BlueNote USER S GUIDE

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS To prevent injury and/or damage, take the following precautions: 1 Make sure you keep the antenna away from the mains or high voltage electricity sources. 2 Make sure you keep the Power switch at OFF position when replacing batteries. 3 When replacing batteries, make sure that proper polarity (+or-) is observed. 4 If the unit becomes very hot, turn off the power immediately and consult your BlueNote dealer. 5 Remove the earphones from your ear when turning on the set. The volume may have been set at a high level which could cause hearing damage. 6 Do not drop the unit on the ground or subject to strong shock. 7 Do not attempt to dismantle the unit. 8 Keep the unit away from water or damp environments. 9 Keep away from direct sunlight or excessive heat or humidity. 10 Remove the batteries when you do not use the product for a long time. 11 Do not clean the unit with chemicals such as solvents and alcohol. 12 Use only the Perstel mains adaptor with the BlueNote. This can be obtained from Perstel Ltd. 2

2 3 2.GETTING STARTED 1. Power ON/OFF 1 Slide Power Switch to "ON" position. The display will turn on. BlueNote saves the last station and settings when powered off. When BlueNote is powered on again, it automatically recalls and resumes operation at the last saved status. To turn the unit off, slide the Power Switch to "OFF" position. 2. Antenna Setting In order to maximize receiving performance you may need to adjust antenna length. For optimal reception in Band III the antenna should be fully extended. In strong signal areas it is possible to reduce the antenna length without loss of sound quality. When reception is weak you may need to redirect antenna position for better reception. 3. Volume Control Adjust volume level to a desired position by pressing Volume (+ / -) button. BlueNote has 21 steps of volume control. When the volume control buttons are pressed and held, the volume level will gradually be raised or lowered. 4

3.DAB OPERATION 1. Ensemble Tuning DAB signals are transmitted on frequency channels called "ensembles" and each ensemble will contain several radio stations or services. Some of these services are available only at certain times of the day, such as sports commentary channels. Before BlueNote is tuned to a channel, the centre line on the display will be highlighted, and the channel number will be displayed, for example 12B. On the bottom line "Tuning" is displayed, and the moving arrows will show the progress of tuning. <Turned on - Tuning Mode> <Tuned> When an ensemble is tuned, the ensemble name is displayed on the second line and the name of the service or station selected is on first line. BlueNote will initially tune to the first service of the ensemble. To display and listen to all the services on the ensemble use the ( ) or ( ) buttons to select the required service. Some services are data services, and no audio signal will be heard. The "DATA" icon will be shown on the display in this case. <Service Component ALPHA 1> <Another Service Component> 5

3.DAB OPERATION 2. Automatic Tuning Automatic tuning enables you to scan for available DAB channels in your area. You should extend the antenna fully before this operation. 1 Press the Confirm ( ) button until the second line of the display is highlighted 2 Press ( ) or ( ) for more than 2 seconds untill appears in the tuning icon. <Automatic Tuning Mode> <Tuned - Back to Normal Mode> 3 The unit will scan the DAB channels up or down and will stop on the first channel found with radio services. 4 To scan for another channel, repeat steps 1 and 2. 5 If no services are found the scan will stop when the unit has attempted to tune all the channels. Details of all DAB services available and the coverage in your area are available on the internet at: http://www.digitalradionow.com. See Appendix 1 for the UK channel allocation. 3. To change to receive another ensemble Press the Confirm ( ) button until the second line of the display is highlighted. Use the ( ) or ( ) button to move the channel up or down. You need to allow about 3 seconds on a channel to give BlueNote time to acquire and decode the signal. 6

3.DAB OPERATION 4. Displaying Other Service Information When BlueNote is tuned to a radio service, the bottom line of the display will show additional information. Normally the display shows scrolling text called DLS which may give programme information, contact information or news. Other information can also be shown: Program type: news, music etc. The data bit rate of the service Clock time (if transmitted) DAB mode information To change the information display : 1 Press the Confirm ( ) button to highlight the third line of the display. 2 Press ( ) or ( ) to see other available information. 5. PRESET and MANUAL tuning BlueNote is designed to receive the full range of frequencies allocated to DAB radio from 174-240 MHz - a total of 41 channels. However in the UK and most countries, only a small number of the total channels are used at present. In PRESET mode only the 7 channels now used in the UK are tuned or scanned. In MANUAL mode, the BlueNote can be tuned to any of the 41 channels, so if new multiplexes are introduced, it will always be possible to tune them by switching to MANUAL mode (see page 8). Depending on your locality, not all of the channels in PRESET mode will carry services. The list of channels is given in Appendix 1. 7

4.BlueNote SETTING 1. Mode change & Settings BlueNote has a MENU features which lets you change the settings such as the display and tuning mode. To change the BlueNote settings, press the MENU ( ) button. The Menu will be displayed. These menu options are available: 1. Preset Tune 2. Manual Tune 3. Backlight 4. No key operation is accepted. 3 To deactivate Hold function, press HOLD button ( ) for more than 2 seconds. HOLD icon disappears and key operation works normally. <Button Hold Activated> 3. Battery and Mains Operation BlueNote displays the battery capacity on the display. When battery icon blinks you need to replace the batteries immediately. When the batteries are exhausted the display will show "Low Battery" and the DAB function will not operate. BlueNote can be used with an optional mains adaptor. This adaptor must provide a regulated supply of 3V at 500mA. The use of unregulated supplies or different voltages may cause permanent damage to the unit. A suitable mains adaptor can be purchased from Perstel Limited. To connect, plug the adaptor into the socket on the side of the unit. The internal batteries are disconnected when the power adaptor is plugged in. Rechargeable batteries may be used with the BlueNote. An external charger is required. For optimum use, Nickel Metal Hydride(NiMH) types are recommended. 10
