Lucent Technologies CDMA450 Applications Amer El-Nahi CDMA450 Workshop Hong Kong-November, 2004

The Digital Divide In General many Asian & Developing countries the population is typically split 50/50 between major cities and rural provincial areas. Majority of telecom (fixed or wireless) tend to cover the major cities only, because it is too costly to cover low density populated areas like rural areas. Also rural subscribers typically can not afford the expensive telecom services due to high cost of deployment (Capex/Opex). Typically there are international and intranational digital divide in many countries. In summary Rural and Provincial areas are suffering badly and falling behind, affecting fundamental economic growth of many nations. Technology advancements resulting from 3G developments allow for high voice capacity and lower cost networks. 2

The Communication and Technology Vision Information and Communication Technologies seen by various bodies of the international community as being. a bridge between developed and developing countries (DOT Force) a tool for economic and social development (WTDC 1994, Seoul Declaration) an engine for growth (The Missing Link Report, 1984) the central pillar for the construction of a global knowledge-based economy and society (Florianopolis Declaration) an opportunity for countries to free themselves from the tyranny of geography 3

3G Technologies Eliminate Constraints of Existing Data Solutions Previous data solutions are too slow for business applications. Current business applications would require substantial engineering to be effective in the current mobile environment. Existing terminals have limitations for data applications (screen sizes, etc.).
