5 ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to perform the comparison analysis in quality inspection system between checking fixture and Faro Arm Laser Scanner. This project is carried out to study the application of the Faro Arm Laser Scanner as a quality inspection tool for press part components. This project report include seven chapter and in chapter 1 start with introduction, background, objective, scope of the project and also finding problem that are always occurs in the press part industries during quality inspection process. Literature review becomes a guideline with study previous researches or other information s that relate to the project title. Methodology more describes the process planning with flow chart and how the project will execute. In chapter, 4 showed the explanation with figure during the project implementation. All the result and analysis with the data and graph will be show in chapter 5. There few reason and factors are stated in the chapter 6 to discuss the result and the analysis that has been gained during the experiment project. At the end of task, the conclusion are made to compared between the checking fixture and Faro Arm Laser Scanner equipment and also several recommendations have been suggested to make an improvement about the result and the project for future study. i

6 ABSTRAK Projek ini bertujuan untuk membuat perbandingan sistem pemeriksaan kualiti produk antara pemeriksaan produk secara manual dan peralatan pengimbas 3D. Matlamat projek ini adalah untuk mempelajari pelaksanaan keupayaan peralatan pengimbas 3D sebagai alat pemeriksaan kualiti produk bagi produk hasil kerja tekan. Laporan projek ini meliputi tujuh bab dan dalam bab 1 bermula dengan pengenalan, latar belakang, objektif, skop projek dan juga mengenalpasti masalah yang sering berlaku dalam industri kerja tekan semasa proses pemeriksaan kualiti. Kajian literatur menjadi penunjuk ajar dengan kajian penyelidikan sebelum ini dan juga maklumat-maklumat lain yang berkaitan dengan tajuk projek. Metodologi menggambarkan proses perancangan dengan penggunaan carta alir dan bagaimana projek akan dilaksanakan. Dalam bab 4, akan dijelaskan proses-proses yang terlibat dalam pelaksanaan projek ini. Semua keputusan dan analisis akan ditunjukkan melalui graf dan data yang dipaparkan dalam bab 5. Ada beberapa sebab dan faktor-faktor yang dinyatakan dalam bab 6 untuk membincangkan keputusan dan analisis yang telah diperoleh selama projek dilaksanakan. Pada penghujung projek, kesimpulan dapat dibuat untuk membandingkan antara pemeriksaan produk secara manual dan peralatan pengimbas 3D dan beberapa cadangan juga telah dibuat untuk meningkatkan keputusan dan projek untuk kajian di masa hadapan. ii

18 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background The studies on "Comparison Study of Press Part Quality Inspection System: Checking Fixture and Faro Arm Laser Scanner " which is an experimental based research. This study was proposed to be carried out due to the existing of checking fixture and Faro arm laser scanner. The most frequent usage of this application is in automotive, electronic, metal fabrication, plastics and press industries. Based on the research title, quality investigation was carried out to collect and record related quality checking results of Faro arm laser scanner equipment In this project study will be using press part component such as a caster that are produce in press part industries. The experimental results in this project are among the data that recorded in the reference. A press is a process of changing a shape of sheet metal using a force according to the shape of dies which this process is widely used in industrial practice. Mostly, all product manufactured are necessary an inspection process in order to conform the quality of the product. Many kind of inspection method are using such as visual inspection and through a conformance gauge. At manufacturing practice, a quality conformation on the part manufactured using press method is inspected through a special tool called checking fixture. This tool is designed and fabricated for locating, holding and then checking a certain points on part. Most checking or inspection process is made manually and the common product that inspected through this technique is a part produced by a stamping machine. An advance 1

19 manufacturing industries are using power generated checking fixture which is combine with pneumatic devices and controlled through a program generated via MATLAB or visual basic program. It is usually to inspect the attribute data of product such as light brightness and sound. For example is a manufacturer of digital cameras. Nowadays, there are many research and experimental work that have been done in the quality inspection field but the most effective parameter still cannot define. Consequently, in this project study will analysis and doing experiment investigate of the application Faro Arm Laser Scanner in quality inspection field whether it is suitable to use in press part industries or not. 1.2 Problem Statement Although many knew about the capability of a products are manufactured through a press machine. The problems that always occur are in quality inspection system where checking process of the product is needed in order to meet the specification and dimension that are required. Therefore, the application of Faro Arm Laser Scanner and checking fixture need to be identified in term of the problem in real time and capability limitation for both equipment, so that in the future the information from the experimental work can be further extended or to be used for analysis to validate the result. 1.3 Objective of the Project Objectives are very important as guidelines to the aims of the project purpose. It based on the problem statement that occurs to the find the better solution of the problems. The objectives of this project study will be: i. To perform the comparison analysis in quality inspection system between checking fixture and Faro Arm Laser Scanner. 2

To study the application of the Faro Arm Laser Scanner as a quality inspection tool for press part components. 1.4 Scope and Key Assumptions Few scopes and guidelines are listed to ensure the project is conducted within its intended boundary. This is to ensure the project is heading to the right direction to achieve its intended objectives. The first scope of this project is to find out the various researches that related with project study. All the information and data collected will be approach in this project report. Secondly, the scope of this project is to do experiment process by using Faro Arm Laser Scanner and checking fixtures equipment. In this experiment process, need to know how to use and apply both of equipment in quality inspection system. Another scope for this project is to study and analyze scan measurement data, real time capabilities and the performances of Faro Arm Laser Scanner. Test or experiment is done to analyze the accuracy of the laser scanner where method of scanning, complexity of component and scanning condition are being verified. GEOMAGIC STUDIO and GEOMAGIC QUALIFY are used in manipulating and analyzed the digitized point. 3

23 1.6 Summary This chapter indicates the application of quality inspection system in press part industries. The projects are to study the comparison between checking fixture and Faro Arm Laser Scanner as a quality inspection tool. The scopes of the project are to study and analyze scan measurement data, real time capabilities and the performances of Faro Arm Laser Scanner. The problem statement and significant the problem are stated in this chapter to elaborate the reason why do this research and the purpose of the projects. 6

24 CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Introduction This chapter will be describing about the most important elements that generated idea of the latest technology or method use that is already occurs before. This chapter also describes the researches that have been done by others in Faro Arm Laser Scanner and checking fixture. The methods of test, collecting data and assessment of Faro Arm Laser Scanner and checking fixture that had been used by others also will be described in this chapter. It is also summarized the equipments and techniques which will be used to measure the quality conformation on the part manufactured using press method. Faro Arm Laser Scanner can be studied and analyzed in this project by taking some of the example and guidance from other research. When someone has already completed do the research about Faro Arm Laser Scanner technology that is very useful for the future work, once the result of the research need to be upgrades, so literature review is the medium that can be able to get best information of recent technology or method use for this Faro Arm Laser Scanner research. 2.2 Introduction of 3D Scanner This section will be describes the generally about the 3D scanner. This information is taken from the several sources such as from the article and previous research. 7
