken to the promoted web page. They look like this on a TV programme page: And like this on a radio programme page (the description shows as well as the title): Super promos super promos appear on multiple pages (they cascade down the page hierarchy). For example, if you place one on a Brand or Series page, it will also appear on all the Episode pages that belong to that Brand or Series. 2
Promote a BBC programme In the blue bar at the top of ibroadcast, click on Add new, and from the dropdown choose Promotion. You will be taken through four steps to create the promo. Step 1 is What To Promote. 3
There are two choices of what you can promote. Promote a BBC programme promotes pages at bbc.co.uk/programmes. The types of page you can promote are listed brand, series, episode, clip, season or collection. Promote a URL lets you promote any other web page, either a BBC page (one that isn t one of the above types) or a page on an external website. *** This guide is for Promote a BBC programme. There is a separate guide for Promote a URL. To Promote a BBC programme, make sure that option is selected. Find the programme page you want to promote. You can search text and use the Type dropdown box to specify the type of page. But it s probably easier to paste the PID (Programme Identifier) of the page in to the text box. A PID is an eight-character code which identifies a particular page, and you can copy it from the end of the URL of the web page: In this example, the PID is b08g7ttx which is an episode page of In Our Time. Paste the PID in to the Search text box and click the blue search button. 4
ibroadcast shows the programme page which will be promoted: Click the green next button. Step 2 is Where To Display (specifies which page the promo will appear on). 5
Paste in the PID of the programme page where you want this promo to appear, then click the blue search button. ibroadcast shows the page where the promo will appear. In the example above, it is the Sky at Night brand page (home page). ** Super promo if you want this promo to be a super promo (i.e. it will appear on all the pages that belong to this programme brand), tick the box: If you don t tick the box, this will be a standard promo, and will appear only on the page you choose in this step. Click next. 6
Step 3 is Details and Scheduling. The Title and Short synopsis are pre-populated with the title and synposis of the programme being promoted. You can change the text if you need to. Schedule the promotion: You can alter the start date and time to a future time (delayed publish). You can add an end date and time (the promo will stop showing on the page). Leave the end date and time blank to schedule the promo indefinitely. You can tick the All day box to make the promo appear for just one day. Priority: the number assigned here determines the order in which promos will appear on the page. This is optional, as you can drag and drop promos in to the desired order in a later step. Click next. 7
Step 4 is Related Links, and is optional. Click on Add link to add a link to the promo. Remember the promo is a link in itself, so this step is optional. If you choose to add a related link, enter the wording for the related link in the title field and enter the full URL (including the http://) in the URL field. Don t add a short synopsis as it won t display. Click the blue save button to complete the link. 8
Finally, click the green save button to publish the promotion. You will see the programme page where the promotion will appear, with the Media promoted here link (in the left-hand column) already selected. The promoted item is shown. Super promos are labelled brand-wide promotion or series-wide promotion. 9
Re-ordering promos If there are several promos listed on the page, you can re-order them by dragging them in to a new position. Click the blue save order button. 10
Extra functions Editing or removing promos To edit or remove a promotion, in ibroadcast, go to the page it appears on, click on Media promoted here in the left-hand column. Remove: To stop the promo showing on the page, click the stop link. The promo isn t deleted, but is archived in the Past and inactive area. It can be reactivated later if needed. Edit: To edit the promo, click the copy link. You will be taken through the 4 steps again, altering any details as you go. Past and inactive When you stop a promo, it no longer shows on the page. It isn t deleted, but is moved in to the Past and inactive area. To see this area, at the top of the list of promos, click the show all link. 11
The Past and inactive area appears below the list of Live now promos. To make one of these past promos live again, click the copy link. You will be taken through the 4 steps to create a promo again, altering its details as you go. Make sure you amend the scheduled date and time. To hide the Past and inactive list, click the show active link. 12
View promos scheduled at a specific time When viewing the list of promos on a page, you can select a date and time to see which promos will be live at that time. Select the date and time you want to view, and click the blue go button. The date you are viewing shows in the yellow highlighted area. Click reset to current date/time in the yellow area to reset the time to now. If you are seeing promos you don t expect to see, make sure you have the correct date/time selected. 13
