Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Introduction This document describes the new features and enhancements that make up the T7.0 release and differentiate it from the latest TrapTester 6.1xx releases. T7.0 is distributed as a full release and cannot be installed over a TrapTester 6.1xx installation as a patch. For a more detailed description of the new features please refer to the relevant sections in the T7 user-manual. Important Notes: 1) T7 license feature versions are 7.0. T7.0 will not function with a TrapTester 6.1 license. Please send T7 license requests to support@badleys.co.uk. 2) T7 uses FlexNet for its licensing. The installation will include the version of the FlexNet license manager daemon. 3) Once installed, T7 will need to run a database upgrade on existing TrapTester projects. Please backup you projects before using them with T7. Once a project has been upgraded it will not be accessible using TrapTester 6.1 or earlier. 4) After a project has been upgraded, the volume editor default shortcut file (defining hotkeys) will be replaced with a more fully featured set of hotkeys and shortcuts. The original shortcut definition file will be renamed to "default.tt6". February 2015 Page 1
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 New Look And Feel The most striking difference between TrapTester 6 and T7 is the new colour-scheme and button icons. This new look and feel is adopted throughout all of the T7 menus, windows and applications. An example of the new look and feel is shown in the image of the Database Explorer below. Page 2 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES New Control Menu Layout The Data and Project items in the T7 control menu have been altered to include some additional options and given a new layout. The Project->Start-up options submenu now has the following new items which allow the user to control which windows and pop-ups are displayed when T7 is first started: Console initially visible: [default ON] if disabled, the T7 console window will start up in an iconic state. Show splash screen: [default ON] if disabled, the T7 splash screen will be disabled. Perform version check: [default ON] if disabled the T7 version check will be disabled. NOTE: The "Project deadwood check" and "Project offset check" options now operate across all projects. February 2015 Page 3
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The Data menu item has been completely updated to include access to all of the import and export options that were previously available only through the Database Explorer tool. The Data menu is now a single point of access for all data import and export though the same options are still accessible via the Database Explorer. The Data menu is now organised according to the target/source system of interest making it much easier for a user to find the relevant option. Note that the "Configure Data Links " Option is only relevant for the OpenWorks and IESX systems. Transferring data to and from Petrel, DecisionSpace and T7 does not require any pre-configuration. Page 4 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Volume Editor Module Simplification The Volume Editor Modules have been renamed and amalgamated to simplify the overall user experience. The names have been altered to be more work-flow oriented and modules have been merged where their functionality has overlapped. The following table illustrates how the modules have changed between TrapTester 6 and T7. TT 6 Module Name Basemap Seismic CubeXplorer Surface Well EarthGrid FaultED T7 Module Name Surveys & Grids Interpret Model & Map Geomodel Fracture Prediction The T7 Volume Editor also has a new "Home" tab which contains general functions such as session management and access to some of the general Volume Editor functionality. The new module system is mirrored in the Style Editor and Data Manager windows. TrapTester 6 Interface New Home tab contains basic Volume Editor controls Quick access buttons to Data Manager, Style Editor, Undo & Redo Quick access to active horizon and active fault T7 Interface February 2015 Page 5
Volume Editor Shortcut Toolbar NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The Volume Editor Shortcut Toolbar (on the right hand side of each viewer) has been totally re-vamped for T7. It is expected that the new system will be of benefit to both new and seasoned TrapTester users. The available content of the toolbar is controlled by the shortcut editor and the currently loaded shortcut definitions file. When T7 is used to open a TrapTester 6 project for the first time, a new default shortcut definition file (called "default") will be added to the project. This default set of shortcuts contains in excess of 300 entries which permits the user to have direct visual access to about 95% of the Volume Editor's context-based menu functions. The main improvements over the TrapTester 6 implementation of this toolbar are: the toolbar buttons are all icon-based there are many more items covering about 95% of the context menu functions there are three columns of buttons in the toolbar each button has a tooltip visible as the mouse pointer moves over it the toolbar buttons are arranged into collapsible groups the toolbar buttons (and their groups) are context (selection) sensitive the shortcut editor is directly accessible from toolbar buttons The content of the toolbar at any given time will reflect what options are available in the viewer according to what data is currently loaded and what is selected in the viewer. In general, when using the default set of shortcuts, the content of the toolbar will largely represent all of the options that would normally be available using the right mouse button pop-up menu. The image below shows the typical toolbar configuration with nothing selected. Toolbar button groups may be collapsed by simply clicking on the group title button (e.g. Hide). A collapsed group will remain in this state until it is opened with a further click on the group button. The collapsed state of button groups is saved in the Volume Editor session. Many of the toolbar buttons also have a hotkey assignment. The hotkey assignment is shown as part of the tooltip text when the mouse is moved over a toolbar button. By holding the shift key down when clicking on a toolbar button the shortcut editor will be opened with the selected shortcut highlighted. This can be a quick way to use the shortcut editor to remove or alter the position of an item within the toolbar or to change its hotkey assignment. Page 6 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Volume Editor Home Tab Quick Access A "Quick Access" facility has been added to enable the Home Tab Session and Controls options to be accessed even when the Home Tab is not the currently selected tab. This new functionality is presented in the form of a house icon to the left of the Home Tab label. This icon has no effect when the Home Tab is the currently selected tab. Once a different tab is selected the house icon becomes sensitive such that if the mouse is moved over it, a menu will automatically pop-up providing immediate access to the Session and Controls options. The following images show the various states of the Quick Access system. 1. Home Tab selected: House icon insensitive 2. Home Tab not selected: House icon sensitive 3. Home Tab Quick Access menu (popped up when mouse placed over house icon) The principle of this facility is to make the Home tab Session and Controls options available even if the Home tab is not the one currently selected. It is now just a one click operation to save the current session, for example, when the active tab is something other than the Home tab. February 2015 Page 7
Volume Editor Viewer Colour Bars NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 A new system has been introduced to permit the display of colour-bars within the Volume Editor viewer windows for a number of different data-types. There are currently nine different colour-bars (one per data-type) that can be displayed within each viewer window. Each colour-bar can be positioned interactively within the viewer and it can be switched between horizontal or vertical modes. Colour-bars can be switched on or off using the Shortcut Toolbar options or the equivalent options within the right mouse button pop-up menu (Viewer->Colour-bars). Colour-bars can be displayed for the following data-types: Fault surface Horizon surface Fracture network Well curve Seismic (section) Seismic (cube) Cell-grid Cell-fault Fracture Prediction (FaultED) surface The image below shows the Fault Surface colour-bar in a vertical orientation showing the depth attribute for a currently loaded fault. The shortcut Toolbar can also be seen to the right. The Viewer group of shortcuts showing the colour bar controls contains a button to switch off the Fault colour-bar. Page 8 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES When enabled, each colour bar becomes sensitive to the objects that it relates to. For example, when the "Fault Surface" colour-bar is switched on it will initially display "no data". When a fault surface is selected in the viewer the colour-bar will automatically link up with that object and display the colours for the property currently displayed upon that fault (if any). The colour-bar will then automatically update if the displayed property for the linked fault is changed or the colour-map for the displayed property is altered. Each time a different fault surface is selected the colour-bar will link up and update according to the last one selected. Colour bar control buttons Each viewer colour-bar possesses three control buttons which appear as the mouse moves over it. These buttons provide actions to: change the orientation, remove the colour-bar and to change its lock status. When a colour-bar is locked, it will no longer automatically update when the property or colours associated with its linked object are changed. The visibility, colourmap and position of the colour-bars is retained as part of the Volume Editor session. February 2015 Page 9
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Colour-map Unit Domains T7 introduces unit domains to all colour-maps. Whenever a colour-bar is displayed or being edited it will now also display the units of the data that it represents. The units for each of the supported unit domains are controlled from the Project Parameters window. The most important implication of this update is that the data range associated with the colourmap is now stored in T7 in internal units and displayed in the interface in the current external units (controlled in Project Parameters) for the assigned unit domain. This means that if the user changes the display units for a particular unit domain that there is no effect on the display of any data using a colourmap with the same domain assignment; the only change is to the displayed data range and its units. When a TrapTester 6 project is upgraded for T7 all of the display-method colour-maps are analysed to see which attribute they are being used against. It is this attribute association that is used during the upgrade process to determine the unit domain assignment for the existing colour-maps that exist within a project. Implications and changes in the Display Method Editor One of the effects of this new feature can be seen in the Display Method Editor. In the old system, when an attribute was selected, all of the colour maps were shown regardless of their relevance. For example, when the depth attribute was selected, it would be possible to choose a V-shale, or permeability colourmap. In the new system, the only colour maps that will be shown in the list will be those that share the same unit domain as the attribute. Also, when creating a new continuous colourmap in the Display Method Editor, it will assume the domain of the currently selected attribute. The unit domain is displayed in the title of the colourmap editor window and the units are displayed alongside the data range text (see image below). Page 10 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Seismic Colour-maps In TrapTester 6.1 and earlier, the display of seismic data within the Volume Editor was controlled through the Style Editor settings. This meant that it was difficult to display the correct colours for seismic data sourced from different volumes as there was only a single colour-map for seismic sections for each viewer that could be set from the style. It was possible to apply the style-colourmap to individual sections but this information was difficult to manage and was not retained as part of the saved sessions. In T7, the seismic colourmaps now belong to the Seismic Access Definition objects that are used to access seismic data for a given seismic data volume. The Style Editor no longer contains a means of directly editing the seismic colourmap. In place of the old colourmap interface in the Style Editor is a button that pops up the "Global Colourmap Control" utility. This utility is now simply a proxy interface for editing any of the Seismic Access Definition colourmaps. The new system more naturally ties the colourmap and the seismic amplitude range to the seismic data volume it relates to. Seismic data can now be displayed from a host of sources (each one having its own colourmap and amplitude range) without having to make any changes in the Style Editor. February 2015 Page 11
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 With the amplitude range toggle switched off, the seismic colourmap range is set to "auto". In this mode the colourmap will be scaled to the range of the native seismic datatype: 8 bit integer: -128 to bit integer: to bit integer: to bit float: -huge to +huge Note: when the seismic amplitude range in the Access definition is adjusted in any way, all seismic data displayed using the same Access definition will automatically be reloaded. This will have a noticeable effect in the Volume Editor if there are large volumes of seismic data loaded that depend on the colourmap range. If the colours alone are altered then this will be reflected in any seismic display without requiring a reload of the seismic data. Clicking on the colour bar in the editor will pop up the standard T7 colourmap editor where the colours and the data range can be adjusted as required. The button to the right of the colour bar will pop up a movable copy of the colour bar that can be placed anywhere on the screen and will persist until it is closed or the main application has been exited. Page 12 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Well Data Colourmaps In a similar vein to the relocation of the seismic colourmaps, the Well Attribute Definition objects now also contain a colourmap to represent the display of the data. This improves upon the method adopted in previous TrapTester versions whereby a single colourmap in the Volume Editor's Style Editor was used to represent any number of different well attributes. The new system simply means that once the colourmap has been assigned to the Well Attribute Definition that no further adjustments to display styles in the Volume Editor for that particular data should be required. Well Attribute Definition editor Clicking on the colour bar in the editor will pop up the standard T7 colourmap editor where the colours and the data range can be adjusted as required. The button to the right of the colour bar will pop up a movable copy of the colour bar that can be placed anywhere on the screen and will persist until the main application has been exited. February 2015 Page 13
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 To complement this improvement, the loading of wells and their log data in the Volume Editor has been simplified. The Attribute selection in the Well Data Manager has been removed; this has been effectively moved into the Style Editor where the user simply chooses which attribute to display on the loaded wells in a viewer or on a selected well in a viewer. The colours used to represent the attribute data are then simply taken from those defined in the Well Attribute Definition. If required, the Well Attribute Definition can be edited directly from the list display in the Style Editor. New well curve style control in Volume Editor Page 14 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Enhanced Cell-Grid Property Modelling Previous implementations of property modelling (in TrapTester6) were limited to layer-bylayer operations. The old system has been greatly extended in T7 so that all geostatistical functionality (apart from collocated co-kriging) can now be implemented on a volume basis either in the topological or model coordinate reference frame. Furthermore, in addition to the existing statistical toolkit (average, percentile etc.), a number of geometric analytical tools are now available, measuring connectivity and net:gross for a given geocellular attribute. Along with the new functionality, a number of new modelling tools have also been added. The two main features are the transformation modelling tool and the stochastic facies modelling (SFM) tool. The transformation modelling tool enables the user to model arbitrarily defined - local trends or scaling within any region of the geocellular model. The resulting models can be used in conjunction with other modelling methods (e.g. SFM and SGS) to produce complex geobody and attribute geometries. The SFM tool, implements a multiple point statistic method, which requires only 2D images that can be drafted up in any drawing application. The images must be grey-scale and typically should capture stationary, sedimentological motifs (commonly informed by conceptual sedimentary models); well data (facies attribute codes) from intersecting wells act as control data. February 2015 Page 15
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 DecisionSpace Data-Link New to T7 is an additional data link allowing export from Landmark DecisionSpace Data may be exported directly to a T7 project over a network link, or indirectly via a file: Export from DecisionSpace Import to T7 Page 16 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES The Seismic tab allows export of 2D and 3D surveys, lines, navigation and seismic volumes. The interface allows the volume data range to be specified or automatically obtained from the data: The Interpretation tab allows export of 2D and 3D horizon data, and fault segments: February 2015 Page 17
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Finally, the Well tab allows the export of well trajectories, time/depth curves, well logs, and well picks (fault and horizon). Page 18 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Multi-Object Editing By selecting multiple objects of the same type in the Database Explorer or in any list view that supports object editing it is now possible to apply simple bulk changes to all of the items selected. The multi-object editor tool can be used to set the colours for all items to a single colour or to adjust their names by removing, replacing or adding a suffix, prefix or matching text. When searching for text within names for removal or replacement and for when adding text, the search and/or replacement string can contain any of the following special variables which will be substituted with a sequential value for each item selected. Variable Name Description $COUNT A numerical value starting at 1 $UID The UID of the object being operated on $INDEX The index of the object being operated on $ALPHA An uppercase character starting at "A" $alpha A lowercase character starting at "a" Having applied the multi-object name and/or colour alterations to a set of objects, it is possible to revert the changes by clicking on the "Revert" button. Once the multi-object edit dialogue is closed the option to revert the changes is lost. Note, when making changes to object names, the sequence of the objects in the original list may adjust if the items are sorted alphabetically. February 2015 Page 19
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 In the following example, five horizons have been selected in the Database Explorer tool. The multi-object edit window can be seen on the right. By default, the "Set Colours" and "Edit Names" toggles are both off. The example shows how each of the horizon names which begin with an increasing uppercase alphabetic character can be systematically edited. The editing functions are set to remove the sequential uppercase alphabetic character (using the $ALPHA substitution string) followed by an underscore at the beginning of each name and to add the text "Horizon-" followed by an increasing number (using the $COUNT substitution string) followed by "-". The results are shown in the cutout below the main picture. Page 20 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Basic Cell-Model Volumetrics A new function has been added in the Volume Editor Geomodelling module to enable the computation of both the entire visible cell volume and geometrically connected cell volumes for any displayed cell-model. Both methods of volume computation will exclude any cells that are filtered out via the cell-selection tool and via display method filtering. When a cell-model is selected there are two options which appear in both the right mouse button pop-up menu and in the default configuration of the shortcut toolbar: Shortcut Toolbar controls Right Mouse Button pop-up menu options Visible Volume: this will compute and immediately report back the total volume of all of the currently displayed cells. The total volume is displayed in the information panel at the bottom of the viewer and also in the Volume Editor messages window. Connected Volume: this option will enter a mode whereby the user may click on any cell in the selected cell-grid. Upon selection of a cell, all of the geometrically connected cells will highlight in the viewer and their volume will be computed and displayed in the information panel at the bottom of the viewer and also in the Volume Editor messages window. February 2015 Page 21
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Extended Well Symbol Set (& Horizon-based Display) T7 is provided with a new and extended set of vector well symbols. An extension to the Volume Editor's horizon raw data style allows the well horizon picks to be annotated according to the well symbol and/or the well name. The new list of well symbols is shown below. Extended Well Symbol Set Page 22 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES The Volume Editor's Style Editor for the Model & Map module (formerly the Surface and Well modules) has been adjusted and extended to manage the display of the well symbols at the location of the well horizon picks. This new option is included in the Raw Horizon data display options. The following image shows the result of the above style settings together with a Horizon contour map. February 2015 Page 23
Improved ASCII Well Loader NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 T7 has a new ASCII well trajectory importer that enables multiple wells to be loaded at the same time. The well trajectory importer also comes with an extended file format editor; this highly configurable interface makes working with complex file formats and format headers much easier. The new importer also enables the import of well data defined in polar coordinates (azimuth and plunge) as well as standard Cartesian configurations. New well trajectory importer interface The new well importer replaces the TrapTester6 implementation and may be accessed directly from the main T7 control menu: Data->ASCII->Import->Well trajectories or from the Database Explorer's import menu. Page 24 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Improved 3-D Horizon Autotracker The 3-D horizon autotracker, now part of the "Interpret" Module in the Volume Editor, has been improved in a number of ways. These are described in more detail below. 1) Optional use of polygonal constraints This new option permits the autotracker to operate with in a user-defined polygonal region. For more information, see the section below titled "Shapes - A New General Purpose Object Type". 2) User control for fault mask width When using fault surfaces to constrain the autotracker, the default fault-mask width is 0. This results in the narrowest gap within the auto tracked horizon. Increasing the fault-mask width effectively makes the fault gap wider by the given number of traces. February 2015 Page 25
3) Tracking within a user-defined amplitude window NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 It is now possible to constrain the autotracker only to track horizon data where the amplitude falls within a given range. This amplitude range, called the minimum and maximum tracking amplitude, is also applied to the seed points (after snapping adjustment, if applied); any seed point whose corresponding amplitude value lies outside the specified range will be discarded. The tracking amplitude values are specified as 8 bit amplitudes. These can be queried from the seismic data display by using Shift-MB1. 4) Option to set the default control parameters This button can simply be used to reset the default auto-tracking control parameters. Page 26 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Improved 2-D Horizon Autotracker The T7 2-D horizon autotracker has been updated so that its controls and tracking procedures use the same system as the existing the 3-D horizon autotracker. The 2-D horizon autotracker operates by the user loading a section with seismic data and entering the 2-D horizon auto tracking mode. Having done this, the user simply clicks on the section to initiate tracking from that point. Following this with a further click to the left or right of the initial point will initiate tracking between the two points with the current tracking parameters. A line showing the segment of tracked data between the two points will be displayed on the section. The first two points define the direction for all subsequent points; it is not permitted to reverse the order of digitisation unless the points picked so far are first backtracked/undone with mouse button 2. The 2-D autotracking parameters can be accessed through the "Interpret" module's Sections menu. Cross Correlation Controls These controls are exactly the same as the 3-D autotracker counterparts. Tracking modes The 2-D horizon autotracker can use one or two points (picked by the user) per tracking segment as seed points. 1 point mode: When working with just one seed point, tracking will proceed from the first point picked or the end of the previous tracked segment in a direction toward the next point picked by the user, though this next point only controls the distance along the line to track. In this mode, only the first point needs to be on the correct event in the seismic data. February 2015 Page 27
NEW FEATURES Version point mode: When working with two seed points, tracking will proceed (in the order of highest tracking confidence) in opposite directions from both. The autotracker will attempt to track all the space between the two seed points according to the autotracker parameters. This mode can be used to allow the tracking to jump across faults by ensuring successive pick points (seeds) are picked on different sides of the faults. It is important in this mode that each point picked is on the correct/same event in the seismic data otherwise the tracking will jump from one event to another at a point where the tracking confidence is at a minimum. The following images show the differences between the 1 point and 2 point tracking modes. Here the user has clicked on 3 points to track an event across a fault point tracking mode point tracking mode In the first case, the tracking has successfully followed the event from the 1st point and then continues to track what it sees as the same event across the fault from point 2 to 3. The tracking terminates short of the 3rd point because the correlation value falls below the minimum acceptable value. In the second case using 2 point mode, the tracking has successfully followed the event from the 1st point. The user has selected the 2nd point on the other side of the fault to continue the tracking of the same event. The tracking then successfully follows this event to the 3rd point. Page 28 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Shapes: A New General Purpose Object Type T7 introduces a new general purpose object type that is referred to as a "Shape". Shapes are stored in the T7 database and may be used to represent any arbitrary data that can be formed by (A) sets of points, (B) poly-lines, (C) closed polygons, (D) tri-meshes. Shapes are generally designed as display-only objects and may be thought of as culture data. In T7 however, closed polygon shapes can be used to constrain certain processes such as horizon gridding, 3-D horizon auto tracking and when editing horizon raw data; these processes and uses of shapes are explained in the following sections. Shapes may be grouped into lists for the convenience of loading and managing. They can be created in the following ways: Go-CAD tri-mesh import Manual creation in the Volume Editor Surveys & Grids module Manual creation in the Volume Editor Horizon Gridding tool Manual creation in the Volume Editor 3-D horizon autotracker Conversion of an horizon or fault point-set Conversion of an horizon or fault tri-mesh Conversion of an intersection polygon Conversion of a fault segment The conversion processes indicated above are implemented within the Volume Editor and can operate on a multiple selection of objects. When an object is converted into a shape the original object data will remain intact - the shape is merely created from the originating object data. Shapes may be managed within the Database Explorer tool though they cannot be created there. The shape-editor window permits the setting of the name and colour. The other properties cannot be edited in this view. A preview of the shape geometry is also presented in a map-style orientation. February 2015 Page 29
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The following image shows the Shapes as presented in the Database Explorer. Note that the list of shapes in the tree shows the shape name and its type enclosed in brackets. These images show the shape editor for the various types of shape object. Page 30 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Shapes can also be managed through the Volume Editor's Surveys & Grids module where there is a new interface to manage the loading and unloading of Shapes and their display style (in the Style Editor). Style Editor Data Manager February 2015 Page 31
Polygon Shape Constraints in 3-D Autotracker NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The 3-D horizon autotracker (now in the "Interpret" module) can now make use of a closed polygon Shape object in order to constrain the aerial extent of the auto-tracked horizon. A mode can be set so that the auto tracking can be restricted to be on the inside or on the outside of the polygon. The new user interface containing the polygon selection is shown below. Note, if a clip polygon is specified it will be used to isolate both the seed points and the auto-tracked horizon data. As a polygon shape is selected from the drop-list it will be automatically loaded and displayed via the shape manager in the "Surveys & Grids" module (provided the viewer style is set to show polygon shapes). A shape loaded in this manner will be automatically unloaded if the list selection is changed or if the 3-D autotracker manager window is closed. Page 32 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Using the "Create" button (or the create option in the " " menu from the Shape drop-list) it is possible to manually digitise a new polygon shape in the currently active viewer. This process involves first specifying the shape colour and name in the window that is popped up and then digitising points on any objects that are visible in the Active Viewer. Polygon shapes that are created in this manner will be automatically selected in the drop-list. The "Create Shape" window permits the name and colour of the shape to be defined. The shape-type should be left set to "Polygon". The polygon can now be digitised by clicking on any displayed objects in the Active Viewer Workflow to create a new Polygon Shape February 2015 Page 33
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The picture below shows the results of auto-tracking a horizon within the bounds of a clip polygon. In this example the extents of the autotracker to the south and west are controlled by size of the seismic volume (white dotted line). The purple dashed line is the clip polygon that was used. Autotracked Data Seed Lines Clip Polygon Seismic Volume Extent Example of 3-D Horizon Autotracker used with a Polygon Shape Page 34 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Polygon Shape Constraints in Horizon Gridding Tool In the same way that the 3-D autotracker has been extended to use polygon shapes to control the extent of the autotracked horizons and input seed points, the Horizon gridding tool has also been extended so that it too can use polygon shapes to control the aerial extent of data independently on input and on output. Clip polygon selection for Horizon Gridding Tool input data The "Mode" option can be set to "inside" or "outside" to include data that lies only on the inside or only on the outside of the chosen polygon. February 2015 Page 35
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The input data and output data can be independently clipped; a different polygon may be selected and a different mode may be set. Clip polygon selection for Horizon Gridding Tool output data Similarly to the 3-D Horizon Autotracker, as polygons are selected, they are loaded for display (style permitting). Using the "Create" button (or the create option in the " " menu from the Shape drop-list) it is possible to manually digitise a new Polygon Shape in the currently active viewer. Page 36 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES The picture below shows an example of the Horizon gridding tool used to restrict the gridding input and output to the inside of a Polygon Shape. Example of Horizon Grid Tool used with a Polygon Shape February 2015 Page 37
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Polygon Shape Constraints in Horizon Volume Utility Polygon Shapes can now be used to constrain the aerial extent in which the Horizon Volume Utility can be used to modify the content of Horizon Data Volumes. Polygon Shape selection in the Horizon Volume Utility Note: the Horizon Volume Utility is not integral to the Volume Editor; it does not facilitate the interactive creation of polygon shapes and nor does it display the selection within the Volume Editor's Active Viewer. Page 38 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Polygon Shape Constraints in Horizon Editing The following raw horizon data editing functions, that operate on an interactively digitised polygonal region, can now be switched so that they operate on an existing Polygon Shape selected from a list: Editing Function Shortcut toolbar icon Area smooth (outside) Area smooth (inside) Area interpolate (outside) Area interpolate (inside) Area delete (outside) Area delete (inside) Mode switching Shortcut toolbar icon Area mode: PICK Area mode: SHAPE The mode of these editing functions can be switched using the Right Mouse Button Popup Menu options or the equivalent shortcut toolbar button: Horizon-> Set Area mode: PICK, and Horizon-> Set Area mode: SHAPE. When the "Set Area mode: PICK" option is selected, all of the Horizon raw area data editing functions will use the interactive polygon digitisation procedure. When the "Set Area mode: SHAPE" option is selected, all of the Horizon raw data area editing functions will use the Polygon Shape list selection procedure (image below). February 2015 Page 39
Horizon Interpretation Mode (Re-pick) NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 A new Horizon interpretation mode has been added to T7. As the name suggests the Re-pick horizon editing mode requires that horizon data already exists on a given section. It is for this reason that this mode does not rely upon the currently active horizon. This makes this method of editing particularly fast when editing multiple horizons on a single section. When the mode is entered, the user simply digitises points on the section; the first point click must be close to existing horizon data and this point determines which horizon will be edited. Upon committing these points with a click of the right mouse button the new data will be added to (or replace) the existing horizon data. Horizon Re-pick pop-up menu option and shortcut toolbar button Page 40 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Enhanced Fault Segment Tip Functions The first and last points on fault segments can be assigned as tip points that can be treated as having zero throw when computing fault surface attributes. Prior to T7, tip points could only be edited upon seismic sections. This functionality has now been extended into the "Model & Map" module (formerly the Surface and Well modules). When fault segments are loaded through the "Model & Map" module, the tip points may be edited using options in the right mouse button pop-up menu and the current state of the tip points can be visualised by setting the fault segment point size appropriately in the Style Editor. Upper tip flags On Lower tip flags On Lower tip flags Off Fault segment Tip editing options As with fault segments displayed on a seismic section, when the fault segment display style is set appropriately (node size greater than zero), tip points that are flagged "On" are displayed as open diamonds, whereas tip points that are flagged "Off" are displayed as filled diamonds. February 2015 Page 41
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Polygon Smoothing A new option has been added to the set of polygon editing functions available in the Volume Editor to apply smoothing to fault/horizon intersection polygons. The level of smoothing is controlled by new options in the Project Parameters window. Polygon with smoothing applied The new smoothing option is available both in the right mouse button pop-up menu and in the shortcut toolbar. The control options in the Project Parameters window are shown below. Page 42 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Automated Polygon Snapping Controls Additional controls have been added to the Fault/Horizon intersection modelling tab in the Project Parameters window to help control the way in which edited polygons are snapped both to branch lines and fault tip-lines and the way in which fault throw is computed in the vicinity of branch lines. Branch-line snap distance (used when hand-editing polygons and for throw calculation) Under certain circumstances controlled by the branch-line trim distance, hand edited polygons will snap to the branch-line in a tidy and geologically meaningful way. In the image below each sequence of points (yellow, green and blue) represents the hand edited locations of the vertices of a polygon on a fault surface, in the vicinity of a branchline. The red line indicates the location of the branch line. no vertices fall within the snap distance: the polygon remains unprocessed. One or more vertices lie within the snap distance on the up thrown aside of the branch line; the polygon is "snapped" to the branch-line on the upthrown side only. One or more vertices lie within the snap distance on both sides of the branch-line; the polygon is "snapped" to the branch-line on both sides Branch-line snap distance applied to hand edited polygons February 2015 Page 43
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 This next image illustrates how the branch-line snap distance is used to improve the calculation of the fault throw attribute in the vicinity of a branch-line. There are no gaps along the length of either wall of a polygon, so in the vicinity of a branch-line a calculated throw value can be erroneously low. This effect can be particularly acute for un-snapped, hand-edited lines. To mitigate against this, polygons that extend into the snap-region are clipped before the throw calculations are made. Throw is then interpolated into the snap-region from uncompromised information. Note, in practice, at the time of the calculations the information from the left and right hand side of a branch-line are treated completely separately. Branch-line snap distance applied to throw attribute calculations Page 44 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Tip-line snap distance & Tip-line angle threshold (used when hand-editing polygons) Under certain circumstances controlled by the tip-line snap distance AND the tip-line [plunge] angle threshold, hand-edited polygons will "snap" to the tip-line in a tidy and geologically meaningful way. In the image below, each sequence of points (yellow, green and blue) represents the hand-edited locations of the vertices of a polygon on a fault surface in the vicinity of a tipline. Vertices fall inside of the snap-distance where the plunge of the tip-line is less than the threshold value: the polygon remains unchanged One or more vertices lie within the snap-distance AND the plunge of the tip-line is greater than the threshold value: the polygon is "snapped" to the tip-line No vertices fall within the snapdistance: the polygon remains unchanged Tip-line snap distance & angle threshold applied to hand edited polygons February 2015 Page 45
Improved 3-D Seismic Volume Merge NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The 3-D Seismic Volume Merge utility within the BGL Volume Manager has been improved so that it can operate on a geographic XYZ basis rather than just on a row/column/z basis. The new mode permits the merging of volumes of different orientations and/or geographic location (provided that there is some geographic overlap). Page 46 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Fracture Prediction (FaultED) Scenario Locking T7 introduces locking to the fault panelling and elastic modelling stages of the Fracture Prediction (formerly FaultED) system. Once a fracture prediction scenario is locked it ensures that both the fault panelling and elastic modelling stages are shielded from updates either within the scenario itself or to any of the dependent inputs that would otherwise outdate the modelling results. The locking allows the user to make alterations to scenario parameters that affect only the attribute generation stage with the confidence that any other changes to any of the scenario dependencies will not force a rerun of the fault panelling or elastic modelling stages which can be very time-consuming. The new modelling status window shows the current status of the three modelling stages and indicates (with an icon) if the panelling and elastic modelling stages are locked. The lock state is controlled by the Lock/Unlock on Apply toggle button. The Fracture Prediction (FaultED) scenario editor February 2015 Page 47
NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 The status of each of the modelling stages will be shown as one of: Never-Done: the modelling stage has yet to be undertaken. Up-To-Date: the modelling stage has been done and is up-to-date with respect to the setting of its control parameters, input dependencies and any prior modelling stage. Out-Of-Date: the modelling stage has been done but is out of date with respect to the setting of its control parameters, input dependencies and any prior modelling stage. The ability to lock a scenario is only available once the panelling and elastic modelling stages have been completed. When the Fracture Prediction scenario is loaded and activated in the Volume Editor the lock state is indicated in the Fracture Prediction toolbar's modelling buttons. If the scenario is locked, the fault panelling and elastic modelling toolbar buttons will be insensitive and augmented with a small lock icon as shown below. Fracture Prediction toolbar icons in the Volume Editor Page 48 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Simplified Point-to-Point Arbitrary Line Creation A new and simplified way of creating point-to-point arbitrary lines has been added to T7. This new option, available in both the MB3 pop-up menu and shortcut toolbar, operates on a 3-D survey selection (via a pop-up list, if more than one 3-D survey is available). Once selected, the user is able to digitise the path of the required arbitrary line on any visible objects. Having confirmed the completed set of points by clicking the right mouse button, the arbitrary line is created and loaded into the viewer. The surveys available for arbitrary line creation must be loaded in the Surveys & Grids module. February 2015 Page 49
New Fault Surface Attributes NEW FEATURES Version 7.0 Two additional attributes have been added to the list that are available for computation and display on fault surfaces. These attributes are: "Longitudinal strain" and "Shear strain". The default T7 project templates include new display methods for the display of these attributes. Longitudinal strain is defined as the dip separation gradient in the dip direction while the shear strain is the gradient in the strike direction. If realistic limits can be placed on the strain values then these attributes can be used to distinguish between good and bad fault interpretation that is entirely quantitative and objective. New fault attributes selected in Project Parameters Longitudinal strain displayed on a fault surface Page 50 February 2015
Version 7.0 NEW FEATURES Fault Statistics for Fracture Networks The Fault Statistics Tool has been extended to cater for the input of fracture network data. In particular, the fault orientation plotting system has been enhanced, providing an option to load fracture networks or entire fault surfaces into the "Orientation Plot". In order to facilitate the new input type, the data selection interface has been divided into two tabs. The first tab, "Polygon Analysis" contains the original input options whereby the user selects horizons and faults to define the intersection polygons to be analysed. The second tab, "Fracture Analysis" contains the new options to select fracture networks or fault surfaces as input data. The Fracture Analysis tab is only available for the "Orientation Plot" mode. When a fracture network is added to the plot, each contained discreet fracture used to formulate the input data. When a fault surface is added to the plot, each triangle making up the surface is used to formulate the input data. February 2015 Page 51
