1 St John s Curriculum Overview Year 8 Introduction Subject title Mathematics During the course of the year students will build upon their knowledge Setting arrangements Time allowance each fortnight Students placed in sets based on prior attainment in Year 7 In each band there will be sets 1 to 4 (or 5) 6 hours and learning from Year 7 from the following units of study: Number, geometry, data handling and algebra. Area and Perimeter Area and perimeter of 2D shapes, including compound shapes Circumference and area of a circle Surface Area and Volume Surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids and right angled prisms Surface area and volume of cones, spheres and pyramids Pythagoras and Trigonometry Pythagoras to calculate missing side lengths in right angled triangles Trigonometric ratios to calculate missing side lengths and angles in right angled triangles Angles Calculating angles in triangles and quadrilaterals Drawing and calculating bearings Calculating interior and exterior angles in polygons Circle Theorems Identifying angles in simple circle theorems will be placed on SMHW by the class teacher

Describe in symbols or words the rule for a quadratic sequence Algebra Basics Use letter symbols to represent unknown numbers or variables Simplify linear algebraic expressions by collecting like terms Multiply a single term over a brackets Solving equations Constructing and solving linear equations with integer coefficients with unknowns on one side. Construct and solve linear equations with integer coefficients where the unknown is on either or both sides, with and without brackets. Graphs, Charts and Diagrams Extract ad interpret information presented in tables, lists and bar charts and pictograms Interpret diagrams and graphs and draw conclusions Create and interpret for suitable data: pie charts, steam and leaf diagrams and scatter graphs Draw the line of best fit on a scatter graph and use it Describe the correlation a scatter graph shows Draw frequency diagrams for grouped continuous data Recognise when a graph is misleading and explain why Calculate the lower and upper quartiles for a data set and hence find the interquartile range Construct a box plot (discrete data only) Resources Recommended for Revision and where they are available: GCP Workbook and revision guide available to purchase from the school library maths.co.uk login: graham password: scalene Homework 1 x 30 minutes each week All homework will be set through Show My Homework Assessments: Students will have 6 assessments throughout the year, that will be delivered and marked by class teachers.
